Boss just walked in. Asked if I'm available Thursday morning. Said he and the administrator (my boss' boss) want to meet with me on Thursday morning at 9am to "discuss my job description."
He then said, don't worry, it's good -it's nothing bad- but it might be weird. He said "he knows why he approached the administrator about it," but is unsure what the administrator's "angle" will be.
What the hell does that mean???? It might be weird? I've never heard that phrase before a meeting, less a personnel meeting regarding me?
The first thing that came to mind was something about the supervisory roll I'll have over interns this summer. Other than that I'm stumped.

Well I would think if they were letting you go, you would be gone. Most companies won't let an employee just hang around. Sounds like they are going to add some responsibilities to your title, just hope you are not going to be cleaning the restrooms on your breaks.
I think you will be all right.

Haha, restroom.......................duties............. ......:D;) Just trying to ease the tension a bit.
Yeah, sounds to me like something good is headed your way and there's nothing to worry about.

i agree, it sounds like something good is coming. Usually when they want to meet with you, and blatantly say its not bad, don't worry, its alright not to worry. unless they are total slimeballs. I would say they are going to ask u if you will take on more responsibility as they want u to move up within the comany. Might come with perks, might not, but in the long run it should be good. let us know what happens

well show up to work with a ski mask and a reel of ethernet cable and let them know you don't want to hear any bad news and you don't want to see any heroes.

yeah, it's probably not bad or this would have been a different "my job" thread. although I'd bring an ample supply of vaseline, just in case it doesn't go well :D

I'm sure it'll be good Mike. Maybe the "administrator" just needs to know exactly what you do, since most job titles are total crap. The county where I work is going through a "job class" survey right now where there are asking all employees to read thier job description, duties, qualifications, etc and comment on them. Maybe that is the kind of thing they are doing there.
hyunelan2
03-04-2008, 11:25 PM
Yeah, we went through one of those job classification things like 2 years ago, and my title changed.
I think it's one of 2 things. The either want to add the supervisory of interns duties to my job description. Or, they want to switch me from hourly to salary. If they do that, I won't take it without a raise, since overtime (rare as it is) goes away.

That and usually when they switch you from hourly to salary, they expect you to work the OT since they aren't paying.

Ain't it the truth. I seem to be picking up more hours lately and get nothing extra to show for it.:(

That and usually when they switch you from hourly to salary, they expect you to work the OT since they aren't paying.
I've noticed some companies do this more than others. They can't make me work overtime though. Every once in awhile I'll stay late under special circumstances. But generally speaking, after I've worked my 8 hours for the day, I'm outta here.
Yeah, maybe the higher-ups are trying to gain a better understanding of everyone's job function. Perhaps they want to make sure nobody is buried with work, or has too much free time. Or... perhaps they want to give you a promotion. In any case, if they say it's nothing bad, then that's good.

Salary actually wouldn't be too terrible for me. There have been times where it would be easier for me to do my job (like a Server upgrade) on a Saturday morning or something, but need to have overtime approved to do it. This results in me doing it during the work week and users experiencing downtime because of it.
Basically, if I were salary I know I'd work more, but it would make life easier. Since I know I'll work more, I expect to get paid more to do so.
But, I'm not even sure that's what this is about. It's probably got more to do with my defined duties or title. The meeting invitation that arrived this morning via outlook simply said "Job Description Review."
I think you should sweat it as much as possible and let it eat at your insides until Thursday.
ive been in similar situations, just try and keep yourself busy and not over analyze things.

So, I had my meeting with my boss and my boss’ boss –the Village Administrator, the highest non-elected position in the city. In brief, they want me to re-write my job description. Why, you ask?
May 1, everyone gets a Cost of Living Adjustment [COLA] of 4%. However, they want to give me more money. Me and only me. The highest they could get the Village Board to agree to is another 3%, for a total of 7%. So, since they had a bigger number in mind (of course they won’t tell me what it is), they want to re-write my job description to a higher level, so I can be “re-slotted” at a higher salary range. I will also get my up-to-4% merit raise in October.
LOL.
I will still remain paid hourly for now (nice, I didn’t want to be salary). If I did convert to salary, the Administrator agreed the number would have to go way up – he used $20K as an example.
LOL.
Additionally, and this is the part that I almost laughed out loud at, they want to at some point give me an assistant. Not a full-time assistant, but maybe find someone that can take over the lower-level duties of my job when I am busy. The lacking part is someone whom we (me and my 2 bosses) believe is competent enough to do the job and available enough to do it. Basically dumb people have time, smart people are too busy. Dumb people = cannot be trusted to do my job. At current time, due to the slowdown in the economy, we are not hiring additional staff. They are willing to align someone elses position to help me out [and provide me with more time to play on the interwebz].
LOL.
So, what I am to now do is list the things I am doing, that are in addition to what my job description says. I am to possibly get IT manager positions from other cities, look at their job descriptions, and salary ranges, and rewrite my own job. The funny thing is I have 3 friends that work for technical staffing firms (like Aerotek) and will help me out tremendously.
What fun this will be. Oh, and what car should I buy, lol

Very nice. Big raises are always welcome. I was hit with several big raises during the past few years, and it sure is a different experience from when I used to make $8/hr while the company I worked for charged $100/hr for my services. That's a 1250% mark-up. I still don't know how I let them get away with that, haha.

and you were sweating it all for what...congrats, and enjoy the money.
Do you like the elantra still though? If you do, you should look at getting some real estate while the market is a little lower. Either that, or look at doing something else with it. You are always so level headed on here, it would be sad if you took all of that and just blew it on a new car (not to say that I wouldn't do that, but I would like to think that I would be able to control myself if I all of a sudden came into more money.)

The Elantra is getring close to due. I won't replace it until the SF is paid off (soon). It's still driving just fine, but definately showing its age. We'll see, I want something bigger.
I'd love to buy some more house... but I'm upside down in my current house because the housing market fell apart. Can't sell, unless at a loss, which will just swallow up cash to finish paying it off. I know, I looked into it about a month ago. Can't swing 2 mortgages, can't sell it (even at a loss - there's so many in my neighborhood not selling), it's a soft market with no renters = stuck.
I'll probably just keep socking it away in the savings account. I don't see any of it until the new fiscal year anyway (May 1st).

Yeah if he were to fire you he could have done it himself, no need for his boss to come in. And him telling you it is nothing bad really means it is nothing bad. There is no need for him to lie. And its always weird to be picked at and probed by your superiors anyways. Hell I have never talked to my boss' boss and if they ganged up on me one, good or bad, I'd get nervous.

Well done Mike.
You should buy a Ferrari. Convertible so that you don't have to worry about hitting your head. That sounds pretty practical for Chicago. Hah.
hyunelan2
03-06-2008, 06:58 PM
Ha. It would be perfect weather for a Ferrari Convertible here... from about June 25 to July 3. Before that it's cold and raining. After that it would be too hot, too humid and you'd want the A/C.

dude that's sweet! you should include "Moderation Of External Site, requires 60-80% of my time, but would cause severe distress to all departments if not handled" ie. if you can't f-around goin on exd for a mind break, you're gonna end up going postal on a clock tower somewhere. that should be worth an extra 6-8 grand a year, don't you agree?
