So I'm driving my dad's Sonata to class today since my Elantra is in the shop. I only needed it for one night, since I'm picking my car up tomorrow. On my way to class, I get rear ended by some punk Civic - my bumper has a few scratches - his front grille is busted and his hood is bent. Ha! So the cops come, ask for my license, insurance, and . . .what? no registration? No, it's not my car - I'm just using it for one day only since mine's in the shop. So what happens? He gives me a @#*&% $180 ticket for not having registration!!! It's dated 6:05 - I have a freaking exam in 5 minutes! Asking my dad for his registration card wasn't the first thing on my mind when I left the house!!! ARGHHH! I'm going to try to be calm about this in court, but I'm still slashing that cop's tires so he doesn't show up.

that sucks...i know here, you have 24 hours to come up w/ your insurance...im not sure if its the same about registration, but if you can prove the car is registered, you should be able to get out of it

i always keep everything in the glove box....just in case!....good luck with that

My dad refuses to keep the registration card in the glove box - he says it's too risky to have that right next to insurance in case it gets stolen. Well, I guess he's paying my ticket if I don't get out of it.

That is so funny, in about July I guess I was driving home from nyc down the jersey turnpike right by new brunswick and I got pulled over for speeding... 92 in a 65... and since I was out and about all day I didn't bring my bag so my registration was in there... an extra 176 on top of the 200+ fine that I had to pay for speeding. But oh well, it was my own fault, I shouldn't have been speeding to begin with. Must be something with that area... ****in new jersey... lol

Did I mention it happened on Route 18 in New Brunswick? And it's not funny . . . :( (There's no smiley for crying)

Well no not funny 'haha' funny just funny that we both got that ticket in/around the same area... oh nevermind. lol That's ok though I got a speeding ticket today, 159 bucks. yummy. I'm probably going to take it to court though so that I won't get points. freakin cops are hiding out on sidestreets right near my school and busting everybody. oh well though, they are just doing their jobs I guess, but the registration thing? That sucks.

I'm not old enough to be your dad, silly. Although if you're really a girl (and you can never tell online these days), you can call me daddy any time.

Wait - does that mean you are that easy? I'm intrigued. You know, Philly isn't all that far away.
Roadtrip!! Once my Elantra is out the shop, of course.

Hey - nice pic. So if you hang around with gay guys, does that mean you're single? Hmmm...
Am I taking this way too far? Probably. Is it funny? Absolutely.

I'm only single every other week. (don't ask)
Think we went a little off topic? Just a bit... ;) lol

It's the flame section - no one cares about going off topic.
Whenever someone says "Don't ask," I feel forced to. So what exactly do you mean by single every other week? Don't feel forced to answer though.

I hope so. Well, I'm gonna go sleepy now - gotta take my moms to the dentist at 8 - eek. We'll continue this entertaining discussion tomorrow cuddlebug - cya.
Im still trying to figure out how the cop is stupid when all he is doing is his job, and you are the one that didnt have what was required by State law...

Have your Dad go with you to court and have him explain why the registration was not in the car.

I guess after you read the 1st page it doesn't look like he was intrested in the ticket :)
My mom was sort of in the same situation. She could not find her registration, so they gave her a ticket. But did you explain that it was your Dad's car? I mean he might let you try to call your Dad to find out where the registration is. I don't know why it wouldn't be in the glove compartment.

As I said before, my dad keeps the registration in his wallet for security reasons.
And to whoever doesn't see why the cop is stupid, I guess you wouldn't mind if you were rear ended by a Civic who doesn't know how to use his brakes, and then end up getting a $180 ticket because you don't have some little card that doesn't really mean jack considering they can just look up the plate/license/insurance info on their computer? And may I also add that some states don't require you to have registration anymore? (Thx to whoever mentioned that about Illinois) I'm sure you're going to be tempted to reply "I wouldn't be dumb enough to forget my papers blah blah", but let's not turn this topic into flaming each other, please?

I wouldn't call the cop stupid either, just doing his job. It does suck that you got hit though, and that's why you got the ticket.
Oh, and 2Bit is a police officer, that's probably why he doesn't like hearing cops being called stupid (although I'm sure some are, there are stupid people in every profession).

