OK, not really.
I just realized I've done a lot since I've made any updates here. So here it goes...
My car desperately needed some brake upgrades to handle the heat of an intense track day...
1.) PowerSlot cryo-treated rotors w/ StopTech Posiquiet street pads (Pagid Blue pads standing by for track days), and ATE Super Blue brake fluid
http://www.gldomain.com/STI/Brakes/IMG_0673_800px.jpg
And then Tirerack had a good deal on these wheels and I just had to get it...
2.) 17x8.5" TRMotorsport MT1 wheels with 255/40-17 Falken RT615's...
http://www.gldomain.com/STI/2008-02-09/IMG_0725_600px.jpg
Then my car was hit by hail and I decided to take the opportunity to buy some CF replacement parts...
3.) Varis CF hood
http://www.gldomain.com/STI/Varis%20CF%20Hood/IMG_0847_600px.jpg
4.) Varis CF trunk lid
http://www.gldomain.com/STI/Varis%20CF%20Trunk%20Lid/IMG_0873_600px.jpg
And just this past weekend I installed...
5.) Recaro Speed seat
http://www.gldomain.com/STI/Recaro%20Speed/IMG_0895_600px.jpg
So here's the complete mod list as it stands now:

why not change the passenger seat? i dont think it looks right with 2 different seats in the front.

Heh, well there are a few reasons:
1.) By swapping out the seat I'm removing the side airbag, which obviously involves some potential safety and insurance issues. But if by chance I am involved in a wreck, I'd rather deal with it for myself, and not my passenger too.
2.) Recaro seats are expensive. And buying one is half the price of two.
3.) Having it match isn't worth $1K to me.
That said, the seat is my favorite mod so far. It's more comfortable, doesn't bounce as much, holds me in place much better, and allows me to sit around 3" lower than the stock seat did which gives me some much needed head room.

Thanks.
And yeah, I almost didn't go through with it. But the new wheels are a couple pounds lighter and 1/2" wider than the BBS wheels. And now I'm able to run 255mm wide tires without rubbing, which was the big motivation.

Dammit Steve, if you keep posting these pictures you're going to make me get one of these...and my wallet won't like that.
Seriously though, the car is b-e-a-utiful.

Ya, I'm with Super.
And if your car was in F&F, it would be the least gaudy  You've seen the 08' STI thats to be in the next one right??

Disagree, actually have to say that the car looks incomplete without it.

nice work so far, carbon fiber doors next?
SWortham
05-06-2008, 06:11 PM
Heheh, no wasn't planning on it. Then again, I wasn't planning on the carbon fiber trunk & hood either. After the hail damage one thing kinda led to another.
Not even sure if carbon fiber doors exist for this car.
EDIT -- Oh, wow, Seibon makes CF doors. Looks like it'd cost me $3,400 for all 4. And then I could get CF front fenders for $750.
Haha, no thanks. That's just toooo much money.

What speeds do you hit during those time trials around cones?
At that last one I hit a top speed of about 78 mph. And at 0 angle of attack that would amount to about 80 pounds of downforce with this wing. Of course since it's adjustable it can go up from there but I figure I'll leave it at 0 angle most of the time to minimize drag. The nice thing about it is just how efficient it is. For every 10 pounds of downforce, there's only about 1 pound of drag.
But at Motorsport Ranch I hit speeds up to 115 mph. And at that speed there should be around 160 pounds of downforce generated by the wing.

After seeing the newest pictures of your car, I can now say this:
Please have my babies.
My goal one day is to have an STi identical to yours, except it would be gunmetal gray and i'd have bronze/gold rims
Pete03GLS
07-31-2008, 11:54 PM
even at 0 angle... it still generates more drag than not being there at all. altho... since it is a functional mod... i guess its ok... however... if it has to be a wing... it shud b the sti wing.

That'd be cool. One thing is for sure, nobody would mistake your car for being stock.

The STI wing doesn't do as much, it's not adjustable, and it's 10 pounds heavier. It does look better though, I'll give you that.
Heh, I've been getting lots of looks from people the past few days. Some people have even approached me and told me I have a nice looking car. For others it's obviously not their thing so they just kinda stare and think to themselves, "That thing... is ridiculous." LOL, I'm OK with that. It's all functional...

That wing looks stupid IMHO. Why do you post on an Elantra site if you own a STI? If your car were slammed with a bodykit the wing might work, but with that wing, what looks like a stock suspension, and no kit, you are asking to be named rice. Seriously, you have a really nice car. Don't screw it up. Your car cost easily double what my XD cost and I would never put that wing on my car. Why in the world would you put it on a 30k plus car?

