: [MD/UD] 2011 Hyundai I40W (Elantra Touring)
Matrixloader 12-19-2010, 04:45 AM These are the very-first teaser images of the up-coming Hyundai i40W, which will replace the Sonata mid-size sedan in Europe. Styled at Hyundai’s European design headquarters, the new i40W promises to deliver a “stand out from the crowd” exterior design appearance influenced heavily by a raft of latest Hyundai concept cars, including the i-flow, Genus and ix-onic concept vehicles.
Furthermore, the all-new Hyundai i40W will be available as a wagon or four-door sedan. The i40W-agon is slated to go on sale shortly after its official premiere set for the 2011 Geneva Auto Show, while the four-door i40 sedan is scheduled to hit the European market in Autumn next year. According to sources close to Hyundai, the i40W (wagon) will also hit the U.S. shores sometime in 2012.
Under the hood, there will be a wide range of highly-advanced gasoline and diesel four-cylinder engines available. Entry-level i40W will be offered by Hyundai’s latest 1.6L GDI engine, which churns out 140 horsepower, while the top of the range i40W will feature a 177-hp 2.0L gasoline engine. Diesel power will come out from the all-new 1.7L CRDI diesel engine, which will pack 115 (low output model) or 136 horsepower (high output model).
A more potent 2.0L R-diesel engine will also be added to the range later, says Hyundai. The 2.0L CRDI diesel engine will pack 177 horsepower and will be mated to Hyundai’s all-new dual clutch automatic transmission.
The all-new Hyundai i40W main competitors will be the VW Passat, Opel Insighnia and Ford Mondeo, which currently dominate the D-segment market in Europe. Stay tuned for more images and information about the new i40W!

SuperGLS 12-19-2010, 08:25 AM I saw these on Autoblog the other day and they were calling them the European Sonata wagon as well. Doesn't make any sense to my head.
Why would they build what is clearly an Elantra wagon and market it elsewhere as an Elantra wagon. I guess Europe isn't getting our 2011 Elantra, huh? They must be sticking with the i30 and i30cw (our current Touring).
Anyhow, I like it. Even that funny D pillar.
Silentwolf 12-19-2010, 10:26 AM Elantra touring/I30 is a C-segment class. The Sonata Wagon/I40 is a D-segment class. So quit trying to put the two together.
Matrixloader 12-19-2010, 11:39 AM I know, europe calls it the sonata wagon, how can you have a front end of an elantra and call it a sonata? i seriously think there is a missprint somewhere, this is oviously an elantra from the front and sides, i see no resemblence of a sonata at.
Think about it, it looks like an elantra, it has the elantras 1.6 140hp motor so it has to be the elantra.
The sonata has a 2.4L engine, a 1.6 would make it the slowest wagon on earth as it would be very underpowered.
only1db 12-19-2010, 04:01 PM there were pics of the sonata wagon floating around here somewhere....but we are not getting it in the usa (atleast not that i have heard) european market is....and krackeikjdkj already said that they new MD platform will come out in 2013 and the NOW touring will be let go in favor of it.
Catfish 12-19-2010, 05:23 PM Spyshots of the Sonata/i40 Wagon on testing in Germany can be seen on autoblog: http://www.autoblog.com/2010/08/27/spy-shots-2012-hyundai-sonata-i40-wagon-caught-testing-again/

I know, this is why it doesn't make sense. Were you telling me to stop or the internet in general? I think we are both saying the same thing. I think!
only1db 12-19-2010, 08:54 PM actually the front of that looks like the MD...not the YF...this is confusing.

That's because the grille of the US-Sonata ist way to big and has to much chrome for European customers. Plus it doesn't "fit" in the lineup of the other Hyundai models in Europe (ix20, ix35, i30 facelift...)!
only1db 12-20-2010, 02:53 PM and if you look at it...it has the vertical intercooler...(same spot as the usa turbo version...a turbo wagon?) i'm really confused.
hyunelan2 12-20-2010, 02:59 PM Turbo Diesel? Does Hyundai use Turbo on their diesel engines? I know very little about Hyundai's Diesels.
only1db 12-20-2010, 06:53 PM your guess is as good as mine....maybe its a new motor? i guess we will just have to wait
Catfish 12-21-2010, 12:32 PM The intercooler belongs to the 1.7 Diesel engine! In Europe the Sonata/i40 will come with the 2.0 Nu making 170PS and with the 1.7 Diesel making 115PS. Unfortunately the 2.4 GDI will not be sold in Europe. Perhaps we might get the 2.0 GDI-T later...

MD:

"Unknown Spy Car":

YF (hybrid edition):

I have to agree. I wonder if this is really the i30 Touring and not the i40 Sonata wagon.
On closer inspection, the "Unknown Spy Car" has the same door lines as the YF. And while the front fascia is similar to the MD, it's more upright. My guess is this is the i40 Sonata wagon and they are giving it the new Hyundai "corporate" nose like the 2012 Elantra and 2011 Tucson.

only1db 12-21-2010, 05:11 PM i really do think its the sonata wagon...because they made refference to it some time ago before they even came out with the MD (over the summer maybe?) again i'm going to throw my hands up...dont know.
SuperGLS 12-21-2010, 09:04 PM The front is too MD like to be a Sonata. If they decide to market the same vehicle as two different things in different markets it'll be the stupidest mistake ever.
Matrixloader 12-21-2010, 10:35 PM So if this is the european sonata wagon, wich looks like the MD from the front, does that mean the 2011 elantra MD will be marketed as the european sonata sedan??????

I really believe this is the Sonata wagon. We've already seen similar pics (http://www.elantraxd.com/forums/showthread.php?37778-2011-Sonata-Press-Release-Info-Pictures-Videos-Sedan-Hybrid-Turbo-Wagon-PRICING!/page3):

It's definitely the Sonata/i40 Wagon. They changed the frontend and some other details due to the different preferences of european customers! That's why it looks like the MD (which will not be sold in Europe)!
only1db 12-23-2010, 09:17 AM ah...and probably why we WONT get the hatch in america...
XD20GT 05-30-2011, 06:17 AM I followed an I40 wagon along Epping Road here in Sydney last week in peak hour! It had the Hyundai "H" badge at the back, but no Hyundai, I40, or Sonata badged on it. More than likely an early car released to the media for testing, as the magazines generally take 2-3 months from driving a car to getting it to the newsagent.
Looks very good in the flesh, but a little too large for what I need I my next car. Elantra size woudl be good, but Sonata size is just too big.
