: Trunk Rattle
JuMpMaN6235 09-19-2004, 12:17 PM Did anyone actually successfully get there Trunk to stop Rattling
The only thing i have now is the dynamat trunk kit and it still rattles, and not a low sounding rattle
Also The sunroof Rattles i cant figure out where or how to stop it, the guy at circut city couldnt either...... did any1 else have this problem
(GLS w/ sunroof)
SWortham 09-19-2004, 12:44 PM For the trunk... have you checked that the torsion bars are in their clips? And does the license plate rattle?
As for the sunroof, I have no idea.
JuMpMaN6235 09-19-2004, 12:51 PM Torsion Bars where is that...... no i fixed the license plate
Torsion bars run crossways across the trunk and are up by the rear seat backs and speaker shelf. open the trunk and look up under the rear speaker shelf by the seat back. you will see the torsion bars that hold the trunk open when you raise it. There is a clip that holds the center of them in place, and if they come out of the clip they will rattle.
JuMpMaN6235 09-19-2004, 04:42 PM there on the clips
check the spare...make sure its mounted tightly....also the jack....mine was loose so i tightened it pretty darn good.
DJ Hellfire 09-19-2004, 10:31 PM Face it, the trunk is gonna rattle, especially if you have your speakers facing the trunk. If you face the speakers toward the cabin, it'll reduce the rattle, but the bass wont sound as loud inside the car which I have experimented with and am speaking from experience. The only way to stop the rattle is to completey seal the trunk off from the cabin and have the speakers facing the cabin like this, which I have not done and don't ever plan on doing:

