View Full Version : 1992 Nissan 240SX build/project/thing

OPZ

Well, since there are some people here that are really interested in the 240, and others that are a little curious, I figured I'd make a thread about it.

The skinny: 1992 Nissan 240SX (duh)
5-speed
94k on KA24DE

Modlist:
18" Falken rims (selling)
5ziegn catback (trying to sell/trade for a skunk2 catback)
Kazamma pillowball tie rod ends
New steering rack
New-ish clutch
Nismo power brace
Cusco tension rods and front sway bar
Viper alarm system
Ebay CAI

And also I'm using this car as a chance to learn how to do things my self...so far I've changed all the rotors and brake pads, except for the right rear...the sliders on the caliper are jammed, so I hope soaking in WD-40 will loosen them up.

Pics will be added tomorrow

I think the idea of using a project car to learn how to do things yourself is the most appealing part for me. Knowing you can mess something up and still drive to work the next day in your daily driver is pretty cool.

OPZ
04-28-2008, 12:06 AM
Exactly...after the debacle with the UDP, I decided I need to stop working on the XD, and use that to get to school.

And the best thing is, it's so freaking cheap to work on! Plus learning how to do stuff is quite amazing...really makes you feel good.

Silentwolf
04-28-2008, 12:12 AM
Cheap if you get one thats running. That was my problem, dam thing couldn't make it home. And i wasn't going to spend 2k for a shell. I'd still love to get a shell for cheap and ditch the engine and get the SR20DET as the first step. I know how to work on suspension and such but lil about engine work. Cause i'd really like to have a nice boosted vehicle but skittish about doing it to the Elantra.

OPZ
04-28-2008, 12:38 AM
Thats another great thing. The demand for them is only from a few up here in the north, ESPICALLY in an area where people are older or into trucks/muscle.

You can pick shells up here for dirt cheap as long as you don't care about the rust on them....THAT is the only bad part of owning a car up here.

Silentwolf

Depending on the amount, rust can usually be fixed.

240 is teh sex!

im trying to wrangle myself a 300ZX TT as my project/learn myself car.

you should invest in the RB26DETT engine swap kit. then you'l have one hell of a Silvia on your hands!!

cant wait to see when its finished!

That's a bit overkill IMO. My buddy has an RB25DET in his S13 and it is plenty!

OPZ

I'm debating doing the KA-T or SR20, just for cost reasons mostly. And while this is a "project" car, I don't want to have it down while having to fabricate mounts and such for the RB's.

That and I don't need THAT much hp.

I might have to buy a new caliper, which will push the 'on the road' date back AGAIN...argh!

I agree that might be overkill for cost reasons and function, since he has some rustiness i wouldn't expect too much $$ to be poured in right now. I'd look into an sr20 for my z also because i'd feel better with a more modern engine.

why stick with plenty when you can have more?! :D

i see what you mean about the more modern engine thing, but werent RB26's used in the R34 skylines? those aren't much older (if not newer) than the first Z32's, right?

Sorry, for some reason its the RB26 that gets me pants feeling a little tight, but nothing against the SR20 at all! that little nutcase can dump a load of hp if done right. but it is a lot of money to be dumping into a rusty shell, its more of a complete overhaul type of project, considering getting a new crate RB26 over to the states will put you back enough to buy a second, or even third S13/14/15!

Silentwolf
04-28-2008, 05:24 PM
RB26 is mated to an AWD powertrain and requires alot more work than the RB25 (which came in the R32).

SR20 can be quite nice. the JIC/Hankook Time attack racer is an S15 with the SR20 destroked n bored out to 2.2 making some good power.

And then there are all sorts of bracings and such sold on ebay to help stiffen up the chassis. Tanabe was what was recommended to me by the tuner shop here in Cocoa.

so what youre trying to say is that when you are done "learning" you are going to drift it? nice. so when can i buy this from you? i need something with a bit better gas mileage so i need to get 5spd import (i know more about them than anything else)

CornbreadXD
04-28-2008, 06:08 PM
well moonlite my current L28E is super old school but its a solid engine i could get a L28ET and have it bolt right in and be turbocharged but i'd still be working with old technology although its easier to get power than with a sr20

Thanks for the links silent!

