Its about time for me to have my car inspected. I have brought new tires (damn those Michalins are expensive !!) but I also need to replace my windsheild. Does anyone know what this should cost me? Any tips? Know any good installers in the DC area? Gimmie whatever ya got.

There are plenty of places in the Nova-DC area, just pick up the phone book at and start calling. I've never had to do it, but I think if you could buy the glass, you could probably do it yourself with a friend.

Why do you need to replace your windsheild? Are there cracks in it? From my understanding, you should be able to get it replaced free, if your car has any insurance on it at all. My 89 Dodge Colt had next to nothing for insurance, and when the windshield cracked (I was blasting the heat on the windsheild during a snow storm), they replaced the whole thing free.

check to see if you have no-deductibe glass coverage on your insurance. many ins. companies won't charge you to replace (or repair, if repairable) your windshield.
if not, shop around. seriously, prices fluctuate WILDLY in the replacement glass business. expect quotes between $175 and $450. i also have not really noticed a correlation between cost and quality. try and go with a place that has a good reputation, and make sure they gaurantee it against leaks for life.
even if you have a deducable check around, we have a few around these parts that will replace the glass and charge the insur company and not collect the deductable.

i paid a little over $300 around pittsburgh. waved deductable applies only to repairs like chips and not replacements at least with my ins. co. the only way i can score a free windshield if it's stress or temp fracture not rocks or other things. i.e. poor quality/wormanship not damage

I am replaceing my widsheild because I have a 8 in crack caused by a stone. I will check to see if I have no deductable glass coverageand go that route if I do. I was hopeing to get a recomendation from omeone who has had this done locally; scanning the phone book for repairs is a good way to get got.
Thanks all

Got mine replaced last spring, cost: $200 CND. It's a used windshield but surprisingly clean and no dent or chip. If you know where to look, the big part of the money goes to the windshield itself. Dont let anyone rip you off with "expert installation" all in all, replacing a windshiled is a 20 min job.

just because it's a 20-minute job doesn't mean they can't seriously mess up the installation. professionalism applies here just as it does to more complicated repairs. the biggest worry is that the replacement will LEAK. this happens all the time, because too many glass installers don't remove/clean the original adhesive properly and/or don't apply the new adhesive properly. plus some of these hacks break the plastic clips that hold the molding/trim pieces in place and then they don't snap back in place properly. oh, and sometimes they end up scratching the paint!!! as i said above, make CERTAIN they back up the installation with a lifetime warranty!!! this kind of crap HAS happened to me...
