If I lived on the east coast I would definitely be up for that trip. Niagara Falls is beautiful, especially on the Canadian side. I stayed at the Embassy Suite, it had the most awesome view of the falls and the room had it's own jacuzzi. It was around $180 U.S. dollars with taxes and parking per night, but it was worth it. The new casino also opened right next door.

I was thinking the same thing, on your last meeting thread someone mentioned Niagara falls, and I thought that maybe in the spring time, but you'd have to have a lot of planning, and commitment from us Canadians to make it worth while...

What about making it around the Drift competition time, I beleive its in June or July in Toronto. Several of my friends and I want to see that next year.

niagra falls is goreguous (sp) im tired today but anyways i've been up there once when we went to a wedding up there. I wonder if we could find a hotel and bunk together up there and share costs cause its probably expensive.

Sounds like a good idea. 13 hours? It didn't even take us that long to get to Toronto, it's more like a 9 hour drive from Northern VA.

Still, I think if it was the summer I'd more likely want to drive the 15 hours down to Southern Florida and see Ford's car (with Supercharger by then) as well as hot girls in bikinis... plus there is a lot of other Florida people to meet.

I don't think we should just keep this as a NorthEastern Meet...

If newtiburon can Have TIBATHON in Daytona beach for the ENTIRE country....

then we can have...

LANTRATHON!

I know I know... I'm pitiful

04GTboySC
11-29-2004, 12:04 PM
yup thats for sure, ur pitiful, jk well my friend thats movin up to northern va is thinking about putting a club together called East Coast Hyundai and have meets all around the east coast.

There happens to be a meet at South Of The Border towards the end of January, ya i know its still kinda cold out but I went last year. A bunch of cars and burn outs in the vacant parking lot.

I'd love to go, but im only 16, and I only have a PA jr's license. I just wish there were some meet's closer to Butler. Maybe in the summer though I could talk my parents into driving outta state somewhere.

OdessitPashka

you cant drive out of state when you are 16?

OdessitPashka

I still haven't gotten my green card and still considered Ukrainian resident, so in order for me to get to Canada, I'd have to go through a lot of hassle and get travel visa.

black04gt
12-03-2004, 01:57 PM
there are locations along the border that you can just walk across, and then hop in someone's car on the other end. Oh, also, I'm down for the meet. From NY here

KeWLKaT
12-03-2004, 02:13 PM
Yep, the border is really thin in some areas! But the matter is that you have to find those easy access entrances

OPZ
12-03-2004, 04:02 PM
Is the junior liscence the one where you have to drive with someone next to you? ;)

Nah, thats the permit. For some strange reason, PA has it where you can get your permit the day you turn 16, then after 6 months you can test and get the Jr's license, in which it is just like a regular license, but your not allowed to drive between teh hours of 11 PM and 5 AM. Then at 18 (or 17 and a half if your a "good" driver) you can get your Sr. license, in which its... well a license with no restrictions!

OdessitPashka

12-03-2004, 10:37 PM
ill go if i have enough money by then. i went to the canadian side as well about 10 yrs ago though. that view was tiiiiiight!! we went on that stupid walk under the falls instead of the boat. damn that sucked!!! so the plan is to sneak OPZ and escort him and his car out of PA avoiding the popo.(just box his car in while driving so he is kinda hidden.lol) to canada and smuggle odessit across the border! damn this is going to be one fun trip!! the only thing missing is somebody bringing a barrel to ride down the falls in!! heheheheheheheee! that could be a dare! lol J/K!!!

KeWLKaT
12-03-2004, 11:49 PM

SuperGLS
12-07-2004, 01:16 AM
Actually I strongly disagree. It's WAY better to prepare for a Hyundai meet long in advance. Someone who lives in/near Niagra Falls should take the initiative to set up a place and date for this to go down. That way people can take off work (if they have to) well in advance. Waiting for later and asking people "When can you make it?" will just get you 6 different answers from 40 different people. Then you simply make the turnout lower than it has to be. Everyone knows that U.S. Hyundai meet turnout is also less than stellar, and I think this is one of the reasons.

I think that this years B-more meet had great planning and it was a great 2-3 day event. We simply didn't meet up and "hang out" for a couple hours. RDubois and OP did a good job to set it up and plan events. Of course we did decide different things on the spot, but having an overall agenda made it much more enjoyable for me (and I'm sure for the others).

One final thing. If people are going to say they are going to show up, THEN SHOW UP. If you aren't going to come, then don't say you will be, this is probably the thing I hate most about Hyundai meets. Sorry for the rant. Anyway, I don't think it's ever too early to start planning. If someone has this meet (if scheduled in April-June) planned by the end of January it will be more successful.

OdessitPashka
12-07-2004, 01:22 AM
Well, if you remember super, for the baltimore meet, we have 15 pages of posts saying that 30 people were going to show up, and only half was able to make it. It's not possible to make plans half a year ahead, at least for 50-70% of the people. Plans change and some people can't make it for one or another reason.

