dvd rom reads dvd's and read cd's.... Cd-roms's cannot read dvd's
is your asking about speed, you gott look at the specs of the unit

Sorry I meant as in how they are used for video games...not the drives them selves...I know there different formats..but is one not needed to be put on the harddrive or what?

i dont know what exactly your talking about.... are you asking about games that require the Cd to be in the drive while playing?
if you have a dvd-rom you wont need a cd-rom (unless your dvd-rom is really old and doesnt accept cd's)

The difference between CDs and DVDs is that DVDs hold more data.
Regardless if you get the game on multiple CDs or one DVD, you will still need to install it on the hard drive. The optical drive (CD or DVD) is too slow to play the game. You can do minimal installs, but the game's performance will suffer as a result.

The main advantage of getting a game on DVD over CD is that you get one DVD or multiple CDs.... One game I got on DVD had extra features that were not offered on the CD version. Other than that, there's really no difference.
Personally, I'd rather just have 1 or 2 DVDs instead of 5 or 6 cds....
