Speaker adapter to adapt JL Audio splits into a Elantra Elite, same principal for other vehicles and speaker types.

STEP 1

Disassemble your door trims and remove the front speakers.

Disassemble the plastic casing on the speaker itself and remove any protruding bits of plastic. This will make it easier to trace around onto the MDF template we will be using.

STEP 2

Using the plastic housing from the original speaker, trace around the outer edge onto some 6mm thick MDF board.

STEP 3

Using the new speakers template centred in the middle of the traced template of the plastic housing, trace the cutouts for the speaker and screws.

STEP 4

Using a suitable jigsaw, cut out the hole for the new speaker and drill the holes for the screws.

STEP 5

Install one of the new speakers as a test fit to make sure you have a large enough hole for the speaker to sit nicely in the new adapter and that the screw holes line up.

STEP 6

Using your jigsaw once again, cut out the outer edge of the adapter and sand smooth.

STEP 7

Test fit the adapter on the door of the car, making sure it fits nicely and the screws line up.

STEP 8

Lay some 10mm adhesive foam around the back of the mdf to seal around all the edges.

STEP 9

Then lay the same foam around the front of the speaker to stop any rattles from the door trim.

STEP 10

Finally, fit the speaker and adapter into the door screwing in firmly so the foam squashes for a tight fit.

NOTE!

Also, in case you are wondering where I fitted my crossover, there is a little spot just under the armrest!

Thanks all for looking, hope it has helped someone!

What are the odds of someone making one of these adapters and making a template for it and posting it on here? Obviously no need to post the template for the speaker size, just the factory cutout template. I do not own a jig and i wanted to get a template and take it to the woodshop where i work and cut it out here. Then go home and put it in, but i dont want to have to take the doors apart twice or drive around with a loose panel or no panel.. Anybody??

*btw that is an awesome diy :^)

i had this same fun experience when i installed some new speakers up front last fall.

what i did was, i took that plastic piece that you started with, and then just screwed the speaker into it, cutting away any plastic that was in the way with tin snips, and then reinstalled the old bracket into the door with the new speaker contained within

Bam! I did the same thing.

BTW holy thread revival batman! :)

Just as an aside, Rob sold his beautiful ( I saw it up close, clean is a massive understatement ) Elantra in 2005 I think, and bought a turbo XR6 Ford Falcon.

And there is no rattle doing it with just the plastic and no support?^

For future reference, the Infinity Reference speakers I just bought come with an adaptor for 6 3/4" hole... so problem solved...

sorry for the revival, but i have a question, where can i buy some foam like that?
and does it come in that width, or do i have to cut it to the appropriate size? or what?
