Oh God My Car!!

New Jersey Turnpike, Mile Marker 49.2, right before exit 6.

Traffic stopped. I don't mean traffic slowed then stopped, I mean EVERYONE stopped short, making the person infront of me dive into the center shoulder. I followed them, and stopped completely. My foot was still locked onto my brake when a ford van dove into the center lane as well, but decided not to stop.

This all happened in less than 3 seconds.

Happened to me too. Cost about $6k to fix. I everyone was stopped for quite a bit... I had no chance of escape. To make it worse, guy who hit me didn't have insurance... luckily I had uninsured motorist coverage and 21st Century took care of everything. I mean everything. So I had a 2004 Elantra rental for a little over a month.

Yup. Apparently they make good boomerangs. That spoiler is a good 35-40 feet away. It snapped off my trunk, used my rear window as a ramp and launched itself 40 feet.

My neck still hurts from the whiplash...I can barely turn my head...But I'm managing. :)

that's happened to me once. actually got a concusion and felt nauseated later that day after the shock wore off. so you managed to not hit the car in front of you? if that's the case, then in theory your insurance should not go up since the damage to your car was not your fault.

Owie......I remember I had to stop quick for something like that, but realized I couldn't stop and that no one would have been able to see it happening behind me as we were at the start of a curve and buddy behind me was on my a$$ (this is in my old car). I pulled over to the shoulder while under braking and passed I think 3 cars....yes 3.....the guy that was behind me pulled onto the shoulder too, only passed one car, and the guy behind him pulled onto the shoulder but didn't pass a stopped car. It was so scary. Hope you have some good news......poor spoiler though.

Every one complains about the breaks not working that well, and that we should all get the Tib upgrade, but your the 3rd or 4th person to be rear ended in the last month and a half because you stopped faster than the car behind you.

Not true. I almost ran a stop sign once, and I just slammed the breaks. Moderatly slowing down, ya the brakes do kinda lack, but when you stomp on it, and you dont have ABS... you WILL stop fast...

I HATE the New Jersey Turnpike. I mean, I know that kind of stuff happens everywhere, but it seems on the NJTurnpike it happens a lot more often than it should. I have friends who live in North Jersey and in NYC and I don't think I have ever gone up to see them and haven't seen an accident. Goddamn New Jersey drivers... (my bf lives in NJ I can say that) LOL j/k :tongue:

i almost never do that whole brake hard thing....i find a way out whether that is a shoulder or something...the person behind you is always following too close....especially in jersey!

Damm that really bites. Went through that once with a mustang, hit me so hard it broke my seat in 4 spots and buried the rearview mirrior in the back window. Take it easy and stick it to the other guy when you can. I doubt the car will make it. Even if it did don't think it ever be right. Sorry :eek:

If I lose my GLS, I am 100% buying a RD tiburon off of ebay. I can't afford anything expensive right now (over $4000), and I still want to have a Hyundai.

The damage to the car has been apraised and it's been submitted to NJM. (which means it's not physically totaled, but if the apraisal is more than the price of the car...)

It's all up to my insurance company now.

i feel horrible about hearing this, i have a big ol' Ford Taurus station wagon, and before i go any further i am not here to flame elantra owners, i believe in equal rights for all cars, anyway i have been in 3 accidents, two in my taurus, one when my dad was driving his smaller car, his car was declared totaled after a van full of mexicans rear ended us while stoped waiting to turn into the school. As for my two accidents, i got hit by drunk drivers, one in a white suvand the other was in an accent. i have pretty much no damage done to my car and can proudly say the next accessory on my list to add to my car is a cow catcher. (old joke most of my friends forgot about) and for those of you that think i'm an evil nazi fuel guzzleing bastard, my car is kept clean and has GREAT fuel efficiency i can go for a week on a tank of gas. driving between sparta and rockaway on almost a daily basis, sparta to newton and back 3 days a week, around town a billion times a day, and the every now and then trip to willowbrook mall. ps unibody construction sucks, it is NOT tom's pick of the week, that is all.
