Getting threads to show up as read

this is the situation:

i open a forum and i see an unread thread. it is in bold. i open it, and after i read it, i click on the link to take me back up one level (the category level, e.g., "site suggestions"). the thread i just read no longer shows up as bold, which is normal. and if i go up one more level to the main forum page, the "site suggestions" category will also appear as "read", as normal.

BUT, after reading the thread like above, if i click on the link to bring me TWO levels up (to the main forum page), the category will still show up as unread. i have to jump up one level at a time, or else the main page will still show the categories as unread.

does this make sense?

Yeah, it does make sense. I checked with software developers and here is their response:
That is actually normal behavior. In order for a forum's marker to be marked as read you need to load the forum's thread listing page with all threads marked as read.
