So after months of wishing and contemplating, I finally signed my soul over to the dept devil and bought my first big box! It's a 2 bay Matco 6225RX, color is Silver Vein with bright chrome trim and a stainless steel top. It also has some neat texture to the metal other than the standard smoothe flat metal found on most other boxes. $8000 later, this is what I have.

I had to give it to the Matco guy. He gave me a grand for it, even though I only paid about $650. I doubt you'd want it anyway. It nice and fairly new, but was just a single bay Craftsman stackable. It was nice though. It was the deepest ones they carry and had ball bearing drawers and grip latch handles. This is what I had:

They are nice quality boxes. But I had **** piled on top of **** in mine as well as my tool cart. So I had to even stop buying tools because there was just no more room. I bought a bigger tool car in December and that took some of the slack from my box, but it still wasn't cuttin it! This one, but in blue:

yeah, and think about how nice of a car/house/family/stress-free-life he would have if he just had to borrow a random obscure tool from a co-worker.

we have a guy that has every tool imaginable, but he buys it all from harbor freight, so he isnt in any debt.

No, it's actually not that bad! The payment is a mere $38 per week (but I'll do a minumum of $40), which is much easier than paying a monthly lump sum of $160. This is very easy for me to handle. At one point, I had a $50 per week tool bill between the Mac and Snap-on trucks. Anyway, at this rate, it will take a maximum of 4 years to pay off the box since the interest is a fixed charge and already included into the price of the box. So the interest will never increase from only paying the minumum, but will decrease if I pay it off earlier, which I plan to do.

See, what I did instead of buying a 3/8's gun was bought the Mac mini 1/2" gun. It is VERY light an only slightly bigger than a 3/8's gun, so it fits in just about any place a 3/8's would and weighs about the same and is VERY quiet. I only payed $180 with the trade of my craftsman gun. Normal price is about $260 and it's 700ft lbs. Also, there is no need to buy new impact sockets!

You work for Benz or something similar? I hear the Ray Catena Benz dealership near me requires techs to use their boxes to keep up with the shops blue decor. Nothing like a nice free Snap-on box. Needless to say I won't be applying there anytime soon.:D

The BMW dealership I used to work at had plans to move the service department to a new building off site. That was over 4 years ago and I think they still haven't moved yet. I miss those kinds of lifts though, so comfortable.

Why did you chose independent over BMW?

Why did you chose independent over BMW?

I wasn't a tech at BMW. I worked there before I even knew how to work on cars. I started as a detailer, then moved to the service department as the quality control tech for service vehicles. I left to go to automotive school. While working there, I moved an hour away and the commute sucked so I decided no to go back.

Congrats on the new box.

When the tools you buy pay your bills, it is definately worth having that extra comfort in knowing that it is all stored, in it's place, under lock and key, and knowing that you have the only key.

On a side note:

I remember a few years ago when I bought my Snap-On roll cab and top box. My wife was a little irritated. Then I had it paid off in under a year she was a little ticked off. Now it sits in my garage at home full of Snap-On and Mac tools that are rarely used anymore, and with that she is surely breathing fire. Now my accounts on both trucks are going up again (Buahahahaa) for stuff that I need at work and now she is ready to fry my arse. I told her the other day that at the end of the year if my bid at work changes I may be have to bring all of the new stuff home also that will require a side locker.

I'm with Evan 110%. There's no way I would throw down 8K for a metal box with a lock.

Yeah, most likely. Seeing the price tag on that thing makes me glad I don't do it for a living.

I could understand the 8K if it was full with tools..but seriously? 8K for an empty metal box with drawers and a lock? No way.

i'd pay 8K if the tool box came with that KDM kid that is in my other post. but only if he was a certified tech.

Guage of the metal, quality of the materials, and the brand name...

DJ Hellfire
03-06-2008, 11:18 PM
Stainless steel top, upgraded spring wheels, top of the line series of Matco boxes, and about $2300 in interest! The actual cost of the box was about $6500 minus $1000 for my trade. Then there is tax!

its till not a bad buy....

its more then a box with a lock...those are double ball bearing drawers with double sliders (nice and smooth to open and close especially if you have 20 or so pounds in it.) i have also seen demonstrations where they have four of those boxes and a dumb truck is put on top of it....guess what they hold the weight easily

all i really have are the basics...and i'm down 2500 bucks.

DJ Hellfire
03-07-2008, 07:49 AM
This box also has these new things on the tracks that allow you to adjust how easy or hard it is to open the drawers. I think the paint job costed extra too.

Anyone ever try the Metrench tools? The ones where one tool works on both standard and metric applications?

I have a set, and they kick a$$....one size fits both metric and standard. Because of the way they grab bolts and nuts, the bolt or nut can be totally rounded, yet they grab, because they grab on the flat sides, not the corners. It saves you money because you only have to buy one set of tools.
