View Full Version : Finally got around to installing my AEM

So I finally got around to installing the AEM accord intake I had lying around. It was a lot more of a pain in the *** than I thought. I noticed when I opened the box that it was a 1 piece intake, not a two piece. Because of this I needed to buy another silicone fitting and cut the pipe. I also had to grind off the remainder of the mount bracket so I could join the cut pipes back together. I also needed to cut about 4 inches off the fender end of the pipe to make room for the filter. After this was done everything went in together pretty smoothly. I made sure all of my connections were tight, split the extra piece of hose down the middle and used it to surround the fender hole to keep the pipe from making noise, and fired it up.
I'm curious about a couple of things though:
1. I wasn't expecting the intake to be as loud as it is. It's LOUD. I assume that's normal, but it's still a lot louder than I was expecting.
2. I can't tell if the car feels faster or not. I think it might actually feel slower. Maybe I was expecting more of an increase and because I'm not feeling what I was expecting, it feels slower. Is this normal? All of my connections are tight. I have a ported intake manifold, bored throttle body, and phenolic spacer, if that helps anyone.
So to sum up, I have a loud car that feels slower. LOL
Oh, by the way, I did reset the ECU as the battery was disconnected for the hour or so I was working.

I am not 100% on this but I always thought full CAI will result in lost in low end torque but gain in high end HP that might explain your slow feel. :)

Mine is definately loud if you accelerate quickly or get the car up above 3500 RPM. I don't like when I start it after it has sat for a while, it is really loud and kinda sounds like a busted '89 Sentra or something, uhh.
As for slower... I doubt it. I don't think I'd say I noticed a gain in acceleration though. Sad.

Load is normal. I hope the noise you are hearing is not the intake rubbing against the inside fender. What size is the pipe? Where exactly does the car feel slower? I just put in mine a little while ago, and my car feels a lot better overall. What intake did you have before?

Okay, I just wanted to make sure it was normal and I guess it is. Oh well, if nothing else, it LOOKS a hell of a lot better. ;0)

I've actually heard the opposite - that the longer intake runner length helps the torque on a small motor. Too free flowing an intake or exhaust won't allow for the necessary backpressure to build up torque.

The pipe size is 2 1/2. I widened the fender hole slightly and covered the metal edges with rubber tubing so there wouldn't be any metal on metal rubbing. I didn't have an intake before - just the OEM aribox with the resonator removed. As for where it feels slower, I have to drive it some more tomorrow to really know. It's raining right now so I have to wait until it's dry.

i see....
"feeling" is not considered scientifically reasonable..
you need to dyno before and after to know for sure, otherwise you'll be just like i was with my gtech...

Also, what was the outside temp when you tested your intake? It's raining in NYC, but it didn't stop me from testing out my car..lol what state do you live in?

CAI give you more low end torque....and it opens up on the top end...the best of both worlds!

Yeah... mine felt the same way when I put it in. Also... it seems like after installing the CAI and new exhaust, I'm getting much less fuel economy than before. I only average around 23-24 mpg now. I'm not driving much harder than before either.

I have a CAI and a catback exhaust and there has been absolutely no change in my gas mileage.

I dont have a CAI myself... flooding issues around me.... but I removed my resonator and everytime my moms in the car she's always commenting on how loud my car sounds compared to the GLS that we also have...
haha "cruising" at 80 rarely will you get to do that if you live in the NY metro area....mainly because people like to sit in the left lane and do 65 no matter how many people are bunched up behind them... and when you pass them they throw a hissyfit and flash and honk...that or they're on the phone (not handsfree) and reading or changing the radio around and weave like they've had a few too many...for once I'd like to rip them outta their car and *****slap some sense into them.... but for now I weave in and around idiots mainly using the right lane to pass...

I'm sure you don't have as bad of a flooding issue as I do here in Miami. Thats how i lost my first engine...lol
