i know its possible, but how exactly do i do it.... The reason is I have this Mp3 player that i dug up out of my room, made by Audiovox ( :mad: ) and they decided not make an upgrade for the mp3 player so it can be compatible with windows XP, the mp3 player is like 5 years old so whatever.... i dont plan on changing the songs on the player everyday so i dont think it will be too much of a hassle to reboot my comp in windows 98 once every 2-3 weeks

you must first re-partition the drive.. create 1 primary partition, then create an extended partition, then within the extended partition you can create a 2nd logical partition..

install the OLDER operating system FIRST .. IE, win 98 should be installed first onto the primary partition.

THEN, begin a new install of windows XP, be sure to select the 2nd logical drive as the install partition, and windows xp will automatically add win 98 to the boot menu when you start up... then you can pick which OS to load :)

GOOD LUCK !

or just get a second hard drive for like 30 bucks and install it on there

he still has the issue of dual boot capability..

just adding a 2nd hard drive will not automatically give him the ability to dual boot because then he would probly try to install win98 and then it will overwrite the boot files for XP on the primary drive...

:(

even if you buy a 2nd hard drive, you must re-install the OSes in the order specified in my first reply :)

Brother... NO NEED for all that hassle!

Install the program. Get the main .exe file, right-click on it, choose properties. Click on the 'Compatibility' Tab, and where it's written '-Run this program in compatibility mode for:' check the box and choose Windows 98 from the scroll down menu.

That's all! If it doesnt work, try doing this for all the files contained in the folder and it should work for sure.

Chances are that 'compatibility mode' won't work because the program uses hardware-level calls. I had software that connected my sound card to the MIDI interface on my Yamaha keyboard, and it didn't work under Win XP either.

Also, you technically can install Windows 98 on a second hard drive without having to reinstall XP (even though Micro$oft says you shouldn't). In order to do this, you'll need to get a boot manager program like Boot-Us. Check out http://www.boot-us.com/ for details.

Install it on another partition then edit the boot.ini to give to the option of starting either OS.

I did this before on my bosses computer because he had some old engineering programs that would only work in true DOS, and wouldn't work at the command prompt in XP. So I put a 2GB hard drive in, formatted it (in FAT), and copied the boot files from a floppy to it.

Then I went into the boot.ini file and added another boot option.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

and he could pick his OS on boot every time. you can do the same thing with the Win98.
