I have a stock 2001 Elantra and just paid $214 to replace the input speed sensor (with labour) at my local dealer. I saved $90 getting the codes read at Autozone, The car has 67k on it and I am looking at doing more items myself. at 67k what should i be looking at that I can do myself (basic stuff)?.

I also have a rear fender with a large dent in the corner, I cannot find a way to remove the fender to push the dent out, can anyone help?

in the DIY section you'll have maintenance and mods things you can do, from basic to "expert"

http://www.elantraxd.com/DIY/index.html

in the basic things you have (obviously)

- oil change
- air filter change
- fuel filter change
- spark plug and wire change
- etc ...

ok thank you i see it now... one of my other questions has anyone got a photo or diagram of the location of the input and output speed sensors?.. from reading they seem to be very easy to change but i cannot find a "how to" or image so i would know what im looking at!, wondering if i could have saved the $95 Labour fee

the rear fender as far as i kno does not actually come off, i think its part of the frame. u can try to take apart the plastics in ur trunk n bang it out from the inside if u can reach... or get those weird hammer thing where u put a hole in the metal, and bang the hammer type thing away from it, n its supose to pull it out, idk wat its called, but im sure someone knows wat i mean.

"Rear Fender" is actually the quarter panel. It's welded to the unibody of the car. Not goingto come off. . . well it will, but it'll require quite a fair bit of cutting. Hope your'e good with a welder.

As for "saving $90" getting the codes read, 99% of the dealerships will wave the diag fee if you have the work completed there. So you really didn't save anything there, and if you just had them replace what the code said, may cost yourself more in the long run.

Things due at 60k: oil, trans fluid, air filter, timing belt/water pump, accessory belts. What I would suggest you do on your own, oil, filter and air filter.

ok thanks for that advice, the code that popped up was the only one on the display, and according to the work sheet, they looked anyway with their machine and cleared it. IM due an oil change in a few weeks so i guess theres no time like the present!

Ouch...it takes like 10-15 min to change the input speed sensor. Its right on the top of the transmission. One 10mm bolt, and it comes out. The part itself is aroun $80 i think. I replaced mine.

Output speed sensor is located on the top of the transmission. On the side closest to the firewall, IIRC.

With the rear dent, you can either weld a stud to the fender and use a stud hammer to pull it out. Or drill a hole in the center and a simular hammer will grab the hole and pull the dent out.

I prefer the stud welder thats what I use.

The only cars I know of that you can just remove or unbolt the quarter panel without drilling the spot welds are a few models of Saturns. Since everything on a lot of em are all plastic except for the hood, roof, and trunk. Depending on the size of the dent unispotters (the thing pictured above) are probably the best way to go but you do have to grind to bare metal on the spot(s) that you use it or the stud will not connect with the body of your car. Once you pull the dent you have to use filler (bondo), let it dry, and sand. Unless youre a hardcore do it yourselfer I'd probably just take it to a body shop to get it fixed. It may cost more but once you buy all the crap to fix it yourself it's not going to be cheap and you will save a headache.
