Aye what up Fellas! I gotta question about some paint that i bought for my bodykit. Ok well as you already know i bought the EVO 3 bodykit and i went to "CarQuest" ( in killeen TX ) and i bought some half of a quart of DUPANT paint and i wanted to know if that would be enough to paint my whole bodykit because the sales man up their told me that it would be but then when i went to this body shop. They told me that no where near enough.
And for the folks that don't understand...( like me ...lol ) it's a normal can of paint you would buy to like paint the walls in a house but it's half of that...
If anyone could help me out please do...
Thanks!!!

I have painted a whole car with a gallon of topcoat/basecoat and had a lot left......painting your body kit with a half gallon of base (you still need thinner and activator/catylyst) will be good.....you dont need more than that.

He said half quart, not half gallon.
Why aren't you letting the body shop supply the paint so they can blend the color properly?

As a painter, I use at least a gallon of base and another gallon of clear. This is a bit more than most shops use, but I generally keep more material on the finished product.
Most shops shoot 2 coats of base and 3 of clear, which is about a gallon total. They also don't colorsand the product either.
I generally shoot 4 coats, let that dry, block the whole surface, shoot more color on then repeat the blocking until the gallon of paint is used up. I usually have 4-5 coats of color after the final wetsand. After lightly sanding the base I then shoot a gallon of clear then bake that for a couple hours then let it dry for 3 days. After 3 days have elapsed, I colorsand the final finish to remove all imperfections and orange peel. The final product has 4-5 coats of base and about 5 coats of clear. If I am doing any kind of graphics, I generally use more than a gallon of clear to make the surface smooth instead of having an edge at the end of the graphic.

I've always been curious, do you paint cars for a living or is this just something you do on the side? You're always pretty knowledgable about this stuff.

I teach as a profession, but I also own a shop and bodywork is the main thing my portion does. My business partner does performance upgrades. I also have taught Auto Shop at a high school combining cars with my profession. I now facilitate special education programs.
It may appear that it is a hobby, but to do it legally, I have to have a business license plus be ASE certified to comply with the consumer agencies.

ok so tell me this? How much paint would you guys use to JUST paint the front back and sides of a body kit...clear and all?????
Cause like i said i have a normal can of paint just like the cans that you would use to paint a wall in your house. However much that is...i only have half of that in paint. I do have the thinner and the clear and all that other bullschiit but i was curious because some *** at this body shop was telling me..... " ohh no no no, you don't half barely enough to paint a whole bodykit...i use this much and this much of this and that" So i was just curious if he knew what he was talking about or if i didn't buy enough paint so i can go beat the guys *** at " Car Quest" for telling me it would be enough. YOu nahmeen??
Cause if i don't have enough then i need to go buy more before this kit comes in. Oh and about why i didn't bring it to a shop and let them do it. Because the shops around here in Killeen TX are bullschiit. And i trust my homeboy. He goes to school for painting as well. His dad OWNS his own shop so....i'll go with getting the kit put on AND painted for FREE then let some dick at some bodyshop charge me and arm and two legs for nothing. BUT just let me know that info. THANKS! :D

To make the kit look good, and blend with the body of the car, parts of the car also should be cleared. I might use a pint and a half of base and maybe a quart and a half of clear. Keep in mind I colorsand the pieces and I generally shoot more material on.
I also suggest using an epoxy primer as well. It adheres better than a regular primer.
