View Full Version : New 17's on the GT

I decided that it was time to upgrade the wheels and tires b/c my tires were going bald from excessive tire burning:diablo: I ordered some Kyowa Racing 17's and I love them. The guys at the tire and rim shop initially tried to get me to buy them in 19's but I knew that was retarded so I went to 18's. Then I read up on this forum that 18's would be a harsher, slower ride with more chance of wheel rub and bent rims so I canceled the 18's and went back to 17's. I really like them but I find that my car is now about an inch or two taller than it was with the stock tires and if I gun it in first gear, the car pulls to one side a bit almost as if I have torque steer(which is definitely not the case for this GT). It doesn't rub and the car handles much better than it did with the stocks. These rims are extremely light too. Anyways, here are some pics. Tell me what you think. Enjoy.

Nice choice my friend, ...... i bought some new tyres for 215/40/17" and had to roll the fenders because of rubbing so im surprised that you dont have any rubbing.....anyway looks good and would look even better with a drop......
it would be nice to see a side view of your rims to its depth.....

Thanks! I'll definitely post up a pic of the depth of the rims. I want to drop my car, but here in Hawaii you have to get what's called a RECON inspection when you modify your car with certain things. If I do lower the car, I'll have to get an alignment and an inspection to be able to pass the RECON test. Oh well, maybe I'll do it anyway.

Good looking wheels. It's funny it does look about an inch taller, I mean the difference between 185/60R15 and 215/45R17 is mathematically 11mm, or less than 1/2". However, because the tires are wider, the bottom doesn't compress as much as the 185's do (wider and shorter contact patch) and you might get a little more height. The thing is, I have the same tire size and it doesn't look that tall... Mine's 5 yrs 88k miles, so maybe just give it a few years ;) Also, mine rubbed the fender when several people were in the rear seat.

Those are def. some nice rims on your lifted elantra. Oh wait..... so yeah, probably time to lower it. It sucks that you have to put it through an inspection if you do it, but when you think about it, it's probably for the best, that way you don't have any wingnut with a neon rolling on some ebay coilovers or cut springs.

Thanks for all the comments guys. :) I love the wheels for sure. I didn't realize that the tires would be so big though. Oh well, I still think it looks sexy. So was 215/45/17 a good choice for tires? If I did drop my car, would my tires rub?

Will those tires rub? That really depends what you do with the car, if you get real cheap no name springs on the stock struts and load 3 people in the back yeah you might rub over some bumps and around corners. But if you get some nice springs, KYB GR2 struts, and a Tiburon GT sway bar you will probably be less likely to get rub under the same circumstances.
For what springs to get, I suggest using the search option. There are many different springs out there and you should probably do some research.
Right now I have 205/40r17 and they are too small for me. I ordered some 215/45r17, I will let you know if they rub or not.

Thanks for the comments guys. I definitely like the rims and tires. I originally wanted to get some black rims and black my car out...but I saw these rims and I knew I had to have them. I do want to lower my car, but it's going to have to wait until I pay these rims off!;)

Actually, they were expensive b/c of the fact that I live in Hawaii and I didn't want to wait to have them shipped if I ordered online. Altogether, it was $1494 for the wheels and tires, mounting and balancing, etc..
On a side note, does anyone else with similar sized tires/wheel feel as though their car is slower? My car feels the same as it did with the stocks, but I read that getting bigger wheels/tires like these can make your car slower.

If I do decide to drop my car, would these B&G springs work fine with my setup? http://www.evofusionusa.com/TeamSR/Hyundai/elantra-springs.html
I don't know how many inches that will drop my car, but I'm going for 2 inches or so. I don't know if my tires will rub or not though and I was wondering if anyone with similar sized wheels/tires(215/45/17) and springs can enlighten me. BTW, I have used the search feature, but I didn't find what I was looking for. I just want to know that the likelihood of me rubbing or anything like that would be, or if I would have to do more than just change to the new springs.
