View Full Version : Windshield wiper fluid sputtering out

I've searched around on the forums and haven't really found anyone else with a similar situation.

For some reason or another the washer fluid wasn't coming out of the front or back nozzles. I then used a pin to try to clear the front nozzles, and now it only sputters. I can hear the motor running, and since I am getting some fluid out of the nozzle, I think that the motor is still good (not sure).

Could this be a possible clog along the lines somehow, or could it be the nozzle on the hood thats just really messed up?

most likely a clog.
do this. open ur hood, TAKE OFF the spray nozzle, and try spraying the fluid again, to check if the rubber lines r clear. if it sprays out of the rubber hose, front and back, then u just have some dirty nozzle, clean them or buy some new ones, w.e

if the fluid still sputters even with the nozzle off, then u may have an inline clog, or the pump is beginning to go bad.

but its more than likely a clogged nozzle, so take it off n try again, n get it cleaned.

Sounds to me like your hoses are clogged. Try clearing them out before replacing the nozzles.

If your hoses are clear and you need new nozzles, I recommend these (http://www.kdmstuff.com/shop/step1.php?number=415).

I had a similar problem and it took me a while to figure out what exacly was wrong. In my situation I had been in an accident and the right fender and hood had been replaced. The nozzles started sputtering and it turned out the line was being pinched by the hood because it was routed incorrectly. So open your hood and try to spray it with the hood open see what happens.

I recently had the same issue with my '07 Elantra. When I took it in for an oil change I asked about it. They blew out the lines and told me to add a little water to the w/w fluid to dilute the solution, and that it should be fine. I haven't had a problem since.

So in short, your lines are probably clogged and need to be cleaned out. Hope this helps.

The XD has dual nozzles, the XD2 has the 3-way.

I've used an air compressor to blow out the lines on other cars. It will also help you find a leak too. Just hold the line out of the pump to the nozzle of the air line and squeeze the trigger. You'll know quick enough where the problem lies or you will clean out the wiper fluid nozzles.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all the responses. A lot of them were filled with some ideas I'd never even thought of, like using an air compressor, replacing the hoses, or trying to spray with different parts of the hose disconnected.

Well today I tried disconnecting the hoses and checking to see if I can get any water. The problem is I cannot even get to the hose because its behind the fender. I can see the hose when I squeeze under the car, but I'll need a jack to be able to move around under there. I don't trust the tire changing jack. So I'll have to figure something out. Any suggestions?

Also, looks like I may need to re-route the lines so I can get to them easier next time.

Take the passenger headlight out to get to everything easier, as well as the inner fender well.

u can disconnect the hoses on the under neath of your hood. and then check if its even getting any pressure that far up, basically, work ur way towards the pump, starting as close to the nozzles as u can.

Its always the nozzles that get clogged with too much washer fluid solution, just get a staple and poke the nozzles in and out on each hole until the water sprays out normal.
I done this many times on multiple cars, works everytime.