See how you cannot reach into the trunk from the cabin even with the seats folded down? Now, with 2 giant 18's in a small 4 door Civic, the owner and installer of this car says that the trunk is 100% rattle free. You can check the full install here: http://www.sounddomain.com/memberpage/239025/1
southpawboston 09-19-2004, 10:39 PM that is sick.
JuMpMaN6235 09-20-2004, 12:25 AM i have tightened the spare and even put some dynatmat around the jack
yea i dont ever plan on going that extreme..... Does anyone know about the sunroof rattling,
and no one on these forums has successfully made there trunk stop rattling? (without doing something like the civic guy did)
southpawboston 09-20-2004, 06:14 AM you would have to dynamat just about every surface on the trunk to stop the rattles. and as for the sunroof, there's a member on EGTclub with a new 04 who had a really bad sunroof rattle problem that three dealers couldn't fix, and finally she threatened with lemon law litigation and got hyundai involved, and they ended up fixing it. they had to tear out the whole sunroof assy. turns out the glass was banging against a bent frame rail. then they didn't put the headliner back in right and the clips rattled.
SWortham 09-20-2004, 07:40 AM Well maybe the other rattles in my car are drowning it out but I don't think my trunk rattles. I didn't have to do anything special. Then again, I don't have a sub.
JuMpMaN6235 09-20-2004, 12:36 PM lol well, i didnt know it was that deep of a problem with the sunroof, i guess im stuck with it
Swortham, yea having a sub is what'll do it
kylemorg 09-20-2004, 02:13 PM My sunroof rattles, too, but on mine it's just the trim pieces on the bottom of the glass sliding portion that seem to be loose. I don't know if it's possible to tighten them, but to check them open the sunshade, then open the sunroof 1/4 of the way. Reach up and push on the black plastic trim pieces on either side of the glass that cover the sliding tracks and see if that stops the rattle.
DJ Hellfire 09-20-2004, 10:35 PM Here is a list of rattles I found and either solved or made them better.
1. My sunroof only rattles when it's open with the bass up loud, but you still can't even hear it rattling. You can see it flapping up and down really fast, but any sound that it might make, is covered by the bass. It doesn't make a peep when it's closed. The arear around the sunroof buttons used to rattle from the bass, but I shoved some stirafoam (how the hell do you spell that?) in there and haven't heard it since.
2. The rear deck also rattles because it smacks against the rear windshield. What I did was crammed a 3 inch strip of weatherstripping between where the rear decklid and rear windshield meet. I put one strip on both sides of the brake light and if fixed that. Also, it's black stripping so it's barely noticable and doesn't look too tacky.
3. Also, it's good to put the soft side of some sticky velcro under the black plastic panels behind the back seats. These panels rattle against the part of chassis that they are clipped to.
4. Also, at the very back end of the headliner where there are 3 small clips holding it to the roof is a very noisey area. From prolonged periods of bass, these clips wear out and no longer hold the back of the headliner to the ceiling. It's visibly unnoticable but mid to high frequecy bass makes it rattle like a *****. Since most of the music I listen to has a lot of low bass notes, it's not a very important issue for me. But when I get the time, I will try some soft sticky velcro in there to see if it works.
5. Both front door panels rattle right in the arear under the words written on the corners of the front windows. Dynamat fixed this for me.
6. Sometimes, the passenger seat belts is facing the front windshield which will cause the side of it to bang against the right b-pillar. You can either flip it to where it is facing the driver or just buckle it.
7. You can cut a piece of dynamat the same exact size of the rear lisence plate and place ot directly behind the lisence plate. Also, drill 2 holes in your trunk through the 2 bottom lisence plate holes and put nuts on the other end of the screw from the inside of the trunk so they stay tight. This will knock out the plate rattle.
8. The torsion bars rattle out of their holder sometimes. And even when they are put back in the holder, the holder still rattles. This may not happen on everyones car yet but it may after years of loud bass. My torsion bar holder is not completely tight in the bottom of the rear deck anymore. It is kinda loose and I can even hear it rattling over bumps sometimes. I tried to silicone it to the deck but my bass broke the bond. I will try something else later but the silicone did cushion it a bit to reduce the volume of the rattle.
9. This one is probably the most annoying noise and was hard to find. It isn't even a rattle but more of a squeak. I was getting this annoying as squeak on certain bass frequencies that I thought was coming from my left rear speaker. So I pulled out the speaker and found that it was making a similar noise to the one that was bothering me. So I bought some new rear speakers and nothing changed. So I put a song on that makes this noise come out (Ludacris - Stand Up), I started to apply pressure to things in the rear deck. When I held the 3rd brake light, the noise went away. So I removed the 3rd brake light and found that the holding arms that holds it in place where rubbing against the deck frame and causing that annoying squeak. So I wrapped the arms in 3M felt tape and reinstalled it. I haven't heard the noise ever since. This was the most important rattle for me to fix because it was the most annoying.
That's all I can think of right now.
JuMpMaN6235 09-20-2004, 11:51 PM Thanks DJ im about to print that out and go through all of them this week... DJ have you ever played 50 cent - Many Men... if so, How bad is the rattling after doing all those things
Ima try that sunroof thing out too, when its open its pretty bad and when its closed its not that bad, but u can still hear it
Elantra2.001 09-21-2004, 12:04 AM Taking out the spare and the jack got rid of most of mine, then dampening the trunk latch and the rear deck got rid of the rest. Just make the whole inside shiny with dynamat.
CTele02 09-21-2004, 02:13 AM Um with my 02 gls i have a 550watt amp to my w6 so the trunk rattled like crazy. So i used dynamat and when i put about 3-4 layers of the stuff right around the latch where the sub is hitting the hardest, it greatly reduced the rattle. And then i dynamated the entire trunk lid at least one layer. I only did it cuz from the outside it sounded horrible but now its just a way softer vibration and cranking up the volume, i dont hear much rattling over the music on the inside. Though to get rid of all the rattling that i sometimes hear ill prolly just get a 4channel amp so the highs pretty much obliterate everything, including my ear drums.

Awe man, Many Men sounds beautiful in my car. I love that song. You gotta get Lil Jon album. That **** thumps like crazy even though the lyrics suck! But all the rattles in my car are like almost gone. I barely ever hear any rattles inside the car. I can't hear my trunk rattling iside the car anymore either, but it sucked when I could. I still have to take care of the rear of the headliner.
Can you guys with the dynamatted trunk lids and latches post pics of where you placed the mat? Thanks!
CuddleBug1899 09-21-2004, 10:47 PM I don't have a problem with rattling, but of course I also don't have any subs/amps/etc... so yeah. But I do have a wind deflector on my sunroof and when I am on the highway (usually when I get up to about 90-95 mph) it starts to whistle really loud at times depending on how windy it is. I guess I could seal it around the edges to stop the noise but it doesn't happen often so I'm not too concerned. I shouldn't be goin that fast anyway lol

Many men sounds like SH*T in my car, i like the song but i have to turn my base down when i play it cuz itll sound bad.... lil jon king of krunk?
cclngthr 09-22-2004, 11:00 AM I recovered my back panel in leather and when I reinstalled it, I stuffed enough leather scraps under it to keep the thing from vibrating on the window. I also replaced the two bumper stops on the trunk with longer ones to keep that from rattling as much.
Dynamat/fatmat is installed on the interior of the whole trunk, including the trunk lid.
DJ Hellfire 09-22-2004, 09:52 PM lil jon king of krunk?
Yup! The one with "to the windooooow, to the wall...."
