So last night I had 3 passengers in my car and I rubbed for the first time with my new wheels and tires. I rubbed b/c I took a right hand turn pretty quickly and everyone in the car could hear the rubbing...they said it sounded like I had chains in the back of the car or something. I want to get the H&R lowering springs, but I don't know if I'm going to rub even more once I drop my car. Anyone else with this same tire size combo and springs have any problems or should I just take turns slower when my car has 2 people in the back and a passenger in the front?
I have 215/45/17 Falken tires btw.

Tire size is irrelevant if we don't know the wheel size or the car (hatch or sedan). I rub on one side (about to fix that in 20 minutes) as well. but I am knowingly running +40 offset wheels and 205 tires. You havce a couple options to fix the rubbing. Roll the fender lip (my current solution), add more camber or change the wheels to a better offset.

The wheel size is 17. I don't know about the offset though. Where can I find that out? My car is a 2005 GT hatchback.

no, not the diameter of the wheel, the offset, and width of the wheel.
you might find the specs on the rim manufacture website, or you can measure them.

This is what I was telling you in the PM's. Offset can be crucial to your setup. If you're rubbing not dropped, bringing it down will undoubtedly make it worse if you don't change what needs to be changed first.

i had those same tires before but i never rubbed. i also have my rear alignment set to -1.1 neg camber. so that also helps alot.

Did you have the Falken ZE 912 215/45/17's without rubbing before you did the camber adjustment? If I do have the camber set, how do I actually go about doing that? I'm not mechanically inclined enough to do it, so would a suspension/alignment shop be able to do that? I really want to put on the H&R's b/c they won't lower my car too much, but I figure if I do put on the springs, maybe it won't rub again unless I have a fully loaded car going around a sharp right turn again like last night.
Oh, and according to this http://www.hotrodhanks.com/products/wheels/productID/4798 the offset for my wheel is 42...which seems to be the magic number to prevent rubbing. That was the first time my tires rubbed, but once again, I have 4 people in the car including yours truly, and I made a pretty sharp right turn going a bit fast.

In polite conversation we do not discuss such matters. :headshake

yes, you will need to take your car to an alignment shop and request to have the rear camber set to whatever you need. you can go up to -1.2 and your tire tread will still be safe. im lowered 1.2 inches and -1.1 camber with 215/45/17 Nankang Ns-1 sport tires and have no issues, even with 3 people in the back.

Thanks for the info matrix. Was it expensive to get the camber adjusted?

well, i did it myself at work, so it was free.
but average price for a 4 wheel alignment runs about $100 here in cali.
call some alignment shops around your area and ask for a price and if they can set the neg camber for ya.

If you're going to pay for an alignment, get camber bolts too. I know you can sometimes get enough camber from the stock bolts but YMMV. Some have only been able to get -0.8 or so.
Max spec is -1.4 in the rear and with zero toe, you'll never have to worry about rubbing again.

Ha that's funny I rubbed it last night too when the wife fell asleep too early.
Seriously though, put some 205's on, lower your car, maybe get a little bit of negative camber and there you have it.

I'd love to put some 205's on but I JUST bought these tires. They are brand new and will be on my car for the next 2-3 years. It only rubs with people in the back during hard corners. I never rub my tires any other time, front or rear...maybe I just shouldn't lower my car.

just use it as an excuse not to carry people in the car

So how many people here have the same tire size as me with lowering springs and have no problems with rubbing? I really want to lower the car, but I need more input before I buy the springs.
