I may have missed this when looking through the forums, but does anyone know what the diameter is for a 2003 Elantra GT muffler? I am looking at replacing the stock muffler

Stick diameter is in the neighborhood of 1 7/8". Most autoparts stores sell adapters to make anysize fit. I've used 2.5" and 2.25" on the stock pipe.

thanks for the quick response....any ideas of some good ones to get? I am looking for something that will give me good gas mileage as well as sound good
decide your budget first, that will limit what brands you have to chose from.

no idea what my budget is as I am not sure what the average cost for these are...like I am not wanting to spend a fortune on it, but I will spend the extra money if it is worth it
well, you can probably pick up a flowmaster/magnaflow/something like that for around $75 then install yourself.
A catback will run in the neighborhood of $300 install yourself (easy)
A POS Flowtech from Kragen is about $40 (install yourself)
Take it to somebody my guess is about $150

to be honest I do not know that much about cars in the mechanic point of view, I guess you can say I am a bit of a noob when it comes to this. I know some things, but not a whole lot...lol, I am looking for just the muffler
ok, if you're doing just a muffler, you'll have to cut the old one off with a hack saw/sawzall/torch. Then put the new one on with clamps and some sort of make shift hanger. (the muffler hangs from a hanger right above it). The cat backs are a direct bolt on no monkeying around with adapters, or hand made crap, just take 4 nuts off the old one, pull it out, put the new one in (two nuts up front, 4 bolts+4nuts out back) easy, about 30 minutes if you take your time.
or go to midas and have them slap a flow master on and be done with it.

alright well I am having a friend do all this for me as he is a bit of a mechanic so I am not too worried about it being put on. I appreciate the help 03GT. What are some good mufflers for around $50?
hmm.. around that price..? um.. yeah. cant think of any. I'd go with one of the following brands: magnaflow, flowmaster, borla or gibson. Those are ones I have experience with and have been pleased with. They'll cost a little more but better than getting a POS and being unhappy with it and end up replacing the thing.

If you only want to spend around $50, I suggest checking out ebay for a knockoff.

Oh ok....what about Cherry Bomb? My buddy said he can pick up one for me for like $25. He says its cheap, and it does the job...like I said before I am looking to help with gas mileage but not wanting to spend a lot....any thoughts?
yeah, there's some flowtechs on ebay for $25 +free shipping. They're proably junk though.
There's some OBX for $40 but I've got no experience with them.

Are they making something other than glasspacks? If it's a glasspack you don't want it. The cops will be all over like flies on poop. Glasspacks are loud and they fwap fwap fwap when you let off the gas.
not sure if this galant is a v6 or an 4cyl but here's an example of what they sound like:

I think I will end up getting the Cherry bomb just because of the price, and if it is too loud I can always put on a silencer. I don't think that there are problems here with the noise of mufflers right now. I live just outside of Toronto in Canada. I know in other provinces here they are banned but I have never heard of anything like that here. I am not sure where you are from but maybe they are banned there or something like that.

Well, just remember: You get what you pay for.
^^^ X2
no dB limits on mufflers (that I know of) where I live.
I like glasspacks on V8 cars but on anything less than a V8 they sound horrible. (to me)

Spend the extra for a Borla ProXS it will last, sound good, and make you happy. If its gonna be a couple of weeks then save up some cash for it.

I seem to remember reading somewhere the borlas deliver extra hp and torq at low rpms too. Which is always good. :)

I don't think they are banned, but you will get ticket for loud noise. My buddy got one and I don't think it was cheap.

I am actually getting the Cherry Bomb Turbo muffler from my buddy in a couple weeks and we are going to install it ourselves.
Where I live there are lots of people around here with loud mufflers and I have never heard of anyone getting a ticket, but if it is too loud then I will def get a silencer.

What about the Dynomax Superturbo? It runs about $50 and many people who have gotten it have said its a good value for the money.

even in Oshawa I have heard loud fart cans and that never heard of any problems, I have lots of friends out that way, never heard of anything so far....maybe it is just the police there. I live in Ajax, and no problem. I am not too worried about the noise, I don't want a really loud one anyways