Perhaps I should call him uncaring and inconsiderate instead of stupid then?
Look, I'm not one of these punks that just hates cops in general. When my 96 wagon got wrecked by a truck who ran a stop sign, the cop gave me a ride home. I like cops - they're usually good people unless you're doing something bad. But I got screwed royally in this case by the guy's partner - I could tell one of them didn't want to give me a ticket, but the other one was all quoting regulations and crap. There was really no need for it, but I guess he just wanted to get a little power trip like some cops do (like I said, not all, but if you lived here, you'd know the majority are jerks). I see people talking on cell phones all the time now (which is now illegal in jersey), but I don't see any of them getting a ticket. Why is it always the good drivers that get screwed over?

That sucks sorry to hear it
I won't deny that most Officers are unfeeling. You almost have to be. You see the worst in people everyday. What do you expect ? After a few years of having people lie straight to your face damn near everyday, seeing people that have the crap beat out of them all the time, shot, stabbed, hung, mangled in auto accidents, you would loose the feeling of empathy and sympathy yourself. All that matters then is the job.
Most Officers loose the feeling of empathy and sympathy for someone because if they have it then then loose the ability to be objective and do the job required of them.
If I responded to a call where a couple people were shot and broke down and cried, I damn sure couldn't do the job.
Thats the way it is. Sorry if it is blunt.

um....any posts i have made about racing were all jokes.
:abovelol: :abovelol:
ha good thing youre in Vegas and not where im @
Lol :D
By the way, I got rear ended by a lady one day in my old Neon. When I got asked by the Officer to show proof of insurance, registration and D/L, I did and I discovered that I did not have the current insurance card in the car even though I had insurance. I forgot, and left it at home. Guess what? I got a citation for it, (no valid proof of insurance) had to go to Court, and all that. The Officer did his job. I have no heartburn with him for doing it.
A Homicide buddy of mine was driving his unmarked company (Departmental) car home and was traveling too close to a guy and when the guy stopped all of a sudden he ran into the back of the guy wrecking a unmarked Departmental car. Guess what? He got cited for following too close and causing an accident. He also had to spend quite a few hours on remedial driver training LOL :D
By the way, it's not just Police Officers that are that way. Most Fire and EMS people are the same way. They have to be to do their jobs also. A Fireman cant show up to a burning building and go inside and see 2 charred bodies and cry, they have to put the fire out. EMS has to get inside the wrecked cars and pull people out with arms and legs severed, or try and save the drowned baby , and they dont have time to cry either. It's the same mentality as a Soldier in battle that sees his buddy get blown in half. He has to continue to fight, he has to keep going. It's the nature of the jobs. It's nothing personal.

How much was your fine?
I had to go to Court, and plead guilty for not having proof of insurance in the vehicle (which is true). Being that my Insurance had not lapsed, and I could show proof of that with the current and previous insurance cards in Court, the ticket was dismissed.
This was not favortism as some might think, as that is the same for everyone, once proof is shown that there is no lapse in insurance all the citations are dismissed.
However it will not stop the Officer from writing the Citation for the offense, which is his job. He saw no proof of Insurance , and I could not prove that I had insurance when asked (even though I know I did,) which is State Law. My word that I did have it didnt mean jack without that little card.
If the insurance has lapsed, (no insurance) then you are fined by the Court which is not cheap.

all good points made, 2bit. yes, cops have to be objective and to do so they have to treat everyone the same and not let empathy get in the way. it seems that we've grown accustomed to cops "letting us off" once in awhile, and when we here stories like that from others, we tend to think we too "deserve" to get let off when we get pulled over or don't have our papers ready. we don't "deserve" to get let off but we are lucky when we do, and should see it as luck and nothing more. we should actually consider ourselves more lucky, since we don't typically get pulled over for minor stuff like not using our turn signals (which seems to be quite a widespread phenomenon in the US). a cop in europe would have no problem issuing a citation for that.
Thanks. By the way the fine in Nevada for no insurance is 1000 dollars. Heard it in Court this morning. :eek2:
