View Full Version : [XD] Toyota TRD exhaust??

would it be blasphemous to put a toyoduh product on my xd? we had a scion Xd on the lot with the TRD sport muffler and exhaust tip (may have been a full cat back???) and for a 1.8L engine it sounded very deep and throaty, the sound im going for on the XD (hyundai type). since i get toyota parts for only 10% over what the dealership pays for parts im thinking about getting it. better than what evofusion wants for their catback (not outrageously expensive, but more than i have right now...)

two questions, one about functionality and one "other"
would the .2L difference in engine size make a difference in the exhaust note?

also (learning time for me) would auto vs manual trans make a difference in the exhaust note? the scion was manual and my xd is autotragic.

and two, would it be weird/odd/wrong to have a TRD muffler/tip on a hyundai?

As long as it doesn't say TRD or Toyota anywhere that you could read it then I doesn't think it matters.

As for the other questions, someone else will have to address those.

the owner of elantraclub.com has a borla on his hatch. borla is known for muscle cars and here it is on an import... i dont think a trd muffler would be that bad as long as there are no stickers or anything showing the point.

Put the TRD muffler on and then put a NISMO sticker on your hood like one of the Elantras in the KDM thread. Ha Ha just kidding man. I think it would be a little different to see TRD on the muffler but I know what that muffler looks like and I do like it. I doubt the .2L difference will make much sound change probably not that noticeable anyway. Some people will disagree but I do think exhausts on autos sound different than manuals. I think manuals sound better because I've never liked the way an auto with an exhaust sounds when it changes gears. At the end of the day man it's your car and if youre ok with TRD being on your muffler then theres your answer.

Hey, a lot of us put CAI designed for Hondas on our cars. Why not a muffler?

I think the difference in sound would be more closely related to the length of exhaust pipe, exhaust header design, resonators and exhaust valve timing and overlap than transmission type or difference in displacement.

the tip has the TRD logot etched in on the top surface. not sure about the muffler. i was planning on going with a straight cut circular aftermarket tip vs. the rolled lip oval tip of the TRD.

Borla is what im going for with my Z :D

I would doubt that the pipes and hangers designed to fit on a Scion Xd will be the right shape and configuration to fit on an Elantra, though. Although you get a discount, I think you'll be offsetting that to have whatever you purchase modified to fit an Elantra.

i was just thinking of going for the muffler. i know a full catback kit would not fit in any parallel or non-parallel universe. the scion is way too short!

would longer pipes on the hyundai dictate a lower exhaust note? it makes sense to, but i've been surprised before!

I realized after posting that stuff about the catback that you were only talking about the muffler, which is why I edited it after you quoted it.

I'm not sure what effects the length of the pipe would have on the exhaust note -- I think it might have more to do with the curves and resonators in the pipe than with just the diameter and length of the exhaust. It's not a pipe organ where you've got a straight tube of a given diameter and length with a fixed air velocity passing through it. I think it's all probably a matter of trial and error.

Most people with either an aftermarket muffler and / or catback have been reasonably happy with the sound of their exhausts. Unless you put a header on your car (which can make the exhaust reportedly louder and buzzy) you probably will be content with the muffler.

every engine has a distinct sound. those engines sound different with the different mufflers. So to answer your question, will it sound that much different than the toyota, yes it will.

2x the above...........take the toyota supra or aristo with the 2JZ engine.....you will NEVER duplicate that sound on any other engine

go here: http://www.magnaflow.com/04sound/04sport.asp and you can hear the different engines with the magnaflow muff on it. Even the RSX I4 base engine sounds different than the RSX Type R engine.

ugh.. that 350z with the 3" exhaust gives me wood.

I was thinking of doing the Mag street flow muff. Its basically a glass pack. I would like to hear the sound of that scion or even the Hyundai if you do it. I like the throaty deep sound but hate the Quief sound on the way down on revs.

I dunno.......that RS4 sounds pretty sweet

Are you going to get the tubing bent so it will fit?

As for exhaust note, yes engines are all different, auto and manuals put different strains on the engine, so it would sound different mainly because of revs higher/lower at different time intervals.

However although theoretically it will change the sound and can be proven with "very" sensitive sound equipment, as for the human ear... you won't notice that much difference.

this is when i just had the muffler installed, i now have 2.5" mandrel bent piping from the cat back with no resonator. i should post a video of it, but im too lazy:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=sn2iM24ywdE

this setup has been on the car for about a year, and if it weren't close to $1k shipped for headers/cat i would get them. not to mention install is a pita for this car. just changing the plugs pissed me off when i did them 2 years ago.

just to let you know, i have the 3400 v6 and CAI. thats about it performance wise, everything else is audio/cosmetic. full garage is up on elantraclub.com if you want to check that out.

depending on how much the employee price is for the muffler i might just go ahead and give it a shot for "****s and giggles."

first i gotta spend a bit of time/money on getting both the Z32 and XD in tip top running condition (XD needs noew tires and a drop, Z needs foglight, fron fascia, corners, and tbl).

how's the XD sound without resonators? in cali we cant mess with headers if there is a cat on there like the XD/XD2. i'm hoping to make the car a bit louder but not ricey. if i like the TRD muff i might just go with a mandrel bent custom 2.25'' or 2.5'' cat back, as expensive as that might be. I love it when a car sounds good, and will pay more (but not extreme) amounts of money for it to sound that way. thats why im gonna spend so much on borla exhausts for the Z. :D

the TRD muff on the scion xd sounded very similar to the tC muff on this site, but the xd was a tiny bit lower in pitch.

For optimal exhaust flow you want mandrel bent anyway. The non mandrel bent stuff makes the pipe inside diameter smaller at all the bends. So your 2.5" pipe becomes 2.25 at each bend. I know about those cali laws. Ugh.. You really cant mess with anything.. You can change stuff from the cat back but they even have laws about the exhaust dB level. Sigh. That's why I have a 67 mustang. Bought it when I lived in Cali. Since it was exempt from smog laws I could do whatever I wanted with it. I had glass packs on it but that drew waaaaay too much attention so I switched to flowmasters.

Yup yup, me too. Went to orlando a few years back and if it weren't for the amusement parks, I'd never go back. I dunno what it's like to live in an armpit, but I imagine it's pretty close to orlando. Bleh.

found a price of $366 and change for the TRD sport muff for the scion. that means my price is probably going to be in the $200 range as my prices is 10% over what the parts department could get it for.
