Hi all,

I'm in the process of buying a 2004 GLS with 57k on it. The dealer is going to do the 60k service, but they said they will only change the water pump if they find it is leaking. They said if they find it is not leaking, I have the option of having it done anyway and paying out of pocket for it.

My question is; is it worth paying the $100-150 they quoted to have it done now? How long do the pumps in these cars usually last? Is there any chance of it lasting to 120k?

I had to borrow, beg, and steal just to afford this car, so shelling out another $150 right now isn't something I really want to do.

Thanks.

It seems to be a craps shoot with our pumps. Some have made 100k without problem and others failed early. The pump would have been covered by your powertrain warranty to 100k if you where the 1st owner. I didn't change mine when I did the belt and got lucky.

Obviously he's not going to be the first owner buying it at 57k. . .

Spend the extra $100 for the pump. There will be no additional labor as they are in there to start with. This guarantees you are safe for another 60k+.

Yeah, I guess I'm just being cheap. I only borrowed enough to pay for the car so now I have to come up with the money some other way.:(

Oh, and they said the price of the pump was something like $65 but they would charge for a half hour of labor also.

Thanks guys.

There will be additional labor. There is the time to drain and fill the cooling system, and the time to actually unbolt the pump, clean the gasket, and bolt up the new pump.

obviously I didn't read the post that well. I was gone for most of last week and going through posts a little to quick I guess. Fixed.

I had my timing belt with the 3 acc belts changed @60K, but DID NOT change the water pump. now at 72K no problems. not worried, and car sounds great!

In the 6 yrs I've worked for hyundai I have changed maybe 4 water pumps. there's just not many problems with them. I would change it at 120K but not 60K

I have 130K on mine and no leaky!

There is actually an additional partial labor charge to do the pump. Remember, you have to drain the coolant (or just let it gush when you pop the pump off), clean the old gasket off the block, put the new pump on and slap the belt on. Then you still have to fill and bleed (or sometimes flush) the coolant system. I doubt any place will do this for free just because your already there. That's easily at least an additional 30 minutes more work.

OK, I finally have the car in my possession. I was treated very kindly by the Hyundai dealership; probably due to the $8500 cash I gave them.

Here is a list of everything they did for the 60k service that was included in the selling price.....

NY state inspection: $21

Timing belt
Parts: $142.38
Labor: $217.50

Air filter:
Parts: $15.95

Torque suspension bolts
Labor: $10

Test for stored diagnostic codes
Labor: $19.99

Ultimate engine performance service
Labor: $65.00
Parts: $28.90

Cooling system service
Parts: $34.06
Labor: $61.54

Automatize trans flush and complete fluid replacement
Parts: $61.03
labor: $65.00

Tune up, 4 cylinder
Parts: $55.80
Labor: $53.97

Replace passenger compartment air filter
Part: $34.95
Labor: $25.00

Replace front rotors
Parts: $159.98
Labor: $91.95

Clean and lube caliper slides
Labor: $79.99

Oil change
Parts: $17.16
Labor: $12.50

RT headlight, RF marker, and left plate light
Parts: $17.24
Labor: $44.98

So, that's $1314.87 worth of service that was included in the $8,500 I paid (taxes and all). Did I get a good deal, OK deal, bad deal? The car is in great shape.

I'm happy I guess. This is the first "newish" car I have ever purchased so it has been a bit of a learning experience.

I changed mine at 125K, just because I was doing the belt. Pump wasn't leaking or making any noise.

Now it will be good to go just drive it and have fun. BOB

Oops, I forgot to mention that the pump did not end up getting replaced. The tech said it looked fine and that he didn't recommend replacing it at this time.

I just pass 123,000 on my car & since I plan on keeping it a long time I got this kit off ebay for the 198.75 delivered ;)

I called rather than go thru ebay because I wanted to change the thermostat too & they threw that & the gaskets for free :)

My Local garage, who is very good place for car repair, came up with a price of 199.00 & they still need to find 3 more parts, not counting tax on it too.

Wow was a difference, my engine is so much quieter, not that it was loud but it was strangely quiet, I guess it is on of those things that you get use to. :whisper:

I also had the Coolant & Transmission fluid changed, It has a screen not a filter. ;)

I also had the brake fluid change (why not everything else was being done)

Humm I did not get the Fuel injection done, (only1db aka Derrik, no one knew about the stuff you told me about). The garage I deal with uses Castle Power Packs. :phone:

I'll be doing the spark plugs & wires today, got them a while ago.

Humm time to do COTM :D
