View Full Version : 1am - wrong time to knock on someones door!

so im sitting here, checking out a few threads about the track day the local forum just had...i had been hearing footsteps for the last 15 minutes or so outside...theres 4 apartments on the upper level where im at (with wood decking, so its loud when people walk on it), and 4 below. didnt think much of it...car alarm went off for a few seconds a bit ago, looked out, car was leaving...no biggie...

then, i hear a knock on my door. my stomach dropped for a second...when i got home earlier, i had taken my gun and holster off and left it on the kitchen table. grabbed it, came to door, check the peep hole, see its my neighbor...kinda ghetto woman, maybe early 30s, never really talk to her, just the normal "hey" when passing, etc. ask her through the door 'whats going on', but couldnt hear what she was saying...put my foot behind the door, cracked it open to see what she wanted...

apparently she found 2 keys on a ring near the bottom of the steps of our breezeway, and thought checking with everyone at 1am was the best time to check. wtf? i would think taping a note up saying "if you lost keys, i found them, ill leave them at the office" or "call me tomorrow"

went to take a piss after i locked up again, and my knees were still shaking the whole time. definitely not something that i want to deal with again

So wait, even with a gun and knowing that it was your woman neighbor you felt unsafe?

You are one weird cookie.

You were that scared that your knees were shaking?

i didnt check the peep hole then grab my gun in that order. if someones knocking at 1am, thats the first thing im grabbing, then seeing who the F it is, and what they want. i didnt really feel unsafe after realizing who it was

reece - you never had one of those things where your stomach drops and your heart jumps up to 180 bps instantly? it was one of those. just had that rush running through me. not something you deal with daily and are ready for it. lol

Dude, you live in the wrong neighborhood.

^^^ seriously. I never worry about anything like that when I'm home. I don't even care if I lock the door on most nights.

I know what you mean. If you're scared by the shock of it, but then realize it's someone safe, your body still reacts to it, even minutes afterward.

A good friend of mine had someone knock on his door last year, and he made the mistake of checking the peephole first, and saw three guys in masks. He ran to get his shotgun, but they kicked in the door before he could make it back to his room.

They didn't shoot him or anything, but they did steal his Xbox.

KeWLKaT

^^^ But he had a shotgun, so why didn't he shoot them? Sounds like a weaksauce excuse for me.

He ran to get his shotgun, but they kicked in the door before he could make it back to his room.

They came in, guns drawn, and threw him to the floor, he had no time to get to his room. He made it to the other side of the living room, and that was it.

I suppose I should add that he's a pretty big guy, and can't move terribly fast. :abovelol:

Oh, the way I read it was like he ran back, got his gun, but they kicked the door in before he was able to come back with his gun, haha. Which is why it seemed a bit ****ed up.

Yeah, I can see the confusion...I didn't explain very well.

Evan, do you ever hear gunshots in the middle of the night? If so, it's time to move.

Evan, do you still live in the same place you did when I was there (Hyundai in the Hills meet)? It seemed like a pretty ok neighborhood to me.

The other day some young kids came to my door and wanted to tell me about them so I could vote for them for something. They were dressed too thugged out for me so I told them I had to make dinner (which wasn't a lie).

Why would someone ring the bell at at 1 AM if they've come to do you harm? That's just bizarre.

Because, you won't expect them to do something like that. It would be real easy to rush in and take someone down at 1am when they think they're just answering the door.

Don't forget we live in the United States.

gunshots...not regularly. i have seen a few black guys lighting fireworks off on new years and then watched one pull a handgun of some sort from his waistband and fire it off into the air. the neighborhood isnt horrible, but it did have a good amount of section 8 when i first moved in...shortly after, though, they stopped accepting it, so its gradually getting better...needless to say, theres still a select crowd of people i wouldnt want to encounter outside after dark

^ I hope it's at least a relatively inexpensive place to live. ;)

You sure it was your neighbor and not some crackhead or prostitute?

