Well I ordered my Apex SAFC-2 and Turbo timer today along with my Walbro 255, once I get over to Afghanistan (for those who remember I got home from Bosnia not even a year ago  ) the big part starts, I will have in excess of 12,000 to play with. I tend to get a bit stupid with money when its free, so this turbo project is now underway!! WOOHOO

you should have just ordered the alpine kit and built it up from there... the reason I suggest this is because it is already known to work reliably and lots of people have it.

That is what I am going to buy but I want an external wastegate, and I dont like the fact that there isnt any plumbing for the IC.

the only reason you could want an external wastegate is if you want very precise control of your boost curve...
honestly, with a stock engine, you are wasting your money. Considering that you will be boosing relatively low, you really wont need that setup.
I think that you will be very pleased with the results of the alpine kit "out of the box" with no mods at all...
think about it, the kit by itself gives about 200 whp !!!
thats enough to:
#1. burn the clutch.
#2. burn your tires up on every launch.
#3. overheat your brakes when you slow down from a quick run.
sheesh....

Put that money to good use :) We all can't wait to see your finished product. BTW, how will you be working on your car when you'll be in Afghanistan?

It will be in storage for the 6 months and when I get back I will go to town on it

#1: clutch is gone, I have a Spec stage 4 with a Fidanza Flywheel
#2: oh well
#3: ordering tib brakes and having them crossdrilled and slotted
200WHP is just my start goal, I am lowering compression, and hopefully doing something about conrods and the crank...I would like a little longer rev range.
And while im gone to Afghanistan I know a guy in the local area who owns a machine shop who will do extensive work on my head for me. So stock internals, kind of...
Also im not overly pleased with the way the alpine kit looks under the hood. I know that time and detail will determine the outcome of everything, but you need a good platform to build from. Im not sure the Alpine kit is for me, though its "plug and play" power yeilds are decent enough, im still sceptical.

well, one thing that is very good about the alpine kit is that they provide a heat shield for the manifold... let me tell you, that the heat a turbo manifold makes is much higher than a standard header...
that extra heat under the hood is NOT GOOD...
considering that they went far enough to develop a heat shield with their kit shows that they really have a good product.
Also, their kit has been around for the longest time, which means that every subsequent kit they produce is only better than the previous.

All that is true enough, because a product that stands the test of time is sure to be worth while. I just dont like the way it looks onder the hood

You can always upgrade to a fancy pants manifold later on...oh, I haven't dyno'd since I put the new IM on...I should be right around 250-260WHP though..

I have spoken directly to alpine... they told me that the turbo kit they sell has a fitment problem with the XD... they cant get the intercooler pipes to fit properly... so they sell the kit without the intercooler for 2560. this custom kit will include the charge pipe that goes from the turbo directly to the TB custom made for the elantra for the same price.
now, I asked him about the water/air intercooler and he said he can supply me with that setup for the elantra for $3500. this includes the water/air intercooler + pump + misc parts + charge pipes within that price.
He said he has built this same setup for other elantras and that it works perfectly.....
also, he said the base kit boosts 10 psi.
I think I might order this thing from him today ... maybe... I have to think about it. :) He said that there will be a 3 week lead time for this kit to ship since he does not have the custom water/air intercooler in stock and he will need to custom make it.
The guy I spoke to is named John at the California Alpine facility.

I do want the fancy pants manifold, as for the fittament issue that is such a pain. Though water/air intercooler sounds nice. And that power range sounds good also, for now. I will be sure to keep my eyes open, and please dmdicks let me know how things go with the dyno and all.
