Ford Focus 2003 faster than my Car?

I have a 2001 Elantra with 30k, I take care of it Very well. I have a SRI and a full cat back, Denso Iradium plugs, Magnecor wires, Mobil 1. Someone hit my car so it's in the shop, so as I rental I got a 2003 Focus, the most basic model. The car looks terrrible and the interior is ugly. But when my foot hit the gas, I was in shock. The ****ing thing was Quick, very quick. Faster than my car on take off. So low end it's kicks my cars ***, why is this? I didn't know it was that powerful.

I diss agree I had one as a rental and it sucked it was slower didn't have the pep imo

is your car auto/stick ?

and is the focus auto/stick ?

one thing to point out, if the focus is auto, the torque/gearing may fool you into thinking that its faster than your xd ..

for instance... my brother in law once rented a 2004 dodge durango 5.7L v8 model.

we went for a drive and that thing had MONSTER torque on low end.. it felt like it would squish you into the seat and dart forward like a missile..!!

So we went out and raced it against my elantra...

1st gear.. I pulled him off the line and got 1 full car length.
2nd gear.. I pulled another 2 car lengths so a total of 3 at this point..
3rd gear.. I got so far ahead that I just let off because i beat his *** easily.


so that goes to show ....

low end torque is fun, but you have to be able to keep making power in mid / high rpms otherwise you cant win a race...

Fordfaster with the great response, I agree with you on that. I mainly car about 0-60 times more than anything else. Both cars are Auto. Of course I have no way of comparing 0-60 times of both cars. But I do like the missle like torque of the Focus. I'll try to take it on the highway and see how it does overall. I'd like to point out the design on the air intake of the focus is very smart. The intake throttle body is toward the front of the engine, and the stock intake tubing is in the shape of a "J", with bottom of the "J" sucking from the fender wall. Makes me wonder how nice the newer focus is with the faster engine.

a 2.3 or a 2.4l (... which one is it i forget...) is probably faster but i don't think they made that in 2003.

That's weird cause i read on sportcompact magazine that their project focus zx3 had a really bad response partly due to the throttle body design. not the location or the direction of the throttle body, but the structure inside...

when i had my car completly stock i went aganst a 4 door supercharged focus, it put up a good fight but i won, we both have A/T trans.
he said that it was the smallest sc kit they had,.... i beleve that

bofus...lol.......icedoutplaya raced him too but he was stock and killed him badly....but when i raced him after the sc, he was like to 1 ft. ahead of me in 1st and in 2nd but i started to pull ahead after that, i cant wait until i go turbo

I had a 2004 Focus ZX-3 5 speed for about 33 days (that's another story)

145hp which is way more than the 2003 car and way more torque 2.3L vs 2.0L

It would eat up a Stock or Near Stock Elantra one because of weight and two because of output. Doesn't take much to put one into the mid 14's. Just bolt-ons, the engine is Low Emissions Certified but I/H/E+Pulley adds about 30hp to the wheels. 120-125hp at the wheels is stock. There several running around now with the basics well over 140hp at the wheels and some as high as 150-155hp with 2.0L European Mondeo camshafts.

However, Cosworth is releasing a Stage system that will increase HP at the wheels over 200hp N/A, no turbo or supercharger. Though an intercooled supercharger kit is in the R&D stage and they are considering putting it into the production.

I wouldn't get too brave around Foci, alot of them are finally starting to put it together and put down some decent power numbers.

this may be the case... But on the street I have torn up several zx3 foci and i recently beat a 2002 6spd SVT focus from a roll and from the hole... all he had was a full cat-back exhaust and everything else stock...

It was fun to smoke him ! LOL

I'll second that. On the street is totally different that on paper, I have this idiot in an 03 Audi A4 1.8T that keeps trying me on Rt 28. I have bested him three different times now and he keeps coming back for more! Focus' are usually not much competition because the driver isn't as capable as their car.
