Blame Nissan - I think they started it with the Maxima's "4 door sports coupe" marketing.

I just noticed on the neighbors kia soul that it has that same fender insert.

they never called it a coupe. It was 4-door-sports-CAR

And if you owned the original 4DSC's, then you'd agree. They were about as sporty as you could get in a 4 door car from that time. I still miss mine.

I agree though, coupe = 2 doors. no more, no less.
