: How far do you commute

I read a statistic today that said:
"More than half of all Americans live less than 5 miles from where they work."

However, to me it seems most people I know/see, commute much further than that, so here's a poll. How far do you commute one way to work (or school, if applicable).

EDIT: Rule change.

If you and your spouse/significant other both commute, average them. I.e. you drive 7 miles, she drives 5, your average is 6. This will even out those who live right next to work, but who's spouse may have to drive 30 miles.

Her 30 (each way) or my 22 each way. . . . doesn't matter they're both "over 15". Everyone I work with, save 2 people, live more than 15 miles away as well.

right now its 25 miles for me and my dad (working at the same place and carpooling) and when mom gets back to work she's about 20 miles. my second job tho is litterally across the street.

I'll add in mine too: I drive 7 miles, my wife drives 3. But, my wife is transferring to a different school now that she has her MS and will be a reading specialist there. The school is being built, but I can see it from the end of my block - so she'll be about 1 mile, if that.

I work the whole state so not really the same everyday. To give you an idea of the mileage I do, my van this month turned one year old and I have just over 54,000 miles on it (it has been a slow year, I typically put over 65K on a vehicle a year).

This is on a 2007 Ford Econoline fullsize van with a V-8 that averages 15mpg.

My wife drives about 30 miles one way everyday. This includes dropping off - picking up the kids at school.

It is their truck. They pay for fuel, maintenance, tolls, parking, washing, etc. And when I rack up 120,000 miles they buy me a new one :)

9 miles each way for me.

Although, sometimes during rush hour it can take 30 minutes to get home, whereas it takes just 12 minutes with light traffic.

I used to work about 20 miles away though. During rush hour, that commute sucked!

The reason for the results of the study is probably because all of the people that live and work in the big cities. There is a lot of people that live and work in the top 10 largest cities of Americaland. That probably is why you get such a number.

Even strething that out to the top 25 US cities (by 2005 estimates) that's only 34.4 Million.

Still, the Census bureau says 80% of Americans live in "Urban Areas."

I should add, my commute to school is 30 miles one way.

This week for my class that I am taking which has various locations in the DC area each day I've been driving for about 30 minutes in heavy traffic (that without traffic would be 12 minutes or so) to the Metro and then taking the Metro for about an hour. Each day the Metro costs about $13.50 for a roundtrip and parking.

Mike, I don't know anyone else that has a commute like me (or even under 10 miles). I don't know.

i think when i checked it, its around 17.4 miles one way to my work. the g/f works ~1 mi around the corner...luckily, i make my own schedule, and has minor requirements...i can work 9am-7pm with an hour lunch mon-thurs, and 9-1 on friday...she works 9-6 m-f, so i drive home to work, then she takes the car to her work, gets off at 6, waits for me until 7, and ride home

saves a bunch on gas over having to take 2 cars...as soon as she gets down 5 speed enough i can trust her to drive from my work to hers and back, without issues, we'll take my DD and get ~35mpg+ combined

Do you have any education past highschool? I would think not, because that was a bit offensive.

I said most not all. And yeah you can have a real job close to home, but most highschoolers and such tend to so most often. I was a pharm technician, with proper certification, in my local CVS for some time and I lived half a mile away so I know there are real jobs close to home, thus the most in my last post. Not being hostile just pointing out the discrepencies, and why they occure, found in that statistic hyunelan2 posted. Got no problem with people that work there.

Incorrect.

My wife and I are firm believers in living/working in the same community. I'm sure there are instances where this cannot happen (your job only exists in Manhattan - and a shoebox apt. costs $5billion/month, for example). For the most part, I think a lot more people would be much happier in their lives if they would just move closer to work, or get a job closer to home. Commuting is for suckers.

If I had a way to jump the 1/4 mile wide river it would be less than 1 mile.

Yeah, rivers can be a PITA. The first place I worked after college (Nuclear Plant), I could see the cooling towers from my parents house. It was about ~5 miles directly to the place, but because I had to cross over 2 rivers, it was a 30-minute commute to get over the bridges, then circle back.

my commute has changed in the last month.
started dating a non-driver. its pretty killer on gas, but honestly still working out well..

Here is my day:
Home- Her place- Work- Home- Her Place- Home
and thats if we don't go out!

Thats about 30 miles a day. so @ 25mpg (if im lucky) and $4 pg, im paying nearly 5 bucks a day in driving. times 5 for the week then times 4 for the month.. and damn. im spending 100$ a month just to be seeing someone. not to mention the additional miles im putting on the car getting it closer to that warranty expiration.

The only reason its working out now is because she picks up the tabs at bars, restaurants, and she buys some groceries. and we have been out a lot. so for the moment we are still evening out a bit.. well see how it goes :P

My wife and I are firm believers in living/working in the same community.

Me too. I love pulling down decent $ from a real career (12 years and counting) and having a ten minute commute! I just can't figure out the people who buy a new place to live 30+ miles / 30 minutes or more each way from their work, then complain about their commute.

I consider drive time to and from work part of my work day.

Now, if you're stuck where you live, it's one thing -- I'm only talking about people who move and plan to work at the same place, yet don't move closer when they relocated their home.

I ride my bicycle sometimes, about 1/3 of the time.
