I want an elantra 2001-2006

Hi all. I live in Québec in Canada and since my old dodge colt is falling apart I plan on buying an elantra 2001-2006. I'm 21 and tight on budget and I think those car are pretty good for the price asked. Since you guys know these car a lot better than me what should I check when buying one used (common problems, rust, milleage ..) ? At how many miles the timming belt has to be done on those car ? And since I'm a mitsubishi enthousiast I was wondering if the beta 2 engine could have a little bit of mitsubishi in it ? because a lot of old hyundai have been powered by mitsubishi engines.

My plan for the car would be to keep it clean and reliable. Just an intake, suspension mods, rims and good brakes.

Oh and last I would like to know if you are pleased with the power of the beta 2 engine that is from what I read, more powerfull than civics, corollas and proteges.

I've owned a few Japanese cars, as well as a few Hyundai products. I think most of them are close to Japanese quality but at a much better price.
They are slightly more prone to rust , so finding an oil sprayed car is helpful.
The 2.0 is peppy and decent on fuel . I prefer used cars that have service records, and buying private also safer.