Sometimes, prostitutes or crackheads will ask or say some kind of "secret" expression after they knock on the door so you know they're legit and to make sure they're at the right place. Like.... "do you have a light?" or "I lost a dog, have you seen him?"

Seriously.

evan938
05-05-2008, 11:29 AM
no, i know it was my neighbor. not too many people look like her and have a nice tattoo on their neck..lol

but yeah, its cheap to live here...2br/2ba, 1000sq/ft for under 600/mo.

damn section 8's tear **** up, i know in cleveland the renovated the housing project areas and kicked all the section 8's out of one area and into another closer to where I live, like 1/2 mile away.

The apartment building I lived in back in '96 in Monroeville started letting section 8's into the building about 3 months after I moved in. All of a sudden, the wallpaper began to be vandalized, stuff was carved into the elevator's stainless steel panels and the plastic light diffuser in the elevator was melted (with something like a cigarette lighter). People began to pull up outside the 8 floor, 30-unit per floor building and shout to get a specific person to come to the window from one or more units, etc.

Needless to say, I moved out after my lease was up. It was a shame because it had been a good place to live until then. :(

I guess when you're not paying the rent and living there for free (section 8), you don't care if you mess up the place. If it gets bad enough, the Gov'mnt will just give you a different place to live.

Over the summer I worked at a low income apartment complex that also accepted Section 8 vouchers. There was some really nasty people there. You can't imagine how some people live in such filth (like Tommy's roommate times 5). You are right, for some reason the majority of those people don't care at all. Some of them were nice/respectable people though.

kylemorg
05-05-2008, 04:37 PM
^ You have a point -- I'm sure that not all section 8 people are vandals / slobs. I like where I live now -- it's not directly on the bus route, so there'll be no section 8 there (hopefully)

It's a shame that people act out in their own neighborhoods. Like the old saying goes... "don't $hit where you live"

Sorry you've got to put up with that B.S., Evan.

Just one more reason I'll take the punishment for living in BFE. It's not fun being penalized for living someplace safe. But I at least know that to GET to my house they had to do something deliberate and planned. So knock on my door at 1am and we have a problem. . .

^ what if bob lives in the middle of the forrest of nowhere

So anyone want to clarify what exactly a "section 8" person is, other than they don't pay for rent and live for free.

From what I gather its people on welfare?

SuperGLS
05-05-2008, 09:02 PM
They don't always live there for free. In fact, in most cases they do pay a portion of the rent. Whether it be $16 or $574 of the $1000 rent. It depends on income and other things.

joph09
05-05-2008, 10:47 PM
ah low income housing people. Here low income housing people have their own complexes and neighborhoods, I think.

SuperGLS
05-05-2008, 10:57 PM
Well, it's different. There are local income places, but all that means is that you have to be in a certain income bracket in order to move in. Say between $38,000 and $45,000 for one occupant, $38,000 and $47,000 for two occupants, etc etc. The rent is set at a lower rate as compared to "regular" apartment complexes, and people that make more money have to rent at places with regular (high) rent.

Then there are some apartment places that are mixed with a certain number of units as low income housing and regular. Generally this type of mixed community does not accept Section 8 vouchers though.

And back on topic... Evan, don't be a scaredy cat.

i had one of those moments tonight at my gfs house. out of no where we hear what turned out to be some hobo's dog trying to tear at her dog through a hole in their fence. thing was half way through and shot about 12 times with a little BB rifle before it gave up. cops refused to do anything about it even though this particular hobo is well known for starting trouble in the area.

needless to say, those "180bpm in 2 seconds" moments are crazy scary, even in ur case when u find out there's nothing to worry about.

damn, rough neighborhood. I've lived in some bad areas but never worried bout a knock.

To clarify, a lot of apartments have partial section 8 because you can get very low rate mortgages from the government if you are willing to provide like 20% of your complex to section 8.

After my car was broken into last month I keep my gun close at hand while at home. Any noise I hear I get up and check just in case. My Elantra and "Her" Jetta now stay in the garage at night, but that doesn't always stop everyone.