I will be willing to be an organizer of this meeting, since I'm a mod and that's pretty much my job, I'd also need a person that's going to help me, someone who lives near the Nigra Falls and knows the area, or at least been there a couple of times.

BlueRush
12-07-2004, 01:30 AM
I'd be more than happy to help, but I have an idea. Instead of Niagra Falls meet, we can still go though, why not meet at one of these.

The Syracuse Nationals will be held July 15- 17, 2005, in Syracuse, N.Y. The 2004 event attracted more than 6,500 entrants and 73,000 participants from 40 states.

or

The Right Coast Association also holds a one-day show, the Sport Compact and Truck Blast, to be held July 30, 2005, in Syracuse. In 2004, each event drew more than 11,000 participants.

just an idea

btw, I live 1hr north of Syracuse.

I was thinking of a drive threw the twisty Adirondack mountians. Good or bad idea?

Take a look at this site. http://www.cruisethefalls.com/
You might be able to get some pointers on where to have it. For the last 4 years the PT Cruisers have been holding a huge gathering at the Falls. The whole thing started just like this, a guy on the Pt forums wanted to get together and they have been able to get 500+ Pt's there every year. My Aunt goes and said the area they hold it in is great. The hotel that they stay in has a huge field next door that they let them set up the show in.

It only takes 2 1/2 hours to get from Syracuse to Buffalo, traffic is usually mild.

I believe we should start by doing a couple of things, coorect me if I'm wrong:

1: Determine the dates we would like to gather, I would think a Friday-Sunday event.

2: Decide if we will be going to any major schedualed events (Car Shows, Fairs, and such).

3: Go from there.

Trying to organize something like this a month or two before is suicide and we just all be setting ouselves up to fail. So..... Ilanpro you started the post so this is your call. Do we start to get organized and gat a few other people to help out? Or do we wait and have a ****ty time?

Just a point of info for everyone, if the plan is to spend more than one day at the falls, I would recommend staying there. Between Buffalo and the falls is a toll road and you have to pay each way on every trip. Not sure what the current cost is, haven't been there in a while.

As for the suggestion to meet up in syracuse, that wouldn't work for me or others coming from the west. We would drive past Buffalo to get there and then have to turn around and head back. I would just meet you guys in Buffalo.

Oh yeah...by the way, I'm in if this is going to happen! Would be a really nice trip and I like the idea about going to the sport compact show also....there are some important companies that go to these things, and maybe if they see a strong showing of modded elantras we might be able to get them to start making mods for us....also just a thought, but once we get all the plans finalized, if we are def. going to the car show, sponsorships??? We know some people from sharkracing and kspec, so would this be a possibility? :drive:

I might, MIGHT, be sponsored by Pioneer or Memphis by then so we'll see. I think it is time we make a new thread, lock it, and have an Admin update it when we get things decided. Maybe put a poll on it to determine the best dates, events everyone wants. Just an idea. ADMINS?

I read all of your messages and looking at your thoughts. No need to post for every reply made.
I'm not gonna lock this yet, just give more ideas and I want to see more people involved in this. So far I like most of the things that you guys said and consider them all. It's also a little to early to make any plans and setup dates. We will do it when it gets closer.

Odessit, why would you not want to start planning and organizing this event now? Like it's been said a number of times in this thread the earlier the better. The longer we sit on this without setting a date the less likely people are to show up. Major events are always planned ahead. Look at the Sema show; they just had it a month ago. They already have the 2005 date set. Like I said before if we wait there will be less turnout. Why don't we make a plan to have a set date by say, the end of Jan? Then we can get a head count of people who want to go and get hotel info.

I really would like this to be a successful turnout and it would really suck if people couldn't go and meet the people they talk to on a daily basis.

P.S. Why would you lock this thread?

its already 6 pages long and alot of people dont like reading long threads thats probably the reason

If you guys are planning a major roadtrip like this, it will definitely need to be planned way ahead in advance to figure out the costs and to collect any deposits and what not. If I could, I'd drive from the West Coast just to join, but my time doesn't permit me to do that.

As far as tolls are concerned, it's not anything expensive. The toll is for some lame bridge you cross on the American side if I remembered correctly. Since you guys are in the East Coast, you're all pretty familiar with toll roads to begin with, something that was a new concept for a West Coast native. I never realized why our highways were called "free"ways until I drove on the East Coast. The tolls for Niagara were nowhere near as bad as all the tolls in NYC.

If you visit Niagara Falls, it's almost pointless driving that far and not crossing the border. The best view of the falls will be from the Canadian side. If I get a chance I"ll upload a picture I took from my hotel room, where I stayed at the Embassy Suites in Niagara Falls, Canada.

