View Full Version : Customizing exterior paint -- opinions?

I'm considering painting part of my "Rally Red" 02 GT. Since there are several dings and scratches and stuff, I thought I'd paint it black (possibly matte or satin gloss instead of shiny) from the already-black trim strips down to the frame.

Anyone already done this? I painted my white Subaru Justy like that and it looked good, but I'm not sure how it'll look on an XD GT.

The other thing I considered was painting the center part of the hood black and following the raised ridge on the hood back over the roof to the rear glass. I think that would tend to make the interior hotter in the summer, though.

Thoughts? Opinions? Options?

Do it so I can see what it looks like and decide if I want to do the same. Seriously though I was considering a two tone similar to what you mentioned with black on the rally red, kind of like Fixers Tib. You can see it on the main page at NT.com.

I have been thinking of painting mine at the body crease (about 6in below the windows) a diff color, prob Blue. There was a custom at Sema last year that was two tone like that.

I don't know if the silver will look good with blue. If you do paint it blue, put a black stripe in between to offset it a bit. I'll work on some photochops for you guys. Can you post a couple good pics of your cars in this forum so I have something to work with? Thanks.

That would be an easy photochop. Point me to some pics and I'll post something tonight.

Instead of taking the plunge to paint and the possibility of not liking it, you can always use vinyl....ok, so many people think it is ricey - but it's cheaper, you can take it off if you don't like it, and also change the look of the car whenever you get tired of it. If you've had the car since 02 chances are the paint is faded somewhat enough so having vinyl on there for about a year shouldn't be a big worry for fading if in fact you do remove the vinyl

My car might not be a good starting point for photoshop, already have flames on it. I thinking the same color as my flames or the new blue they are useing on the GTs.

Mine is a 2001 and the paint still looks great, no fading...

Not the best picture, but maybe it'll work. If I paint it, I figure I'd line the top of the black paint with the top of the black side moulding so that there'd be an even line all the way around the car. I think it would look nice with the black paint at the bottom and the smoke tinted windows.

The hood and roof I probably will never paint, but I like the idea of trying it in black vinyl first...

Ronniesan,
Great job!

I do think the black needs to come to the top of the molding though...just my opinion...

the sema car has the most amazing paint job i've seen on an xd, but as far as what you should choose, it's generally best to pick something YOU like. However, you may not be artistic or good with colors... if you're really going for a custom job and you take it to a REAL custom shop there will be an artist on-hand to help conceptualize... my experience anyway, small places won't have this luxury obviously... oh, and it'll probably cost a lot.

the blue and silver chrome is disgusting. flames are dumb on ANY car. blue flames? i guess it's so hot it burns blue. that's ricetastic. the rims are cool, just not on this car. the sema car's paintjob follows the CONTOURS, this is why it looks good. please do not paint the bottom half of your car black, that would be gross looking.

looks like a chevy cavalier, some of them come with black bumpers no matter the color, looks like someone put on a crappy body kit and never painted it.

haha take a look at this:

Thanks Ronniesan! That really helps me have an idea what it would look like (in the parking lot at work, no less!). It does look a bit like a Mercur XR4Ti with the black underbody, and/or like there's a body kit on it that doesn't match!

Now that I see it I hesitate to do it. I guess it looked OK on my old Justy 'cause the bumpers were already black and the car was white. The black doesn't go as well with the red as I thought.

I really like the three-color four door, though! Maybe later I'll go that route with silver under the red to compliment the wheels or something some time in the future...

Forgot about the thread, here's a shot of it with the paint coming to the top of the trim...

If I was to do this paint job, it would follow the CONTOURS , just like Ronnie did in his chop, but without the flames(they are already on the car you ***).

If you have a problem with my car post it in the members threads, this was a thread about future ideas.

My car def falls under some assholes idea of rice, but it was done totally as a drivable show car, and that is what it is, I have a shelf of trophys to show for it. My car is not Fast or Furious, it has never been to or in a street race and I don't have wet dreams about NOS and twin turbos.

What I do to my car will be to make it look like what I want it to, not what a few wantable racers, who want to sit around and call anything you do apperance to a stock car is rice.

seriously? all i need is some cheap knock-off rims, a vinyl sticker that isnt even lined up correctly, oem spoiler, and a lip kit to win a shelf full of trophies? oh shoot, i forgot the liscense plate that says "cool".

my plates say "RADICAL!".

i'd hate to see your competition if you're bringing home the trophies.

i don't think any aftermarket mod on a car is rice, but when it's thrown together, exaggerated, and it just looks like the person is "trying too hard" it becomes rice. stupid looking cars get respect if they have the balls to back up those looks. japanese drifters have gigantic spoilers, i think they're dumb, but you know what? they get props from me because they are extremely high performance.

and no, i don't expect every show car to be pushing 400+ whp, but, like i said, it looks as if it was "thrown together" and that you're "trying too hard". i see excessive mods that don't really add anything to the vehicle. they take away from it because it looks "out of place".

you're right about your car not being fast, but my little comments sure did make you furious! haha ZING.

try planning the appearance mods out--all of them--before you just start throwing things together, you need a plan, a THEME. yadda yadda that's all the advice i'll leave you with for now. :D

Please delete them then, I have to go remove everything from my car now. I must bow down to the overlord of XD tuning.
