Known this cat for about 10 years now, we're good friends. Ive always known his personal hygiene was bad, but now that he's been renting a room from me for the past year, i now know the rest of his surroundings are nasty. The pictures only tell half the story. I know he hasnt cleaned that bathroom since he moved in. The floor is covered in bottles, trash, and clothes. literally no carpet showing.
Dude is pretty gross, which whatever...his choice if he wants to look/smell like a hobo. I mean, deodorant and soap are expensive right? Not to mention a toothbrush that im pretty sure he doesnt own. Imagine the consequences...
I dont know what to do about it. I dont want to kick him out, but he's destroying my house. Ive confronted him about it before, and he says ok, and never does anything. We got swarmed with flies a few weeks back, and im pretty sure they had to of come from his room. There's literally bags of half eatten tacos and hamburgers sitting on the floor.
Anyone gracefully kicked a friend out before?

Set some rules. No food outside of the kitchen. Clean once a week at least. Take him on a talk show, like Maury or Jerry Springer. Or just kick him out!

they still sell mellow yellow? or is that how long those bottles have been there? lol
i'd tell him to either clean up his crap, or pack up his stuff AND clean out his crap.

It is very hard to do. Just clean it and send him a bill or up his rent and hire a teenager to clean it. You rented to a friend (that was dumb) do what you have to do.

This is a good idea. There's no way it could end badly! :abovelol:
good luck, one of my good friends, actually my best friend. was my roommy for quite some time. i cleaned 10x as much as he did and he let stuff get so gross i stopped using it.
its all about balance, if he doesnt pull his share let the landlord know and see if the landlord will say something, if you are the landlord then as much as it sucks, you have to stand up to your friend.
it took me saying that i was moving out for my buddy to start pulling *some* of the weight, but even then it wasnt enough, i eventually moved out anyway and left him fo find another room-mate. all with permission from the landlord of course. it sucks cause it toally ****ed up the awesome friendship we had. were still buddies but we dont hang out nearly as much cause of the whole ordeal

I cant do that. Im not his mother, although obviously she didnt help the situation. When we were in high school, she'd clean his room for him.
The black stuff on the toilet is i assume some sort of mold. its all over the tub and sink too. I doubt it will ever come clean.
I may have made a bad choice with just letting him live here. He pays rent on time, and i dont charge him much for it, hellava lot cheaper than he could get anywhere else. I didnt write a lease or anything, and he's never given any indication as to how long he's planning on living here.
Yea its my house, so there's no one else to go to. He pretty much lives in his room. Only eats fast food and microwave pizzas, so not a lot of time spent in the kitchen. The rest of the house is fairly clean and tiddy. No neat freak, but i like my stuff clean.
Id hate to kick him out, and there's no way in hell im cleaning it for him. Today was actually the first time ive been in there since he moved in. Im not snooping on him, he just said something about the toilet leaking and i wanted to make sure it was taken care of.
you could always tell him that as part of his cheap rent he needs to start upkeep on the bethroom and just let him treat his room as he pleases.. that way he still has his own "domain" and doenst feel stepped on, and the common rooms stay a bit cleaner.. im sure it would be a hard pitch.. and if hes anything like my old roommate he'l prolly do a total crap job on the cleaning anyway.. but it could be better then expected, and if not you can always try complaining a little more about how hes literally "ruining" the bathoroom and he can either clean it or pay to have it cleaned.. or replaced!

Call his mom and have her come clean it then!

I'd tell him that if it doesn't get picked up, that he'll be charged a fee for every week that it isn't clean.... I'd also make a point that even though you two are friends, that you are renting it to him, which makes you a landlord.. and there is a line between landlord and a friend....

his bathroom is attached to his room. Ive got my own, and his isnt accessible from the rest of the house.

Forreals. You don't want roaches... last summer when I was working as a temp for an apartment complex I found out about roaches and how hard it is to get rid of them.
Explain to this guy that he needs to clean it up or you have to throw him out. If you need the money then you can always find a cleaner person to rent the room too.
Tell him SuperGLS said to clean that **** up or an EXD posse will come to the house and mob assault him. That should work.

lay low for another month and let the trash build up, then sneak something under all of it that smells terrible, horrible, need-to-vomit-smell, and i'm sure he'll either get the picture or call his mommy.

Fire. Lots and lots of it.
Or just tell him that if he wants to continue to live there he needs to clean up his act. Or you could always hike his rent and hire a maid for him.

Alright Sean, I've kept my mouth shut for long enough. This is like the 6th time this week you've posted something exactly what I was gonna say before I could post it. I'm not warning you again, if this doesn't stop there's gonna be problems. I want the mods to start watching him, before this gets out of hand and something bad happens. GET OUT OF MY HEAD!
lol JFWY!
Lmao... that's nuts! Dude must weigh like 400 lbs. Seriously, give him 30 days notice, or GTFO. Especially with his choice of drink. Mellow Yellow and Mountain Dew? WTF? No Sprite?

surprisingly no, he's about 130. Funny you say sprite, cause thats the only other thing he drinks, but only at mc'ds since they dont have mountain dew

Sit him down and explain to him that you can't let him keep his room like that because of pest problems. Tell him that he has to clean up or find another place to live. Give him a specific deadline -- let's say 14 days -- to clean it up.
Just be serious about it but not mean (even if you have to kick him out). Then if he decides that your friendship is over at least you know that you kept your cool and that it wasn't your fault.
You could end up having health problems and such (and a pest problem like I said) if you don't do something -- it's not just dirty clothes on the floor, but food stuff. Ick.

If he's as good of a friend as you say he is, he will understand if you sit him down and explain to him that it's bugging you, and you don't want to have to worry about a potential pest/rodent problem. There's no need to be a dick about it, (not saying you are, but I know how easy it is to get irritated over this crap and come off as a dick) sometimes the easiest 30 second conversations can make a big difference.
But...if he's like my friends and agree to do it, and then let it go right out the other ear, I say kick his *** to the curb. If he hasn't learned by now that you need to clean up after yourself, then he's never going to learn. You can't live your whole life letting mommy clean up after you, unless you want to live in her basement all your life.

It's your house and it is getting trashed. Just tell him to get it cleaned up or something else will have to happen. "else" being whatever you can come up with.
