View Full Version : Best all season tires for stock alloys?

My tires are nearly done for and I'll probably need to get some new ones before the end of summer.
Besides the stock Michelin's which can cost a bit too much, does anyone have suggestions for the best all season tires? I don't need any type of performance tires, just some regulars.
Thanks in advance guys.

Kumho KH16. Or, I am about to try the new LX Platinum. Treadwear rating of 600.

I've really been liking the Falken ZE-912s I have. I have them in both OEM size (for my steelies) and 205/45/17 for my summer wheels. They did alright in the winter. Not a snow tire, by any means, but I never had a problem. Wet and dry weather have been good too. Decently quite as well.
I'm not sure how they stack up against the KH16.

I have sneaky suspicion the KH16's will last longer (mileage).

You could get the tires siped to help with the winter traction. I ran the factory michelins siped for 2 winters and they worked pretty well. Still not as good as studed snow tires but they were better than non-siped michelins.

My friend and myself have Goodyear Assurance Tripletred on our 04GT's.
They work great in wet weather and up here in Canada snow was not a problem.
They cost $89 each at Sears in Manassas (they had to order them in - took about 3 days) and I had them do alignment and balance at the same time. Now I can get free rotation and balance for the life of the tires. I think that alignment is free as well but may be wrong on that count. I will find out in November when I am down there again.

I've read good things about the tripletreds too.
If you want a TRUE 4-season tire, I recommend Nokians... I'm running the WR2 AWPs right now, but they also have a new non-directional tire... Treadwear is in between winters and all-seasons.

i got a set of Yokohama 510 from Discount tire. So far they seem decent but they havent been through the deep snow yet just some light stuff but they've done the job fine. I've only gotten about 7k miles on them now.

Take a look at the Dunlop SP60s. At Tire Rack they get similar ratings to the GY and Mich triple treads, at a better price.
I had a set, and they were better in the snow than the winter Bridgestone REVO1s I had. We had a wicked winter, they had no problem going through anything. They also did well in the wet and on the highway.
Good price, good tire that nobody's heard of.

I've so far had good experience with the falken 912's in dry and heavy rain. But I've also heard good results from the khumo's and tripletreads.

I'm throwing my vote in for hte falken ze-912s. I have them on my car and I love them.
Bridgestone Potenza RE960 AS, rated best tire in UHP AS class on Tire Rack... have them on my Sunfire for the past 25k miles, more than ¾ of the tread left, grip very well in wet or dry, and no balance/shaking issues to date. They cost a little more, but less than the Michelins, and last A LOT longer.

Hey long time no see everyone. I still love my V4s Yokohamas. If I had to do it all over again, I would have just went with the same tire, but in the stock size - a lower speed rated H4s. I went straight from stock Michelin to a 205/55 V4s. The grip is awesome, but now with gas prices going up, that 205 means greater rolling resistance, and the smaller diameter means higher engine RPM's for the same speed. I have 25K on them and not even half the tread gone *not* taking it easy. So as much as I want to go back to stock size, I cannot give up these tires because they have been so good, and they have a long way to go. Its the first tire on a small car I have felt confident in really wet weather. Unfortunately, cannot comment on them in snow. Performance usually means low tread warranty, but not with these.

500AA rating, 60K warranty.
The other, which I am looking to put on our 2006 Sedona, but will have to take a slightly narrower tire (maybe a good thing):

700AB rating, 80K warranty.
Both are the same price, and reasonable when compared to the OEM Michelins. I suspect the 80K might be a stretch, but with regular rotations, and taking it easy, you maybe surprised.
And to throw in a more "regular" tire:

620AB rating, 80K warranty, slightly cheaper than above.

^ H4's in our experience are noiser than they're competitors and being directional chop up pretty easy. Also keep in mind, "H" rated and higher are what the manufacturer (car, not tire) recommends for the Elantra. 88H.

Welcome back Doc!
Thanks guys, I was hoping there would be a consensus on this, but apparently not.

I just got in a new set of the Kumho PLatinum LX. I decided that is the tire I replace my KH16's with. Tire has nice large grooves for water, smaller tread blocks for quiet ride, nice shoulders for cornering and siping on the inside for winter traction. Tire looks MUCH better than the picture in person. with a treadwear of 600 it's hard to go wrong IMO.

tires are more of a preference thing than an x is better than y because type of thing, because even if a tire has better ratings and whatnot, personal experience varies like with anything else. plus there are so many brands that not everyone has tried every brand :)
i had falken 512s (912) on my 16 inch wheel son my cav, and they were iffy sometimes in the snow. they were not bad, but the stocks were definitely better

I have the falkens also and so far so good. I have not had them in the snow yet, but as far as wet handling they kick butt compared to the stock tires.

Wow, incredible price. What size?
From my Tire Rack research and on the road experience, my choices are:
Dunlop SP60
Continental ContiExtremeContact
General Altimax HP
General Altimax RT
I'll have to check out treadepot. Thanks for the tip.

Goodyear Eagle RS-A ... over 50K on them and still lots of tread. Well controlled limits, so you know when they're going to let loose. Little loud on concrete, but nothing a good stereo can't handle. Snow ... no problem ... more problems with snow plowing the front lip then anything else

I also recommend nokians. I'm running the WR G2, by far the best tire I've every used so far. they've preformed excellent in every condition so far.
