Mario Kart Wii?

Who bought it? It came out yesterday. I got a copy from Bestbuy ($49.99) and an additional wheel ($9.99). I've got about 3 hours in the game, between some 50cc cup races and playing online. I really like the online games, because it's all people - which is always better than CPU players - and you are ranked to race together according to skill rankings.

I think it's awesome that 2 people can play together on the same Wii online with others. My wife and I were playing together online.

Normally I would have been all over this. However it's the end of the semester and I have to focus on my education, pff. And actually, I was talking with Reece the other day about this, I'm less likely to play video games alone these days. I think I'm growing up and it sucks. Or it could just be that I'm watching cricket everyday instead.

I got the hang of it immediately. I've only used the wheel, which is about the same as just holding the controller sideways. There's nothing too special about the wheel, other than it's got an extra button for "B" so it's easier to reach. I thought everything was responsive and good enough. It's good to the point that you don't need to think about it, just drive and focus on what's happening in the game.

I think my wife got this for me as a gift. I was talking about it with friends yesterday and she asked me if I had bought it on the sly and I joked that I did (even though I didn't) and she gave me the look of death.
(The premise to this is that I say that I want something, she buys it and holds on to it to give to me as a gift, but in the meantime I usually end up buying it cuz I can't wait that long, and then she gets mad at me...)

I finished off the 50cc cup races last night. Then went back to playing people on the interwebz. I have only unlocked 2 extra characters so far (King Boo and Diddy Kong), 2 extra go-carts, and the 50cc mini-bikes. I really want to get the feature unlocked where I can drive as my Mii, instead of a Nintendo character. I think that's like the last feature in the game though... it'll be a while.

My son and I only played a few games last night. I let him use the one wheel we have. I tried just using the Wii controller sideways but it was a little difficult. I switched to the wireless game cube controller and did much better. We have Kart for the game cube and I guess I'm just used to playing Kart with that controller. I will have to try the wheel and also using the Wii controller with the nunchuck to see which of the 4 ways is easiest.

Special credits
Win all trophies in a class to view the credits and see a congratulations screen featuring your Mii with Mario and Peach. Win all Grand Prix Cups to get another congratulations screen featuring your Mii with all the racers.
Quick start
When the countdown starts, wait until the “2″ begins to disappear, then hold 2 to get a boost at the start of the race.
Quick recovery
When you fall into an obstacle, press 2 precisely when you land to get a temporary boost.
Profile name stars
You can add a star next to your profile name on the results screen and the Wi-Fi races by completing all Grand Prix races with a certain rank:
One star profile name: Earn a “One Star” rank in all Grand Prix races.
Two star profile name: Earn a “Two Star” rank in all Grand Prix races.
Three star profile name: Earn a “Three Star” rank in all Grand Prix races.
