Here we go again...

This is not something that I just came up with... rather, it is a mod that I had on my 11 second mustang...

Basically, what I did was to install a switch that would interrupt the fan relay... So when I was racing I would switch it off to prevent any power from being sucked out of the system by the fan...

You see, whem I'm at the drag strip.. and the line starts to move.. I have to sit in the staging lanes for at least 5 or more minutes.. in that time, the fan switches on... and it usually stays on even when i'm at the line and during the run ! ...

SO, what this mod will do is very simple... I will locate the fan relay signal wire and snip it... and then extend the wires to a switch in the dash somewhere.

When i'm @ the drag strip... I will wait until i'm the current racer @ the TREE and then switch off the fan manually... whereby eliminating the power drain associated with the fans...

However insignificant the power variation is with the fan on vs off... I consider it a difference...

For instance, on my mustang... when the fan was on, there was a noticable change in idle rpm because the fan would suck out so much power & I had an upgraded 120 amp alternator, however the elantra only has a measely 90 amp alternator and I THINK that every little bit counts....

SO, there you have it folks... another stupid mod :) LOL

I'll take some pics of the switch placement and the wiring diagram for this mod after its done :)

ENJOY !!!!!!!!!!!

Ford make sure that the fan is not ecm controlled because it might throw a cel. I don't know for sure but if it is and the ecm doesn't see a signal coming back from the relay it might throw a cel. I think most car fans are ecm controlled to turn on at a specific temperature 210 218 whatever. I doubt that the fans will even turn on in the 15 to 20 secs of hard acceleration unless you have it idling for a while before the race. I really think it's not worth the time but I know you love to play so tell us what happens when you cut the wire.

So wouldn't upgrading the alternator also be a good mod to go along with this "stupid" mod? Is it even possible to upgrade the alternator (watch out for the newbie questions)?

Upgrading the alternator will provide more power to the system, but be harder on the engine to turn, so its a toss up.

You could have a switch that disables the fans AND the alternator, so you can get rid of some of the drag on the engine that the alternator puts on :D

ohh man...

I dont think that disabling the alternator is a good idea.. it will lower the voltage to the ecm / ignition & fuel system...

however, I have narrowed the fan control system to a fuse in the engine bay..

What I will do is remove the fuse and tap the lines using these angled slip on connectors and insert a 30 amp relay & 20 amp fuse (same as stock fuse) in place of the fuse itself to have direct control over the fans..

I tested it this afternoon and it does not affect the relay operation so it wont throw a cel... & its really easy to get to and adapt :)

OHHH YEAH !!!!!!!

I was thinking that a cutout at WOT for the A/C compressor would be nice, too, along with a tilt sensor that would also kill the A/C compressor (just switch off the power, not disconnect the belt, obviously) during hill climbing (I'm in PA, so there're plenty of those). I just never got around to doing it.

hmm...

That sounds interesting.. but I am not for "automatic" controls...

I want to be in control as much as possible.

Yes, I am a control freak. LOL

Yeah for AC, you just have to hit the button or turn the fan off. A switch there would be a little superfluous.

I can conceal the switch just about anywhere :) HEHE
I was thinking about putting it in the elbow wrest compartment... :)