Well the 'project' should be running tomorrow. I ended up giving up on the rear calipers and said **** it, and just bought 2 new ones. So far thursday's game plan is:

Wake up, drive back home from pitt
Tear off old rear calipers
Get new ones, put them on
Get inspected
Drive back to pitt in 240

It'll be simple and clean. No crazyness here, my goal is a daily drifter.

And it won't be red once I get some spare cash, currently looking at the same paint scheme as the g.coupe concept.

Vampyrate
05-05-2008, 01:47 AM
you dont need that much for a daily drifter. just suspension (coilovers, sway bars, strut bars) other than that, the power is just something that will make it a bit easier in the future. look up the drift bible and it explains all of it throughout

Well, if all goes well, it will be on the road this week...after running around, trying to find the ****ing bracket for the rear caliper, they are on the way and should be in tomorrow, so after work I'm going to pick them up and hopefully try and get it inspected.

And I still can't believe the price I paid for it...I'm so happy to own her.

05-05-2008, 03:39 PM
What was the price tag on it?

OPZ
05-05-2008, 08:29 PM
$1750.

Hell, the wheels alone are about 1k...and that's actually what I'm asking for them. Hopefully soon she'll be rocking some 15" Hyundai GT Alloy's! :D

Needed brakes, inspection, has minor rust issues that i've found so far, and the windshield wiper is ghetto rigged, as the stalk isn't working, but he pulled a spare for me, I just need to throw it in.

The ones going for that price around here all have the SR20 swap, so maybe if you want a cheap one you should just come here? haha

I bet!

Been seriously considering getting one of two cars when i get my bachelors degree. Either a S14 and convert the front end to S15 with an SR20 for fun, or 95 era Del Sol for MPG and look more at boosting the Elantra

OPZ

This is all I need. I'm so in love with it.

I threw up a craigslist ad with some stuff I need...

molding for the popout sunroof, bumper lenses...etc.

Hell, a whole new interior carpet/paneling would be nice...

Hopefully I can get those, and hopefully it passes inspection tomorrow. AHHHH!

Also, expect a fun picture to make its way up here soon...it's ganna be called spot the elantra parts on the nissan! :D

OPZ

It failed.

Cause of failure? He put it on the lift and there it was staring at us in the driveshaft channel, on the passenger side...a beautiful 2" hole straight to the passenger footwell.

Boo. He also found two other into the cabin, one by the front right wheel (makes sense, the car was in a crash on that side 2 owners ago), and one at the rear left tire.

He told me how to patch them up, and sent me on my way, so this weekend me and a friend are ganna patch it up, then I'm ganna try again next week.

Silentwolf

OPZ

Well, she's less holey, and inspected and on the road!

Already after 2 days, I've been asked if I drift it, 2 Honda's have tried racing me, numerous people check it out, and 1 dude in a dump-truck honked as I drove off.
It's such a different beast then the Elantra. I need to get rid of these 18's though...the ride is HORRIBLE.

SO we did the ghetto cleaning of the IACV right now, to try and get it running right. Worked for a little, but enough for me to have fun. I've finally went sideways, and let me tell you.

This is something every car enthusiast should experience. This car will rot before I sell it now.

Pete03GLS

yea, ive experienced going sideways... and not in the elantra mind you.

i drifted my dads SX4 in the winter :D

kickin the clutch? or e-brake Opz?

OPZ
05-24-2008, 01:33 AM
Clutch kick, mash the gas, and counter steer.

I still need a LOT of practice and work, but omg was it fun.

But so many choices with the car right now...racing seats, paint, rims....AHH!

CornbreadXD
05-24-2008, 12:30 PM
yeah just don't grind any gears doing it, when i first tried on the 280z i shifted to 2nd and then kicked the clutch and my hand slipped and i heard metal on metal then stalled, its fun though. practice on water or sand preferably water cause sand will pit body components. and buy some crappy tires!

Pete03GLS
05-25-2008, 02:35 AM
ive been looking around for a 240 today. found 1 interesting sale on craigslist, but i also have a friend here selling what i believe is a 5spd, red. so im gonna talk to him n c how much he wants n try to get a test drive.

but anyways, side note... when i drifted my dads sx4, in the snow... first time ive ever drifted... n i managed to keep it, under control... meaning... the car went side ways how i wanted it... and i recovered quickly n kept going, and repeated the entire process. i took it for a drive around my block, did a quick circle, and basically drifted at every corner. was soooooooooo much funnnnnn!

