View Full Version : [XD] G/I : 2002 Elantra GLS - $4,000 OBO

Since I got denied for a loan to buy a used Sonata, I'm going to try and get financed for an '09. If this is route I take, I don't want two car payments and the Elantra must go.
I really really don't want to get rid of this car, just because there's so much I haven't done yet. But, if it has to go, it's not going to be used as a trade in, for a few major reasons:
• Dealer will NOT give me what the car is worth, because they never do
• Car looks like crap (minor body damage)
• They won't appreciate all the work that was put into this car
If I sell it to one of you guys, at least you would be able to either swap a newer engine into it and boost it, or fix the minor body damage and do what you want with it.
Let me clarify this, in bold letters, since Pete always seems to miss this:
I AM NOT PARTING OUT ANYTHING! IF I SELL IT, IT COMES AS-IS, EXCEPT FOR THE STEREO/XM RADIO/SUBS.
Here's the information:
• 2002 Hyundai Elantra GLS
• 133,278 miles (as of 08/18/08)
• VIN : KMHDN45D12U378356
• Mod list and Pictures (http://www.elantraxd.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24937)
• Owned by me since 06/07/05 @ 67,220 miles; former owner was a Pastor
• All maintenance done within 1,000 miles, except for timing belt change at 120K miles. This needs to be done SOON. (Maybe even before sale, will update if this changes.)
• Oil changed every 3-4K miles, only gone up to 5K about twice due to lack of funds.
• Both cv axles replaced about 10,000 miles ago. (05/17/08)
• Cruise Control
• Keyless Entry
Here's the things that need fixed/replaced: - I will update with pictures of each description soon.
• Hood
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b114/MunkyMofo/after.gif?t=1219101623
• Driver's side fender (I have a replacement fender, needs painted.)
http://crookedh.com/munky/XD/102_0285.jpg
• Passenger's side fender :
http://crookedh.com/munky/XD/102_0286.jpg
• Trunk (9 holes from 2 seperate spoilers)
http://crookedh.com/munky/XD/102_0288.jpg
• Core support (SLIGHTLY warped, still fits fine, still holds radiator/condenser.)
• Angel eyes no longer work..they burnt out within a month. Chris said he would send a repair kit on two separate occasions, with no luck)
• Projector fogs (Both bulbs blew out within 2 months of replacing. I didn't care enough to rip them out and rewire them.)
• Wheels (Enkei DM-5's with some pretty heavy curb rash from nasty potholes during the winter months. 2 are slightly bent. All hold air just fine. I also have 4 steelies that can be thrown on as well.)
http://crookedh.com/munky/XD/102_0279.jpg
http://crookedh.com/munky/XD/102_0282.jpg
• Synchros (I'm a victim of the infamous 2nd gear grind. Transmission still shifts just fine, but you have to hesitate before shifting into second or it will give a slight grind. Redline MT-90 made it better, but you can still hear it.)
That's all I can think of at the moment. Other than that the car is mechanically sound. It's given me 66,000 miles with no issues, and it still runs me to/from work every day.
I will be willing to drive halfway to deliver the car if the trip isn't TOO bad..but that will have to be handled on a case-by case basis. I'm located in Noblesville, Indiana. (46060)
Any questions, just post up and ask.

Good luck with this Cory, I hope you do well, any pics of the body damage? If I had some spare cash, I'd pick it up, but we're thinking of moving so that's putting a LOT of things on hold for awhile.

I also want to add that I just bought 4 new Kumho Ecsta AST's a week and a half ago, and these will also come with the car:

The muffler was damaged last Friday when my girlfriend hit it with the bumper of the BMW when it was up on jackstands. I will replace this myself.

I have two extra XD headlights and 2 x Acura TSX Projectors for a retrofit. These will ALSO come with the car.

Actually, that would help. We're supposed to have another central Indiana meet sometime soon, maybe we can do it then. If not, we can do a bonfire at your place or something and knock it out.
Thanks Bob.

Sweet, thanks Dave. If i'm not online, you can e-mail (mailto:cory.thielen@gmail.com) me. I'll get it on my phone.
Please keep in mind it will only be sold if/when I get approved to buy a new Sonata. Until then, it will be used as my DD. It may be a few months, but whoever is seriously interested will have their dibs.

I forgot to mention one very important thing; The clutch will need replaced soon as well. It still grips strong, hasn't slipped on me once...but the pedal is traveling higher and higher and it's only a matter of time.
Last time I had the clutch changed (9/23/07) we didn't replace or resurface the flywheel (lack of funds) and it ate through this clutch a lot faster than expected.