Why in the world would you put it on a 30k plus car?
Because I can.
And because it's a stinkin' rally car that I actually race. And with 350 hp the car wasn't as well planted at speed as it should be. It's not meant to be a show car, or a garage queen.
I realize some people may think I did this for the looks. And heck, even I remember criticizing my friend for having a huge wing on the back of his Eclipse. Although to be fair, his car was FWD. But it's really all done for some functional downforce.

you have 200 posts. you have no idea who this guy is. please don't ***** out an ORIGINAL forum member. kthx! And how is it rice if it's functional? Its not a honda that does like 60mph. It's an AWD rally machine that can get to 100 before your car can get to 50. It requires downforce. If anything, the window spoiler was rice when he had NO spoiler on it, but it can't be removed and have the holes in the frame look good. With the spoiler it looks complete.

Not only have you confirmed your stupidity, but your arrogance and lack of time on these boards show as well. Steve had an 02 White GLS 5spd. He did plenty of things and then moved on. He was also a mod on EXD long before your sorry *** likely had a liscense. So stuff it with the arrogant "why post on an elantra site if you have an sti" crap.
Second, "slammed with a bodykit" is everything Steve-o here is not for. His car is functional and does get out on track days. Unlike your sorry POS he's hitting 115 on the straights at motorsports Ranch down there in hot *** Texas.
Just because you are an idiot with poor taste does not mean that everyone here is the same.

Steve, it's not my style, but it looks right, much better than the STi wing but not as good as it was nekkid. I like cars like I like my woman, nekkid.

Yeah, the ECU tune affects fuel, timing, and boost. So it's pushing 17 psi rather than the 14.5 psi of a stock STI. It is an off-the-shelf / slightly conservative tune though so if I wanted more power I could get it by taking it to a shop with an AWD dyno and getting tuned professionally. I should be able to get another 30 hp or so by doing that and still have a reliable car. Of course, the Evos are capable of a whole lot more with the stock block and turbo. But, I still prefer the half liter advantage the STI has.

I'm not sure if this is off topic of not, but I'm getting an sti in a couple years and don't know too much about the aftermarket (my mindset has always been that its such a great car stock, why mod it)
Is the extra boost detramental to the engines lifespan? And how much in gains can you see off of the simple mods like ecu, exhaust, and intake?
And one other thing, you modded the suspension? Isn't the suspension already pretty damn amazing?
BobMs_wht2k2

I know steve is gonna pipe up here soon. . .but the stock shocks leave a little to be desired. IIRC, that is the biggst upgrade suspension wise.
The Subie flat-4's are amazing engines, both in power output and durability. It's not uncommon to see the Forresters 2.5L N/A engine with 250k+. On an engine already designed for FI application, an extra 3psi over stock is a minimal change to it in terms of durability.
Intake, exhaust (downpipe and cat back) and ECU changes are HUGE! A local guy with a WRX wagon was putting down close to 300hp with a custom tune, dp and intake.

^ What Bob said.
To add to that, it's hard to find STI's with very high mileage because it's not the #1 choice for a car to take on road trips. That, and it's only been around since '04. But I did find a guy who had the COBB AccessPort stage 2 just as I do and he put 140K miles on the car without any engine problems.
Also, I think the AccessPort ECU tune and downpipe gives you the most bang for the buck. You'll get maybe 5 hp more with a catback exhaust on top of that. But surprisingly, swapping out the intake in this car is practically useless. Some people have even reported a loss in power with a CAI. I think the only way to get power from it is if you have your car dyno tuned afterwards. But even then I'm not sure how much improvement you'd see when the stock intake is already a CAI of sorts.
As for the suspension, the stock KYB struts leave a little to be desired as Bob said. The damping curves are such that the car can tend to be a bit bouncy on the highway. You'll get a better ride quality and better control with something like Ohlins, Bilstein, or the KW struts that Racecomp Engineering will be coming out with. There are also tons coilover options. But I went with the stock springs & good struts route for better ride quality.

Wow, thats good to know. I always hate to see the turbo swapped evo's getting all the hype; I love the sti, always have.
Two more years till i'm out of school, just hope there are still 06-07 models out there with low miles
yeah the flat 4's are insane.. there's 500+hp subies running around out there. hands down the best bang for your buck, followed by the mitsu evo.

Wow, didnt even see your post until just now. Well, for what it is, another $1500 for 50 more horsepower and better handling isn't bad at all! Hopefully I will be able to find one in good condition though, I wont be in a position to get one for another 2-3 years (just a junior in college) and people are going to be scooping them up because you can only get the hatch now
