Term:
RICE

Synonyms:
R.I.C.E.
Ricer
Riceboy
Ricegirl
Rice burner
any other word which contains the term RICE

Acronym:
Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements

Definition:
Any modification to a car which does not improve the performance of the vehicle, but merely changes the appearance so that the vehicle looks like it is faster than stock.

Examples:
http://addmorehp.com
http://www.anti-rice.com/
Putting a V-Tec sticker onto your Hyundai...shame on you...:stupid:

Reason for my post:
I think RICE has become synonymous with any modification to a car that is 'not cool' by someone's standards. WRONG.
I am getting pretty tired of hearing 'RICE!' about modifications that are not intended to be performance enhancements.

Lesson to learn:
Do not use RICE unless it is appropriate!

How to tell what kind of Rice it is?:
If the rice is the kind that can be eaten...it is safe.
If the RICE is the kind that goes onto your car...remember this post, back away from the modification, and just say no to RICE!

Ya some of mine could be considered RICE (even tho i know it was not put on to increase performance) just to make it KDM goodness :D

I still consider LED-lighted windshield washer nozzles as RICE, even though they're not a simulated perfornance enhancement...

There is no "official" definition of "Rice" in this context (at least not in the Mirriam-Webster dictionary -- http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Rice). Even if there was a definition in one or more dictionaries, that doesn't mean that the words can be used in a different manner than they are defined.

People may use the word how and when they please...

rice is definitely a slang term. Made up by muscle heads/tuners to poke fun at all the crap people have done to their cars.

I do have some rice. Fried Rice is my favorite, lol.

aluminum wings on honda accords w/ clear tails and dragon vinyl is the definition of rice, or if you have an APC banner on your windshield, or a dodge avenger with a Mugen decal on it....all of which I have seen at car shows.

RICE is any usless modification that serves no positive performance purpose and is only there to try and impress the other RICERS.

How is it being used wrong? If the modification is "cool" I would say its rice.

Lol what a great thread. From now on RICE will be used only to describe those usless modification that serves no positive performance purpose and is only there to try and impress the other RICERS (thank you RotaMan), and all other mods that people have issues with will be called GAY!

For me, "Rice" started back in the day when me and all my friends drove V8 Camaros, Firebirds/Trans-Ams, Mustangs and other RWD V8s - like my '83 Grand Prix. If a car was Japanese, it was a "rice burner." Because of the assumed prevalence of rice in Japan, the car ran on rice not gas, harhar.

A car was especially noticed and labeled so when someone put loud obnoxious exhaust on it, painted their early-90s CRX lime-green, purple or another stupid color - without painting the door jambs. Over time, Rice-burner was simply shortened to Rice. Since those days, nicely modified foreign cars have appeared, thus saving the title of rice for the stupidly modified "poser" cars, pretending to be nice.

well mayollo's turbo and suspension and other mods seperate his car from rice....Now if you take it all away and leave his car orange but everything else stock and just have the bodykit on in primer, then you've got a problem

Something else just occurred to me... who appointed KK4real the official definer of terms used on this forum or by the people on it?

Hunelan2 has it right -- the first time I heard "rice burner" was back in the late 70's or early 80's in reference to Japanese cars. Since they all had tiny engines and almost no horsepower, and since you couldn't get any performance parts for them like you could with an American V6 or V8, any modifications you could do to them were strictly appearance and "rice".

I am elated that this is a country that allows free speech.
I am glad that this forum is not like some others where you get banned for disagreeing with a particular admin...(RED ZMAN at rdtiburon)

And I am happy that everyone here speaks their mind about topics (even though sometimes we go way off topic)

No, I am not the self-proclaimed official definer of words here...
rice burners (I am not old enough to know about the 1980's term...)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rice_burner

-> I wrote this topic because I was just pissed off at some of my buddy's friends for talking RICE trash about someone's car, when they had no idea WTF they were talking about...

We were in the Walmart parking lot (where else would we be?) and we saw this brown/green Tibby parked in China .
After a good look, they were saying that this brown/green Tibby was RICE since it was an UGLY, make-you-want-to-barf brown/green color, the gauges inside the car were FAKE since the gauges were different colors (one black, one dark blue, and one white), and they kept saying that modding a Hyundai is not worth while<- burns me up!:bang:

When I pointed out the intercooler in the lower grill, they said it was probably fake...

UGLY one color exterior paint is not RICE...that's just bad taste or being color blind...modding a Hyundai is not worth while...I could say the same about plenty of other Japanese cars...

I guess what I am trying to say is I do not like my friend Taka's friends...they are Japanese and only like cars from Japan...
It was hard to argue with a few of them because some of them have really nice tuned cars (I'll take some pics of that one guy's Supra if I ever get over being irritated with him)

I just wish someone I knew who lived around me had a beefy Hyundai that could sprint past his Supra...

Japanese cars can be "riced out" too... Tell your friend with the Supra that.

There is a point with any cheap car, be it a Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, Scion, etc. where you put more money into a car than it was originally worth. However, if you can only afford an inexpensive car like our Hyundais and can squeeze out a bit more performance out of them for not much $, then that's actually cool. If the gauges and intercooler on the ugly tib work, then it's pretty neat.

I agree that just because a car is ugly it's not "rice".

kk4real, I agree with your definition of rice. That's pretty much spot-on to how I see it.

Now for some stereotypical circular definitions:

Rice -- The Asian bling.
Bling -- The black man's rice.

Just kidding. Those don't quite hold true when you see a white guy driving a riced out car with a gigantic wing.

Sorry dude. I dig the kit but i dont dig the neons esp in green.
I too often see neons in conjunction with the stupid ricers. Like this basic Jetta (wasn't a TDI or GLI) with nothing else but green neons and a the car was red. I wanted to laugh at em

Heh, both my old Elantra and my current Buick could eat the true ricers for dinner any day. And get whipped by the guys who have $3k into their engine.