It looks like the gaps are more of a frame issue than a core or body panel issues. I suspect all three, however don't let the word "frame" scare you the frame is actually easier to fix than core support. Pretty sure a skilled frame shop could get these lines perfect if not close enough to look factory for $100-200 without replacing any structural parts.
I truly don't think that damage is that bad, looks like an easy fix, just find someone with experience and won't screw you.
Very good starter car for someone. Do let that minor damage scare anyone away, there is valuable learning experiences in that damage.

So I'm assuming you just replaced some of the more damaged parts?
Yep. The condenser got punctured, and it was the middle of summer, so I replaced that. ($350 :() Also bought a new headlight + grill. Everything else I took off and bent to fit better. I spent 2 weeks getting the hood back to a position where it would latch, that was a pain. I have absolutely no experience with bodywork, so I was pretty proud.

No air bag deployment, the engine didn't even die. The only thing it affected mechanically was puncturing the condenser and killing my air conditioning, and the hood sensor for the alarm (because the hood was bent and couldn't reach it.)

Out of curiousity, how come you're selling it to buy a new car? You mentioned being declined for a loan for a used car, so is selling a car that (I assume) is paid off to get a new debt a good idea? Wouldn't it be cheaper to fix the XD?

I don't want to put the time/work into the XD right now, to be honest. I love the car, and I planned on keeping it as long as possible, but a few things stopped me:
• I don't want to drive this car through another winter
• I HATE driving a 5-speed through rush hour to/from work.
• The XD attracts a lot of unwanted attention
Yes, I knew that modding my car would attract attention, but I'm really starting to get sick of cops profiling me just because I drive a car that's lowered with rims, tint, and exhaust. I just want a nice quiet ride, I'm done with toy cars for now.

Yeah, as I know 1sthand (thanks Cypher ;))...
To be honest though Munky, I think your plans for a Sonata may be ill-advised. Not only would you have to turn your back on the best Hyundai Forum on the web, (shameless) you'd be driving a modern-day boat. As I thought about your options (slow day @ work), I kept returning to the HD. For 15-17k you can have a brand new car, and the future possibility of mods that you can discuss RIGHT HERE, not on some second-rate posting board .
I'm assuming you're staying Hyundai for the same reasons I will be... reliability, low cost and great warranty. Have you looked into the difference in insurance for the Sonata? Even if you say "**** mileage, i want a bigger car" like I do, I always come back to practicality. The HD is easier to park, easier to drive "like you stole it" as I sometimes, well, often times, do.
Since you want to stay near stock, I won't mention the aftermarket support the HD has, or the potential the engine has. I'm NOT trying to dissuade you from doing what you want, as I don't know you personally. Xbox Live friends notwithstanding, I don't know your personal taste, driving style or lack thereof ;). Therefore I won't go on any longer.
Just consider it, and if you already have, and dismissed it outright, I'm not sorry I wasted your time, jerk.

I considered the HD for about 5 minutes before I realized how much I hate the look of them. Yes, it would be more practical, and a bit cheaper, but I just like the new Sonatas more.
And I don't care if it's a bit of a "boat"..it still handled beautifully when I test drove one.
Well... okay, but I don't wanna hear "I can't afford XBL 'cause my overpriced Sonata cost too much." I need to be able to embarrass you from time to time.

plus, the interior of the two are nowhere near in comparison. The Sonata has a much more clean-cut, luxurious look to it.

As somebody who moved from an Elantra (01 5 speed, base model) to a Sonata, I can tell you I would never go back to an Elantra. It was a good car but the Sonata is so much more for not that much more money. Hell a base Sonata is one of the best deals going right now. I moved up to a mid-level GLS Sonata but went with the V6. The power is amazing. It would make driving an Elantra seem like a slug in comparison. Good luck selling your Elantra. I don't think you'll regret getting a Sonata at all!

Since I got denied for a loan to buy a used Sonata, I'm going to try and get financed for an '09. .
If you got denied a (auto or personal?) loan for a used Sonata, wont your finance rate be ridiculous for a new one?
Why not finance a used Sonata, instead of a new one?
How much do you owe on your XD?

