I recently bought a 2001 GLS. Can anyone tell me if the 2.0 is an interference motor. I need to know this because the car has nearly 100,000 miles on it already and I do not know if the timing belt was changed at the suggested 60,000 mile mark. If the motor is an interference motor, I'm changing it now. If it isn't, I will wait until the scheduled 120,000 mile service. The car runs great, so I don't think there is a problem with the belt, but i don't want to have to rebuild the heads if something happens.

wow, that was fast. Not what I wanted to hear, but wow, that was fast. Guess I may need to set some time aside for a timing belt job. Thanks tharptroy! If anyone else recalls differently, please tell me soon - cause I'll be doing this job within a week.

if you do it now, you just wont have to worry about it at the 120k service....
I have a spare motor(thats still assembled) I could probably pull the belt and spin the timing pulley to see if anything happens

Ummmm - I wouldn't want you to hurt a motor just for my answer. if the belt wasn't changed at 60,000 and it's gone 100,000 miles, it should make it another 80,000 with no problems on the new belt.

i was talking about spinning it by hand since the motor is out of the car, but there seems to be a consensus that you need to replace it.
