Ok the title says it all. This friday I am going to do a few things on my car to have it ready for the summer. First thing first, I know it may have been on some threads but just making sure, for the tranny fluid drain and refill, there is a bolt on the bottom that I can drain the fluid from, I think there are two so which one to be exact should I take off? Then I think I need to refill it with 5 qts of spIII fluid. Im short on cash so I figured Id do this to keep it running and get a flush at 60K. The radiator drain, just removed the drain from below and drain it out, then flush it out with hose water and blast the heater from inside. Top it off with coolant/antifreeze. Does that sound fine? Also I was going to use premixed coolant/antifreeze, how much would be needed? Now the coolant bypass, I know the easy way is to just disconnect the valves and do a U-turn for them and close of the ports on the TB. I want to do something else though. I wanted to to get a 3 way ball valve that has one inlet and 2 outlets, when the switch is at one position, one outlet is open and when it is switched to the other position, the other outlet is opened and the first one closes. This would make it easier in switching it up when winter comes along. Anyone do this or know what valve I am talking about? As for the oil filter change Ive done it before so im fine with that.

no need for a valve on the TB bypass ... me and KeWLKaT live up north and never had TB problems with the bypass ;)

On the tranny there are two bolts, like you mentioned. The one that sticks straight out towards the front of the car is where you fill it. The one underneath it angled towards the ground is the drain plug.
If it's an auto, yes, you HAVE to use Hyundai SP-III fluid. I don't know the exact amount for auto trannys, but manuals are around 2.3 quarts.

i second that.
along with the 100's of other makes and models of vehicles that dont have coolant lines running through the throttle body.

radiator...no.
Transmission...if it's an automatic...YES! No matter what it smells or looks like.

I drain/refill my radiator every year. I usually recommend every other year to others to help keep the cooling system free and clear as best as possible but thats my opinion.

considering the coolant that is sold nowadays is extended life and can really last 5+ years easily. i just dont see cooling system problems anymore. i do remeber the late 90's sebring coupes had issues with coolant turning brown and eating the coolant passage pipe, but i see on a reguar basis vehicles coming through my shop with 70+ K miles and the coolant still good.

Just to make sure what is our coolant fluid capacity? I saw a vid on prestone.com about using a flushing agent with water, running the engine until it reaches operating temp then turning it off, waiting for it to cool and then draining the fluid. Then filling wit water, running it for 15 mins letting it cool and then draining it again and then finally adding the 50/50 of af/coolant and water. I just want to make sure how much will be needed at the end to not overfill the radiator. Also it gets filled from the top right where the knob is at or from the reservoir? just making sure my last car was a diff make altogether so not sure about the elantra.

what, a company that SELLS flushes promoting the very product it sells and shaking the scary stick that your car will DIE if you don't buy it? I'd never believed it.

Directions:
COOLANT: Fill it until it's full.
If you screw those up, please don't ever touch your car again.

Just fill it by the rad until its full and turn the car on to burp it... Once you burped the rad, add coolant in the tank and then check again a couple of days later.

yeah i figured is just that unlike say engine oil, which you dont want to fill until full, coolant doesnt have a measuring mechanism. ok so just to the top before it stop sover flowing got it.

but you need to make sure the car is at operating temp because coolant expands, and you need to get rid of the air bubbles.

huh?? I thought you cant put in coolant while hot, cracks the engine block?? How do you get rid of bubbles? I thought you jus pour it any forget it? How do you do it?

Start the car and pour it in while its running wait for the thermostat to open and let all the air out. Keep the heat on full while doing this it flushes the heater core and also fills it up when refilling. Ok I will have to do that. My car has 31000 so It might have already been done. Is there any way to check. BOB

^^^ Yep, like he said, except leaving the heat on full, I prefer not doing that as you get more heat staying in the system. I recently ''flushed my coolant'' (in reality there was a new engine so it was bone dry), and i used that technique with good results.

I think 6 quarts according to the DIY for auto tranny drain and refill on EXD.
Well I did the coolant and the TB coolant bypass and although I had the engine light on, I took the neg of the battery off for a while as I got ready for work and then it went away and has not come back on. Ima do the tranny drain and refill tomorrow. How does this sound? My car is at 48K miles and I dont really know how it was kept before I got it. I am short on cash so Ima do a drain and refill in the meantime then at 60K get a flush and have them install a filter for me at the dealership. I am going to do a drain and refill from then on every 30K and replace the filter every 30k as well. Does that sound good? I just think spending$60 every 3-4 years makes less of a damper on my wallet than spending $150.

I checked the site where u can get teh filters and they recommend every 30K miles or eerytime you get a flush/drain-refill .
I just did my drain refill and I think our trannies hold 15 quarts right so replacing by 5.5 quarts im using 1/2 new fluid. compared to the old fluid the newer fluid mixture is much much clearer. I might do the flush at 60K or just do another drain and refill to further dilute the old with the new and add a filter, it is much much cheaper too.
Oh and if anyone has installed the filter, how and where does it go? I know it is unidirectional so I dont want to mess up and making go against the current of the fluid.

I will drain it this time but depending on how hard the pan is to remove will probably just have AAMCO do it at 60000. BOB
