Well no... not really. But I was told that a thread like this is acceptable so long as it is in the flame forum. However, a thread where people are posting and commenting that they are having a lot of fun doing so gets locked. I thought the "Say something about the person above you" thread was pretty harmless. It was fun. It was good for morale. I didn't post on it to "Post whore," I could really give two ****s about what my post count is. We were having fun and being silly and interacting with people on the board that we don't always get a chance to. We don't have a chat room on this site so that thread became a good alternative. It wasn't hurting anyone, and if you want to look at in a "post wore" way, well, then at least it did a better job of keeping "valuble" threads from getting so clogged up with "nonsense" posts.
So I strongly dislike all of the INTOLERANT, BIASED, POWER-TRIPPING, POSTWORESTHEMSELVES, MOTERATORS.
So know I'm going to think, and think, and think, and think. And then I'll go on a well thought out post whoring spree. No boards or threads are safe. Well, except maybe the ones monitored by cool moderators, because there are a few of them out there.
So remember, in the future, if you want to "post whore" or whatever, do it in a hate-filled threatening thread about women.
I'm Kincaid Charade, and I approved this message.
Disclaimer: I don't hate moderators and I generally don't think they suck.

Other forums I've been on have threads like that, but they rotate different things themes... like somebody posts a word and the next person posts the first word they think of, etc. Something like that is... mostly harmless... especially if it is kept to the "off topic" section, and not taken too seriously. Any thread that promotes creativity, or helps us find out more about each other, or just lets us have a little fun is not a waste. We talk all the time about getting together in person with our cars, why not have fun spending time together online.
Actually, I kinda like the idea of setting a page limit to those types of threads. once it's done, start something new.
I guess this isn't really a flame, just trying to back-up Kincaid... and get some ideas out there.... I can look into ideas for fun-theme threads if people want them, and I'm not gonna get banned for it....

Hmm... you can also look at it from a technical perspective. I don't know if you remember the old forum, but it got really slow over time. Thousands of posts will start to slow down database performance making ElantraXD a less enjoyable experience for you. So since Super put a stop to that thread, he made a quality control decision.
Also, a lot of the bigger forums have very laid back moderators and it causes a lot of problems. For example, it pisses me off sometimes when I visit StangNet.com and everyone is fighting and nothing constructive is said. One thing that I think makes ElantraXD cool is that the moderators take an active role. Sometimes you may disagree with a decision, but for the most part it makes the site better.

But the thing is... we weren't fighting, we were having fun. (I know, perish the thought) And there are plenty of constructive threads. Instead of people interjecting (but not really contributing much) on a "useful" thread just to be heard, this gave them a place to get out all of that "I need to say something" somewhere else.

Yeah, I see your point. This is why I respect Global Mods & Administrators, they have to make tough calls.
KincaidCharade

And I agree. I respect them too. I don't really feel the way this topic states about moderators. It was more of a parody on another crazy post that remained open although offensive when a harmless post got locked.

My take on administration and moderation:
An administrator (i.e. the guy who owns the place) chooses the moderators based on a number of options, but ideally because they think the moderators will help maintain a certain vision or feel to a site.
A moderator gets to make the crappy decisions that no one likes. But that's their choice and their place in a forum. It's better to have a forum with somewhat strict (and predictable -- i.e. w/ written rules) moderation, than it is to have a forum overrun by self-empowered users.
In other words, let the moderators do their job. I'm not saying it's not cool to criticise, as long as the criticism is constructive, but in a lot of cases, the moderators have been doing the message board thing for a very long time, and have a better understanding of the broader scope of things.

^^ I totally agree with what your saying Kincaid. Some of us were just having a little fun w/a couple of posts. I don't see why we should close a certain post if it is going well. I could see closing a post that is using bad language or pictures.
Some of us are in slow period w/mods right now and since we can't talk about our cars we have to enjoy this site in some way, so why not w/off topic posts. I know there is a work post that has been going strong and probably has over a 1,000 posts. All we do is post stuff happening at work or just general things that happen through out the day. So what is wrong w/that?

the thread was 20 pages long (probably one of the longest threads here).
Ive seen those types of threads go longer in other forums, but this is an automotive forum, and it only seems natural that they would like to keep discussions limited to automotive related stuff.
forums like newtiburon.com are removing parts of their off-topic section because of all of the pointless threads.
20 pages reems entirely reasonable to allow a thread like that to continue, I might be able to understand this flame if the post was locked on its first page.

You think 20 pages is something? Check out this thread that has been going strong >>> http://www.elantraxd.com/forums/showthread.php?p=41297#post41297
52 pages!! :D

I think the difference is the 'At work' thread is more of a discussion, than a game. There are questions and stories, and people asking for help, in addition to *****ing about work (works sucks, by the way). It's more of an actual thread, than a topic created to generate mass-posting.
Anyway, it's over now. Let's move on and focus on the Elantra. You warm-weather people have to keep updating us with pictures of new mods, since we're stuck inside, noses pressed against the glass, watching the snow pile up on our cars, dreaming of the day it will be warm enough to mod (or even wash) again. :(

I don't know if this was mentioned or said, because I didn't read the whole thing, however, for the most part moderators aren't really allowed to share their personal opinions, either. They've got to be objective (for the most part) and 'fair.' Now, you try being objective and fair and have everyone like you. ;) Doesn't work. Me personally? I'm not here to make friends. That's not my primary purpose on this site or as a 'moderator.' I try not to say things or do things that make me look like a total douche, yea, but if I do it's no sweat off my back.
I think the point was that a Global Mods job isn't just a status. It's kinda like politics without the tax breaks or voting. ;). We don't plot ways to make your lives hell or restricted.
As far as the slow site issue goes? Man, that comes with owning a high hit site. If you can't pay, don't play. If you don't want lots of 'off-topic' posts, don't have an off topic section. ;) I personally don't think the thread was harming anything. Then again, that's why I'm not a global mod. I don't make big decisions. Only small ones. :)

o_o; A moderator should be someone who isn't a monkey. Who is active and generally courteous. They should be someone who's not afraid to be called names and spit on, like so many of the general population of most forums do anyways. I've only ever locked one thread in my life ^_^ and it was my own.