Because, I already tried to finance for a used Sonata, but I was told by the lady at the bank and a few other people that it's a lot easier to get financed for a new car than a used one, especially if you go into the dealership when they're having one of their "one time only" events.
I owe a little over 3 grand on the XD, and there's a possibility that I would be fine with two car payments, but I don't want to get myself into that position.
I'm just getting tired of the XD and I want something nicer. I'm sick of driving a stick-shift in rush hour traffic, especially when I'm half-asleep in the morning. The Sonata is the nicest car for the value and it has everything I'm looking for. That..and I hate driving the Elantra in the winter.
ArunSenior04
08-21-2008, 09:44 PM
True, but typically a dealer financed rate is higher than a private loaner (ie bank) rate. Alot of dealers can get you into any car, but that interest/time will be crazy. Not to mention that the rate provided is not competitive to any private rate. (For ex. My dealer wanted 8%, I got 5% from BOA on my 5 year)
Special "one-time, low interest" specials are reserved for those with excellent credit history. If you are being denied for a $13-14K loan, you are probably not eligible for these "specials."

New cars have more value to a bank than a used one. Used ones are already depreciated, never selling for anywhere near their real value, and have a better chance of having something go wrong with it and the loan being defaulted because some people can't afford a huge repair bill on top of their car payment. There are some dealers though, that even if you can't get into a used car, they can still get you into a new one at a good rate. There's a Mitsu dealer here, that my friend got denied on a used car, but they were able to get him approved at 9.9% for a new one, that's not that bad in the grand scheme of things.
ArunSenior04

I guess your right, even though 10% is kinda high.
I dunno. Munky, you are still a young guy. Why not keep what you have, pay it off and save, until you're in a better position to purchase a $20K (17-18K with interest) car. According to your list, there is nothing mechanically wrong with the car. I dont know your finances, but unless you live on your own, are out of school, and make good money/job security, I dont really see the justification in buying a new car, based on your reasons.
Just my .02 cents.
I mean no offense, but the price sounds a bit high. A year ago I sold my 02 GT 5-dr 5-spd with ABS, sunroof, 90k miles, current on all maintenance and no body damage for around that price... took a couple months at that too.
I understand wanting to drive an automatic in rush-hour... much easier on the clutch creeping up with the rest of the crowd.
I'm sure plenty of AT Elantra owners here may prefer a stick... have you considered trading with another member for an automatic Elantra? By doing so, you'd also keep your overall debt smaller.
cbogg
08-22-2008, 10:14 PM
Yeah, but how modded was yours? You might think it's high, granted it's not in mint shape, but it has had a LOT of work done to it, and would be great at that price for someone.
Yeah, but how modded was yours? You might think it's high, granted it's not in mint shape, but it has had a LOT of work done to it, and would be great at that price for someone.
Mods are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them, and usually are done to the current owner's preference (which may not be the potential buyer's). That being said, do the mods to the car exceed the cost of replacing & painting the fenders/hood/decklid, replacing the curb-rashed wheels/worn-out clutch/timing belt? Mine also had 40k less miles, was a GT with a lot more options. It didn't need any maintenance or repairs (a much bigger factor in buying a car than mods IMO). Around here in much better shape they aren't going for that much. modded 02 GLS - Raleigh Craigslist - $3000 (http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/806737335.html) That being said, I do think it's too much.
Are there bad marks in your credit history? Since you've got an existing loan on your current car, it's odd that you can't get financed on another used one unless your debt to income ratio is stretched thin.
I was suggesting a trade with another member with an automatic that would prefer a stick as a compromise between "want" for a different car and "need" for an automatic. Doing so you could even keep some of the mods and swap them to the other car, continue enjoying some of the hard work you've put into it. The shorter loan duration and avoiding the immediate depreciation of a new Sonata would be a positive financial step.

You really should try and wait till your car is paid off. Otherwise you'll just have to roll that debt into the new car. Honestly, next time around I'll probably be looking at a 1-2 year old Genesis in comparison to a new Sonata. Hyundais depreciate so much I think that would really be the sweet spot for bang for the buck.
Munky
08-23-2008, 10:19 AM
I appreciate all the advice guys, but I know what I want to do, and my income allows it with no problems. Unlike some people, I did my homework before making this decision.
And as for the price, I think it's perfectly fair.
'02 GLS with my miles and options ranges anywhere from 2800-3500, depending on the websites I checked.
Then lets add everything I am including with the car:
2 week old set of tires = $451
2 spare headlights = ~$100-$150
2 Acura TSX Projectors for a retrofit = $100
Triple gauge pod A-pillar = $160
Three Prosport performance gauges = $130-ish
Then there's all the mods I bought and are already in the car, easily amounting to at least $500 bucks, if not more.
And yes, there is existing damage, and I said that loud and clear. I even have one fender already bought to replace the driver's side ($105) which I am also including.

