View Full Version : Fail at car mechanic

So we all know that the supercharged engines need the intake bypass valve so they work in reverse. Otherwise the supercharger would just suck all the air out of the cylinder. So knowing that, how does the turbocharged version work in reverse? The engine is trying to suck air backwards, yet the turbo wants to spin forward so I don't see how it works. Is there some sort of exhausting intake bypass valve on the turbo version? Also, if it does have the valve, does that also mean that it can make boost in reverse? Like how much boost? Like 5 psi or does it go over 20?
Can anyone help me sort this out?

wait, so you're trying to say the motor doesn't reverse directions in reverse? wtf, i thought that's why it was horizontally opposed!

I have a sled that does that. When you push the reverse button the whole sled stops and spins in reverse. Quite interesting actually.

Probably one of the dumbest things I've heard/read relating to working on cars!

This is probably my favorite.
This would only happen in old cars. Newer cars compensate for this fact by having a large servo that flips the engine upside down so it continues to run the same direction while propelling you backwards.
The only downside is turning that large rotational mass will shift your car around. This effect is called: "four cylinder thrash".
It's important to note, that while the engines of old couldn't turn over like they do now; the benefit of the old setup was that the reverse combustion cooled the engine down. Though it would save on gas mileage. This change is the chief reason that while technology has gotten better, gas mileage has not. (Stupid congress, legislating that all engines flip)
Although, were you to race in reverse like you said, you could definately over freeze your engine. So be careful.

What Pete said. And some Mustang guy apparently was saying it was. I didn't read the entire thread, just a fast skim of it so I don't know what the final outcome was. Anyway, I'm glad someone pulled out the kid-in-the-back-seat-of-an-Accent-while-there-are-people-in-the-front-seat-having-sex picture. That's a good one.

quick question, if the engine is in the rear that makes the car rear wheel drive and if its in the front that makes it fron wheel drive?
Pete03GLS
06-29-2008, 12:51 AM
engine placement doesnt usually mean fwd or rwd. alot of car can be front engine rear drive, like a honda s2000, miata, whatever. and altho im sure why anyone would make a rear engine front drive car, most rear engine cars, are also rear drive.

so then why is my 83 malibu wagon with a 383 V8 rear wheel drive but the engine is in front just like my elantra but my elantra is front wheel drive?
so congress is legislating our fliipant engines! no way:D

no ****! the turbo charged version uses the INTAKE air to pressurize the EXHAUST so the car can go reverse! everyone and their 6 legged horses knows that!

I believe that guy is posting that topic to say look how dumb caviler drivers are. They keep posting, dude look at what people are saying about you. And he just continues on with the sarcasim and stupid comments about the engine and hardly any over there realize hes messing with them, its plain as day that he is messing with them. He just wants them to realize it for themselves.
nice engine judy, mine never had the ball on the a/c & heat, just the smog. Engine look good, but it looks so good its making bad spots on the engine bay stick out. Like the rust on the master cylinder, but I'm sure you'll get to that, I will be a beauty when you get done.
