View Full Version : Stock intake addition

I have been thinking for a while about my options to get more out of my stock intake. I bought a K&N panel filter not too long after I bought my car, so I was not ready to give it up just yet. I have removed the stock resonator in the fender, and left the elbow from the stock airbox that hovers above the hole in the now empty fender well. I cut the D-shaped part off the top of the resonator to use as a back up adapter so everything would "plug" right in to the factory stuff. I just wanted to extend that elbow down into the fender to take advantage of some cooler air outside the engine compartment. However, the next part was where I was struggling. What to use next? Corregated drain pipe, PVC, dryer connector hose? I was at a loss. I am really picky, and I wanted it to look good and perform better than my current setup.

I was just about settled on a short 90 degree PVC elbow, when I came across this on the EGT web board. Props to ASC04GT for his drawing (first pic). So, I still was not sure what I was looking for, but since the wife and I were at Lowe's looking for a shower head, I ran by the plumbing section, and was looking at the PVC. I almost bought a piece, but then came across a black 3" rubber 90 degree elbow at the end of the isle. I was like - this is it! So, it was a little over $9 (wish I knew where he got his at that price in the pic) and I was anxious to get it fitted. My concern was, would I need my "home made" adapter as I mentioned above, or would it work without it? I also did not know if there was a difference between the 04, and 01-03 elbow (pic looks like 04 is squared, but 01-03 is D-shaped). Needless to say, the 3" pipe swallowed up my adapter, so that would not work. Since this thing was large and stretchable, could I get it over the odd D-shaped elbow? After some stretching, tucking, and grimacing (my father-in-law & myself) we got it to make a perfect seal around the elbow, and since the end was flared, once folded flat to get it through the fender hole, it held itself in place. Here are a few pics. I reset the ECU, and butt dyno felt some improvement (how much was due the reset, only time will tell). There was more grunt at the low end, and even some noticeable gain in the higher gears at speed. Notice from the last pic, it does not set really low in the fender. A plus since with a CAI, I would worry about water. If the performance stays close to what it is now, for $9, I couldn't ask for much more. Opinions?

Don't use 90 degree angles in your duct. Air flows better when the bend is smoother. I was thinking of doing the same thing, but i already have a SRI. I'm not sure what material to use but im searching. And the one i want to make would have the duct connected to a funnel over the foglight hole to see if that would force more flow into the compartment area of the SRI.

its true air doesnt like hard angles like 90 degrees. If hyundai only thought about that when designing our IM.

Technically, it is a 90 degree elbow, but the angle is smoother than that. Its not like the air goes in the inlet, hits a brick wall and then goes vertical. I could cut off some of the end so it more or less just has an opening into the fender.

Eventually, I would like to do something custom that gives the positives of both the CAI and SRI (Cold air - CAI, torque & no water worry - SRI) kinda like what Jay was trying to achieve.

This was posted on the GT club board. Cannot remember if it was posted here or not - sorry if RP.

I would say that this mod is good for about 2 hp. :)

awesome work for $9 bux.

I had a similar setup as this when I first got my Xd... instead i used 4 inch dryer hose duct.... worked great then one day I swallowed 2 gallons of water into the engine when I hit a deep puddle.. I could not really see how deep it was so i risked it... OOPS...

no biggie, motor was fine and I flushed it with 2 sequential oil changes and it has run fine ever since... then I sprayed a 90 shot for a few months and that was fun while it lasted.... then I sold the kit and now i'm waiting for my alipine blower to come in :)

power is addictive.

Thanks Ford. You never know if you are going to get praised or pummeled on here. LOL

thanks :)

however I would still like to point out that if you install a true 3 inch CAI the difference will be NIGHT and DAY ! :) e-bay... $30. :)

Looking at the site you posted docrgls, a diy intake system would be worth it if you had tubing coming from several different entry points on the car and would all lead to the airbox, in an elantra's case i guess use the 2 foglight openings and underneath the car with an angled tube. However using a plastic container may heat the air more than help if the car isnt moving fast enough for the air to move thru, for instance when at idle. So use extra heat resistant tape to wrap the tubes, probably find at Home Depot.

Looks good to me. Definately better than stock, and for $9 you can't go wrong.

You have awesome comic book font handwriting though.

Wish I could take credit for the writing Super (gave credit in my original post). A buddy of mine from grade school who drew comics wrote like that now that you mention it..... and yes, better than stock was my main objective (and hopefully another step above a removed resonator & elbow).

And yes Ford, I would probably have a CAI already if I had not gotten the panel filter. I am just not ready to give it up just yet. :)

A muffler and exhaust will be the next and probably last mods for a while since we have a new house and the wife is wanting to start a family...

I was thinking the same thing about his handwriting. :)

I am thinking about modifing mine to a true ram air system does anybody know about how much HP that would add, I have short-ram right now??

It would add like 1 hp if you are lucky...

:)

you are better off with a CAI or a modified cold air duct leading to the SRI.

that looks pretty good to do but at the same time a lot of work in some cases but i guess it tepidness on what you are doing making a CAI with a air flow box so you don't get water in it, or it could just be a normal ram air box.

How much clearance is there between the hood and the top of the box when the hood is closed? Any idea?