Throw the car up on E-bay and see what happens. That's really your best bet on finding a buyer who will appreciate your mods. As was stated before, they are only worth what one is willing to pay. Most of the time a stock car will sell for as much if not more than a modified one because people are leary of how a mod car was treated. The damage is definitely going to negatively impact the value. You'd be better off trying to get it fixed first.

How do you figure he'd do better on Ebay then selling it on here, where modding is a way of life? I think he'd do better on here, where we all appreciate the amount of work that went into it, and realize that time is money too.

I dont think that if you already had a decently modded elantra, you'd want another, right?

That's exactly why this is the only place I've posted it up.
If I do get rid of it, I would want to sell it to one of you guys, so you would be able to do something with the car, the parts, whatever.

I talked to a few financial advisors over the weekend and I was told that the way the economy is right now, most banks aren't giving out loans to people with a credit score of 700 or lower.
Looks like this is going to have to wait :(
Save up for a genesis then?

No, the Genesis is still a bit out of my price range. Besides, I'm pretty set on a new Sonata. Everything I need, nothing I don't.

Odd.
My credit score isnt that high, and I was able to get an auto loan for $15K at 5.6%, over 5 years, just 2 months ago.

Well, I'm not giving up just yet. I just have a feeling it might not be as easy as I thought, and it's gonna take a while.
There's a possibility my girlfriend will take over the payments if there's not enough interest to sell as-is, and if so, I can slowly part out the car since she won't need the mods. Keep in mind, if this happens the Elantra will be her DD and I won't be able to have any downtime to swap parts.
But...either way, you guys will benefit.

Alright, I can't get the new car without closing out the loan on this one. So I have two choices: Sell it or trade it in.
I want to get rid of it ASAP because I don't have to worry about keeping a car for the g/f, so I'm giving you guys a deal.
I owe $2,831.35 as of right now, by the time I sell it I'll have made another payment.
So, I'll let it go as-is* to you guys for $2,500 even. Delivery will be a bit more, depending on how far it's going.
If there's not enough interest, I'll start parting it out and selling the parts, then I'll trade it in.
The bank still owns it, so I don't know the best way to do this. I won't be able to give you the title day of sale, obviously. I'll have to mail it out once I get it. But I won't rip any of you guys off, hopefully you don't think I would either.
Post up here, pm me, or e-mail (mailto:cory.thielen@gmail.com) me.
*I'll be keeping the subs + the stereo, as well as my custom mission plate and license plate. I'm also selling the spare headlights/projectors seperately.

Do you have full coverage on the Grand am? I can make a trip to Va if you wanna get rid of it ;)
Cory Good luck with the sale.
BTW do you still have that extra set of XD headlights? Wanna sell em?

No, no payments. The car needs to go asap, my goal is to get the new car before winter. I was going to just trade it in, but I figured I would give you guys a shot to snatch it up before a dealer does.

the more i look at this elantra the more i wouldnt mind getting back into one, and once my maverick sells ill have some cash to toss around.
that being said, i think my dad might come and smother me in my sleep for selling my elantra for the maverick, then selling the maverick and buying another elantra.
then again mine wasnt a 5-speed nor did it have as many sweet mods as yours..
you sir have just given me inspiration to get my mav sold!
Munky -
Dunno if you've tried a credit union yet but you might give them a shot. Also, if it were me... I'd hold out for the genesis coupe. That's what I'm doing now, hang on to the XD for a few more years then pick up a Genesis when the XD is just too tired to go again.
We just got a loan on our van at 4.5% with $1k down for 60 months. Do not trade in if you don't have to. Our credit score is in the 760's, but they even gave us crap about the debit to income ratio being too high. Pretty lame considering how much $$ we have in the savings account (more than double the price of the van). But with all the defunct loans these days I'm not surprised.

9" neon tubes under the footwell plugged into a 4-way cigarette lighter adapter, wired to an independent switch.

Only a few items, things that don't need a replacement or things I already have a replacement for.
I don't have the time or the patience to rip everything out and part it out.

That might be a possibility. I'm going up to the dealer this Saturday, and if they give me a good offer (at least what I owe, if not more) then it might go then and there.
I'll keep you updated.