I don't know if you guys will want to stay overnight across the border or not, because things in Canada generally cost more. For example, a typical Denny's dinner will cost you almost 2x as much. They are trying to make the town a bit touristy, but when I went during the summer, it seemed a bit dead, at least compared to Vegas. The Casino used to be in the bad part of town, but by now they should have a huge hotel with a large casino that's closer to the main part of town. The Embassy Suite w/ parking and after all the Canadian taxes came out to around $189 U.S. per night. If you have the money, it's completely worth it.

Oh and another thing to remember, if you're going to cross the border, just to save yourself some time and hassle (especially if you are foreign born like me), please bring your passport with you. It is not required, but coming back in will be a LOT easier. Crossing the border you'll only need your driver's license and a reason why you're visiting. But upon coming back, you will be grilled with some questions.

Apparently, because my girlfriend was white, and I'm a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Thailand, they had enough suspicion to pull us aside for more than an hour and a half for questioning. In the end, I could not prove my citizenship through the use of their ****ty computer systems, but the head officer interviewed me and really could not find a reason to detain me, especially when I speak perfect English and I only visited Gananoque for the day. He apologized and let me on my way, but that wasted an hour and a half of my time. They went through all our bags and belongings in our car. I've heard other horror stories where they pry and break things in your car and then do not claim responsibility. Luckily they didn't tear our rental apart. The moral of the story, in today's world if you're going to be crossing the border, have your proper papers on you to save yourself and the officers some time.

I hope you all get to make this trip happen. It'll be a lot of fun.

wow...i remember seeing this thread keep popping up, but never posted about it...

first things first...theres gonna have to be a night in Canada...ive been wanting to go since i turned 19 in june, so i could go hit up some bars, so thats gotta happen! lol

i dont know too much about the area up there, but whereever we can get some affordable hotels, awesome

also, i know HIN is in Chicago on the 11th...so i cant wait to tell work im gonna need off 2 weekends in one month! theyll be reaaaal happy about that...i think late june/early july would be a perfect time

OP- once you start gettin plans for this settled, you should put up a couple polls...dates/where to stay ...and the most voted choice should be the plan

Yes, there is a small toll on the bridge going into Canada, however, the road heading up to the bridge is also a toll road. I haven't been up that way in a couple years but the last time I went to the falls, I think the total in tolls was around $5-6. Don't forget about the exchange rate when talking about prices in Canada. They may seem much higher, but if you work out the exchange, the prices are really not that much more than here in the US.

Thanks BlackElantra :)
really helpful info there. I will not be able to cross the boarder up until I get my green card, and hopefully it will be here by the summer.

I will setup a poll to see what weekend would be the best for everyone, so we can start making plans now.

Two more quick tips on crossing, You have to get papers from your insurance company showing you are covered in Canada, you normal insur card is NOT enough, and two, if you are bringing kids ( I know most of you don't have to worry about such things) you need to get them an id card, your local DMV will make them a non-driver card, and bring along their birth cert.

Gman, when did they institue this? I have never heard of this before and never needed to do this on my trips over the border.

You don't need it to get in the country, you need it if you were to get pulled over. I didn't know about it till last year and I was on some Canada Gov site and found it. It was a pretty huge fine to get pulled over and not have it.

I never heard of this either, I believe it's the same as a Canadian going to the states, they accept your licence.

But you can visit our Government website for Non-Canadians.

This is from travelcanada.gc.ca:

Insurance
Make sure you also have proof of insurance while driving in Canada. Prior to your trip, ask your insurance company for a 'Non-resident Inter-Provincial Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card'. This indicates that you are covered with the minimum legal insurance requirements throughout Canada. If your insurance representative needs further information about this yellow card, contact:

I just called my insur agent before I left and she printed me a card.

the only thing worth visitin over there is the whirl pool but i dont think its worth the hassle, i remember they had to search my folks car and that took alone 45 minutes cause it was busy

wildman92

The border crossing can also be decided upon individually instead of a group trek across the border. There is more on the Canadian side than just the whirlpool. Lots to do there. Museums, clubs, casinos, etc.

Canada is good guys. We are peaeful people BUT TRUST ME if you want to go to clubs, get hammered and such, do it somewhere good, because as much as I know, Ontario, (ESPECIALLY TORONTO REGIONS) have the most disgusting nightlife ever, everything closes at like 1 oclock.

On the other hand, Montreal has the best nightlife, where the clubs close at 3 and the afters open at 1 am and close at 2 pm :D) but then again Montreal is faaaaaaaaar away from you guys (but 7 mins away from me :( )

My wife and I are planning a trip to Conn., and were thinking of driving thru Canada. I'm glad I read all the posts and got the insurance info. Also, I.D.'s for my kids is not a problem, they have their passports.

Now back on topic. All I need is a date when this meet will happen, to schedule the trip to Conn. at the same time.

I was in Niagara Falls NY on the weekend, and let me tell you there is nothing there. I was expecting it to be similar to our Canadian side and I was truly disappointed. Everything was closed and driving around I must have hit 10 Million Pot holes, the roads were terrible.
