Yes, it is crucial. You need to be able to vent the excess boost when off throttle.

Don't forget oil feed and oil return lines, as well as water coolant lines if your turbo happens to be twin cooled.

And a fuel tuner of some kind. The AEM FIC works wonders. There are a few members here that are using it. You can also use the SMT-6 to control fuel.

A boost controller unless you are just going to use the spring rate that is in the internal wastegate.

Spark plugs: I've got something around here somewhere, probably in the F/I Forum that says which NGK plugs to get. You have to run 1 stage colder, otherwise the spark will keep blowing out on you and you won't go anywhere.

That should about cover it. I'll think of some other things and when I do I'll post 'em up for you.

BOV is typically optional but if you plan on higher boost levels I'd get one. The bov vents out the pressure in the piping when the throttle plate slams shut, helping to protect the turbocharger from back spin. It's a crappy flutter sound that you'll hear when it happens.

YOU NEED A GOOD FUEL TUNER. Don't skimp on this or else you WILL be back here saying how your motor is blown.

yes, get either the smt-6 or aem fic, they work as a piggy back so you dont need a new ecu. just have a shop dyno tune it for you so it is done right.

ok great. so i have everything axcept the blow off and a fuel tuner. so this fuel tuner is going to compinsate for the computers lack of fuel right? i would love the pdf file for maximuim boost.

The OEM ECU calculates the quantity of fuel it injects based on a variety of parameters, typically air temperature, percentage of load, throttle position, etc. etc. Most of it is voltages.

The purpose of the fuel tuner or piggy back unit is to intercede the data signals from the various sensors, tell the OEM ECU one thing, all the while controlling the fuel (instead of the ECU) based on those various sensors.

And I would love to email Jared and yourself the .pdf file of Maximum Boost, I cannot as my external hard drive is corrupted, or my laptop is. I need to try the HD on a different computer to make sure it isn't my computer that is the problem. Damn technology!!!

if you wanna run over 4psi properly with no turbo flutter yes its crucial. it releases pressure/unused boost through the opening upon release the throttle.

is my 97 going to be obd2? will the universal aem fic going to work?

BColeman

It should be OBD-II. I believe the switch to OBD-II was in '95 or '96. And yes, the universal one is the one you want to get.

I predict another Beta engine will be sacrificed in the quest of doing it the cheap and unedumacated way.
