View Full Version : CAI does suck water into engine

Tho I wish there was a video camera nearby when i blew a massive cloud of white smoke out the back of my exhaust and the car stalled out but none the less the intake took in water and tried to kill my engine:mad: I have SRI'd it permanently now to prevent any future issues. When i took the bottom section of the AEM intake off, the filter had a decent sized section that was black from all the water. I wasn't flooring it or revving past 4000rpm at all but that didn't seem to matter. I got it parked somewhere safe nearby after getting it started again 5 mins later and went to get methal hydrate(gasline antifreeze). Put a small splash of it in the gas tank and let it run a few mins and went on my merry way. Car is running fine now and hasn't given me anymore issues. So for anywhere in the world that is wet alot of the time.....CAI is bad news:hammer:

Hey, at least your ride is OK. That could have gone a lot worse for you I suppose.

make sure you get an oil change and to change your spark plugs..... I posted this about hydrolocking a while ago, hope it helps.:

Same here. Well, small drops and splashes that get on the filter won't hurt because if it does manage to get up the pipe, it will likely sizzle and evaporate somewhere in the manifold before reaching the combustion chamber. It's submerging the fillter in water that you need to worry about!

CAI does suck water into engine
Was this questioned before hand?

use a bypass
lovemylantra

cornbread nailed it on the head .. i installed my CAI and not worried about water cause its not gonna rain or puddle up over here for at least the next 3 months. and once that time comes im gonna wind up cutting the longer pipe on my intake to fit the bypass filter i have so there wont be any worries of hydrolock ... go on ebay and find one that fits the size of your pipe ... i bought mine for 20 dollars

How about not driving thru 2ft deep puddles!

Or just do a Long Ram Intake.

Or just do a Long Ram Intake.
that's wat my AEM upper intake peice is, basically a long ram intake now, intake filter is right behind the battery. I dunno bout the bypass idea.....i'd been driving around for awhile on the cai and not had a problem till the other day......the car is lowered and the wheel well is 100% exposed(long story) so that is why i was sucking up water so harsh but in the end I'd rather not think about it happening again so it's SRI for a very long time...... :( I miss my 3rd and 4th gear torque tho
How about not driving thru 2ft deep puddles!
zero puddles could have been 2ft deep, i'd have destroyed a rim had I hit a 2ft deep puddle.....even a 1 ft deep puddle u'd be fukin up your rim hardcore!!!

I was lowered with my CAI for 3 years, even had it through the tropical storms we've gotten. I never had any issues.

ok, he just said he doesnt have the liner on in the wheel well.
problem numero uno.
Silentwolf

Well that will certainly add to it. But i will bet you that he drove thru a deep enough puddle and wont admit it.
Tommy

it could be 2 inches of water, you get enough spray up into the wheel well with no cover, of course its gonna get wet.
Silentwolf
06-08-2008, 07:50 PM
Not enough to clog an engine.
Tommy
06-08-2008, 11:24 PM
if you say so. constant spray upward towards the intake tube sounds like a good way to suck up enough water to me though.

Maybe but no matter it is a bad idea to run without a wheel well covering since parts of the car that are not supposed to be that exposed that much suddenly are. The whole fuse harness runs above that wheel well covering.

the bypass is your best best if you dont have a fenderwall shield lol. how could not know about that idea?!?! the whole purpose of the bypass is to stop water from reaching your engine if you have an intake. but do what you thinks best .. as far as your question you got my answer

Not enough to clog an engine.
tell that to my friend who was cruisin around with me all day prior to this(him in his car and me in mine), he would have told me that I hit a massive puddle.

some ppl are not perfect like you and can afford to have everything done perfect and have to deal with some things that are not 100% proper, welcome to the real world, nobody is perfect.

actually, if you read the posts, people with cai's and fender liners dont seem to have problems, while people with cai's but without fender liners seem to be in trouble.

i'd have the bypass if i had time/money to invest in one and the fender liner I didn't have any control over, long story but it's gone and I haven't wanted to see how much the dealership wants to replace it since until now it hasn't caused any problems.

I got an aftermarket replacement liner for $30 on ebay. Actually tougher then the OEM one. Took all of 30 min. to install and that's only because the wheel needs to come off.

i refuse to work on cars anymore cause i always break something, call it lack of experience, call it lack it training, either way, i don't have anyone around me that knows all the mechanical stuff so i can learn it...........plus these days that's what warrenty is for.
Tommy

ok, including removing the wheel, replacing the fender liner is like 10 bolts. you can figure it out.

Maybe I'm wrong but I'm not sure why this hasn't been said already, your engine may still be ****ed. I've read posts of guys that got water in their engine, changed the oil twice in following few days and then 2 or 3 weeks later they threw a rod through the block. no?

haha good point ... who said anything about money besides the 20 dollars i mentioned which is the cost of the bypass ... you cant afford 20 dollars? i dont pay for anyone to install parts in my car, i do it myself and with my pops no one else. so i dont spend money on people installing parts ...

well i'm glad your pops has time for you and can help you, meanwhile i have nobody physically around me with superior car knowledge to help me........i've changed the tires/rims on my car 100's of times, takes about 30 mins all around with just a jack and a tire iron, -30C is great motivation:rolleyes:

hmmmm.......unless your offering to buy the parts, and come help me install them.....hush up:ssst:

couldn't say, haven't had anykind of let up on the past weeks of rain nor have i had the time to change it myself......if the engine goes it goes....nothin i can do about it now

im talking about my Grandfather ... and he doesnt really help me physically he basically supervises lol so really in the end its all me doing the work. before i started modding my car i had no prior knowledge to cars what so ever, and im still learning. you do a little research, you network with people that are in the same boat as you, ask questions and things will get done, just give it time. im assuming thats why you joined this forum to gain knowledge. im not here to put you or your situation down, my answer to your prior question was the best option besides an SRI. Theres tons of websites that offer all sorts of aftermarket parts for the car, even stock parts for less than what a dealer would charge. you can also learn alot by trial and error as long as the error isnt anything major lol. just take your time and it will all work out

You might want to do a compression test. I thought all was well and fine until my head shattered the next month due to the water cracking the head.

You could still run the CAI. They make shields for it that go around the filter. Also if you have the Fender well you could just block off the grille. Or just run the CAI in the warm dry months and then use the SRI in the winter so it stays somewhat clean. BOB

Nobody is really listening so I'm gunna say this and ask a Mod to just lock this tread......I DO NOT HAVE TIME TO WORK ON MY CAR, thus why I don't have a fender liner yet nor a bypass filter nor a water/heat shield. When I bought the CAI my life was no where near as busy, now, I'm always pressed for time 24/7 and it sucks but the money is keepin me afloat, do wat you gotta do right?? I appreciate all the suggestions but I don't have a grandfather to watch over and give me advise, i'm on my own and every time I've done something on my own I've broken something else......call it bad luck but it's made me decide that I don't want to make time for working on my cars anymore, mechanic shops an dealerships sellings cars with warrenty is wat works for me.
