So I ordered a apexi n1 muffler and silencer on eBay. Used for 7 bucks plus shipping. So I could trade my buddy for his Greddy sp2 muffler and resonator. I got the muffler a lil bit ago and put the silencer in my fartcan to see if that would quiet it down a bit. NOOOOOOOOOO! it actually made it louder? I have yet to drive it and see if it's quieter in travel but whatever I'm not concerned that much. I just thought a silencer was supposed to quiet it down?

I've noticed that the shorter silencers don't do much, at least on my KORE catback muffler (cylinder muffler). The longer "neck" silencers worked better for me.

I'd lost my original silencer, and tried one of the short eBay ones. It didn't help much. Then I tried one of the longer eBay ones and it works well.

They have to be tuned in length to the resonance of the muffler packing. You might want to try different lengths of silencers and / or different center tube diameters.

I don't get why people put large exhaust systems on the car and don't think of the noise before hand. They could add a resonator in the system to keep it quiet instead of restricting the exhaust flow with a silencer.

I don't have a large exhaust system....I have stock size piping mandrel bent from the cat >>>>>>Back to a 20 dollar fart can. Since I added the header it's annoyingly loud (think B16 Honda Buzz) and I'm putting a resonator and a Greddy sp2 muffler on this weekend. I have the silencer from the Apexi I bought to trade for the Greddy. I just thought maybe It would quiet it down a bit but it didn't.

Also make sure you don't have a leak at any of the joints in the exhaust piping. My Kore catback was louder than I liked, and when I was under the car for something else I found that the bolted flange near the rear axle was loose and not sealing at all. Once I re-sealed the joint and replaced the bolts with larger ones / lock washers, it quieted down quite a bit.

yeah I don't have to worry about that the only flange I have is from the cat. the rest is a full piece bent over the axle and to the muffler. I didn't think he could have bent it that way buy Denny Ergler is the Exhaust man!

You spent $20 on a fart can and you expect it to be quiet?

3 years ago. It has been worn out for a while now. lol.... when I had the cat back installed I just kept the same muffler because I didn't wanna spend money on a new one and have to replace it again. I was waiting and researching and listening to other Hyundai's. I found that the greddy sp2 muffler and nice size resonator sounds really well on the beta 2's. I'm not sure if the pipe sizing will affect the sound of the exhaust but we will see Saturday when I weld it all together.

Post some sound clips and a break down of all the pats you used. Thanks BOB

Ok yesterday I was fiddling around with my exhaust system and put a different fart can (from a previous car) on my car and put the silencer in it. Now my car is almost stock quiet. It has a little growl to it and from like 2500 to 3000 rpm I get a (pop can on a bike tire bwaaaaawaaawaaa) then it goes back to almost stock quiet? If I can figure out what that (annoying) noise is I may have found myself a nice and quiet free flowing exhaust setup for myself.
BTW there is absolutely NO RESONANCE at all humming inside the car :D:D:D that makes me triple happy.

dude if you have header, and you use a silencer its still going to be loud. ive experienced that, its better to run without it

My KORE catback picked up a resonance at about 2-3K rpm. I think the exhaust pipe resonates with the exhast gas pipe length. I wrapped all the exhaust pipe from the cat back to the muffler with somewhere around a 50' piece of 2" header wrap and the resonance went away. You could try that.

I was thinking of doping this. Where is a good place for header wrap and how much does it cost????

I just went the quick route and picked up a roll of the 2" wide wrap at Autozone or Pep Boys -- I can't remember which. I think it was under $40 for the roll, but you can probably get it much cheaper online.

Don't bother with the crappy stainless zip-tie type things to hold the wrap on -- they don't tighten down as much as you need. Use those adjustable hose clamps (that look like this:http://www.plumbingworld.com/marinegradeclamps.html) to hold the wrap on.

Wrap it pretty tightly -- you want to block the resonance so it has to be tight around the pipe.

Wear glasses or goggles when you do the wrapping. Dirt and dust come off of the exhaust pipe, and small glass fibers come off of the wrap when you're putting it on, and it's not fun to get that in your eyes.

DO NOT WRAP THE CAT CONVERTER!!! you'll burn up the catalyst block.

is 50 foot too much??? I ordered 2 15' rolls for $7.95 each from summit. I guess I'll start from the muffler end and work my way forward. If I don't have enough I'll just get another roll. ON a side note what the heck is this stuff made of?? My buddy says it's just Fiberglas mat in roll form? just curious.....

I don't know if 30' will get you all the way from the muffler to the flange behind the second cat, but try it and see. You may not have to wrap the whole thing to get rid of the resonance.

Your buddy is correct --it is simply fiberglass woven to form a thick fabric-like strip.

Okay so I ditched the fart can for a Greddy sp2 I had laying around for a while. I like the tone it has now but I think I'm still gonna add a resonator in the mix to maybe make it a deeper throaty growl. I got 1 picture from my phone and subsequently laid the phone on the trunk when I got in the car and lost it down the Highway ! The phone still works but I'm glad it wasn't the wife's camera I lost. anyways here is a pic and as soon as I get the battery charged I will post a video.
I know the car is dirty but that's ok. I need to get my hanger adjusted so it fits in the hole I have cut out more straight but I'm happy thus far.

Yeah as far asI know I thought about it, and I thought about it, I don't want to let my baby go just yet! It is very tempting but I have too much time into this thing to start anew.

So I figured I'd update this here
My exhaust is setup now like this

Obx Header, OEM 2nd cat, 2.5 inch cat back to a Greddy Sp 2 muffler. It sounds really nice and I am happy with it now. While I was working under the car yesterday My daughter thought that since she could fit her arm in the 3.5 inch muffler tip she should fill it with whatever she could find. It was filled with leaves, a couple of Polly Pockets and a granola bar lol so in the clip you will see remnants blowing out and a little poof of smoke. I figure what I couldn't get out will blow out or burn off.

video/sound clip: hittin about 4k rpms cold start this morning. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=40949924

Nice but a little too PSFFFFT sounding for me. Needs a resonator.
