Hello all,
Am glad I found this site!
I have an 04 Elantra GT sedan. Bought it used from a dealer at 60K miles in Jan 07 for $6250, and it now has 93K miles. After buying, I had Kumho tires put on it, changed the timing belt and other belts. It's run perfect since then with no problems except the shimmy above 70 MPH. I do oil changes every 6000 miles and rotate the tires. I recently changed the tranny fluid myself, and put in a K&N air filter at 70K miles. The shimmy refuses to go away even after 2 tire balancings. I guess a Hunter balancing and rotation is required to see if the problem goes away?
I am due for new brake pads since the bite is definitely less these days.
Can someone please guide me to a local mechanic in central NJ? I am in Middlesex county in South Brunswick area. I just don't trust the chain shops to do a correct diagnosis or work on the car. I have been misguided by them enough in the past even though I am aware of the basics of car maintenance. The last time I went in for a belt sqeak to Pepboys, I was told it was a defective bearing in the power steering and a $300 job even though I specifically told them the alternator belt was loose. Only after insisting did I walk out with my car intact and a $10 bill for tightening the belt. But they cracked the engine cover in the process.
Anyone on this forum who can give the car a nice look over? I'd rather pay someone local a hundred bucks instead of shelling the money to a Pepboys or dealership.
Thanks a ton!