CornbreadXD
05-25-2008, 02:35 PM
yeah i do that every time it rains i try to slide at every turn, i need to upgrade to another lsd but i'd have to find a donor vehicle. OPZ you should post some videos, i'll try to get some too once i finish restoring my brakes/master cylinder

OPZ
05-26-2008, 02:05 AM
Well right now it still has the common stalling issue. I've ghetto cleaned the IACV valve so much I'm at the point its just getting replaced or cleaned at the dealer, because I refuse to fight against 16 years of rust taking the upper throttle body off to get to it.

Oh, and I wish I had an LSD... :(

OH, and I took the 18's off it, and put them on the elantra. Pics to come tomorrow of both....hehe

Here's some pics with the elantra steelies on it:

Update, pics will come later:

So I graduated friday with my first college degree, so as a present, I talked my parents into getting me an impact wrench (I'm going back, so I don't even consider it that I graduated...)

So first thing I did was put the other two OZ rims on the 240...they look pretty sharp. Sad thing is, found this once small hole...is now huge. So my friend is hopefully ganna weld a license plate to the hole.

And soon to come later in the year...KA-T power baby!

KeWLKaT
06-18-2008, 09:13 PM
WTF college degree? LoL you guys must be lucky down there. Here with the school system you can't get a degree before at least 22 (if you take a 3 yr program, I'm taking 4 yrs... ughhh...), and that's without taking a single extra semester between high school, cegep, and university. Good job!

OPZ

you can run a 300zx non-turbo big brake kit with your setup. I would try to get some Kouki tails. 180sx Type X wing. As for Engine swaps you can build anything but if your going to spend money on setting up something reliable and less expensive trusty ole sr20det or rebuild the ka24det there proving to be more than just a truck motor.... Dollar for dollar.

OPZ
06-19-2008, 01:07 AM
Future plans are to build the biggest crap-shoot of a KA-T ever. Homebrew for the win!

Also I'm thinking about a CF hood, possibly hatch, but probably not. The brakes we'll see what happens when I actually get a chance to start drifting. Tails are probably going to get some super bright bulbs, and smoked a little bit.

No wings. haha

Exactly, everyones all like, congrats! And im like, its just an AS.

And why not a 240...for only $50 a month, I sure do love mine.

Well, today was a busy day for the 240. I found one of the holes my friend patched seemed to have spread, most likly because of my one friend stepping on it...and he decided to cut it out and weld a peice over (I let him, since hes learning to weld, he's getting good)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/OPZ/1992%20Nissan%20240SX/0619081803.jpg

9" by 10"!!!!

Well it took him a while, but now there's a 22 gauge piece of aluminum I think there now, and he just put body filler over it. We're ganna POR it tomorrow. Here's a quick pick of my friend workin on it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/OPZ/1992%20Nissan%20240SX/0619081934.jpg

The hood's up because while he did that, me and a friend adjusted the timing, so now my car runs right and doesn't stall at every stopsign/light, and then I decided to finally do the sleepy eye mod. So here's how she stands now!

Well, next on the list for the 240:

Fuel filter and Walbro 255 fuel pump. Slowly ganna get ready to boost the KA. No idea when she'll be ready/done...hopefully not to long.

Shes hesitating and stalling a lot, so I'm hoping the fuel filter and pump will fix that. I also plan on getting a new MAF soon, that might be a culprit also. And while it's down, I'm ganna clean the IACV the RIGHT way, rather then spray carb cleaner in it while its running.

But a couple problems are still there:

My windshield wipers don't work and my cruise doesn't work. I'm quite sad by these...any ideas possibly?

Alright, update time:

Recently purchased and awaiting install:

SR20 370cc injectors
Z32 fuel filter
Walboro 255 fuel pump.

I'm also going monday to pick up 2 teardrop stock alloy's, and possibly a 90k mile engine for a ridiculously low price.

Also awaiting total amount needed to buy a T25 off someone from ka-t.org.

Next spring is going to be sweet. :)

Oh, just picked up a T25 with goodies, and monday I'm getting the engine and wheels.

Yay car!
