Well, I got out of work early.. went to the dyno and tuned my cam sprocket !!
I know a bunch of you have been waiting for me to do this and give some definitive results on this gadget...
So here they are...
On todays dyno.. I gained 2 whp & 4 ft.lb /w-torque !!!
and guess how I set the sprocket ? + 4 notches advanced ! thats right.. thats a total if 8 degreez of crank rotation advanced !!!
Sure enough.. 133 whp and 130 wtq !!!
Enjoy !

And here are the old dynos so you call can compare the power gains..
http://www.nitrousworld.com/images/NOV_20_dyno_smaller_detailed.JPG
Here is the old dyno from Nov 11 as a reference.. these were all done on the same dyno machine...
http://www.nitrousworld.com/images/NOV_11_dyno_smaller.JPG
Here is a pic of the sprocket setting up close and one from a little further back:
btw, sprocket rotation is clockwise...
so turning the inner part of the sprocket clockwise will advance the cams... lol

Is that the intake or exhaust sproket?
FordFasteRR
12-10-2004, 06:53 PM
our cars have 3 sprockets...
the one you see in the pic is the main driven sprocket that is turned by the timing belt ..
on the other side of the head, there is a small chain that connects the exhaust cam to the intake cam and spins it ...
so this adjustable sprocket turns both cams at the same time :)

11.5 - 12.0 to 1 at the top end thats quite rich. I know you tried trimming the top end before and didn't get results but maybe going -8 on the top end with your current setup might yield better results. Looking at the graphs it looks like the car is running a point richer than the older dynos. what do you think caused that? maybe somehow adjusting the sprocket made the ecm richen the mixture? I don't know but it seems that you should get some hp if you bring the air/fuel back up to near 13 to 1. just a thought Ford.
EDIT: just noticed that the mixture didn't change much when playing with the sprocket. Maybe the meter is not as sensitive as before. I don't know but a point in air fuel ratio is alot in my opinion.

. . . "let me see your dyno sheet" ? dude why would i waste my time . . its 4 banger . . i know i wont get sh*t out of this car. . . .i just "sighed" cause its sad that we are talking about 2 hp like its the event of the season lol . . not you personally . . i mean all of us . . my point is that it sucks that there is a guy out there who is taking 2 seconds off his time by just turning a wrench twice(overexagerated speculation) cause he has the engine that already turns out like 250 hp stock! and we are here jizzing our pants when we dream about a 200 hp n/a elantra . . its just sad thats all . . . ive just come to the realization about our cars lately thats all . . .its time to move on . . . soon i will, just havent decided where too .. leaning towards ford(the car not the guy on here lol) or bmw

Well there is still no need to put someone down for trying to get the most out of what they have...isn't the whole point of this forum to tweak our cars and talk about what we have done?
Keep it up Ford some of us do care about anything and everything that helps to improve our cars.

Well, thanks for telling me what I already speculated about you. Ever since you first came on this board there was something about you that I didnt like. not personally, ( i dont even know you ) but its just something about some posts you made that showed you don't belong here....
Listen, If you dont think this car is of any use to you, then why do you come on this forum ? Why did you bother to waste space on my thread? Why are you trying to push me down ( and all of the other members on this forum for that matter) ?
Please, do us all a favor and get lost.

So would this adjustment only benefit a Beta II that has been extensively modded like yours or any of our motors would see a gain? If thats the case make an official DIY.

This mod will work with any XD, even a stock one...
There is already a DIY for this mod... I posted it a long time ago.. you can find it by using search and typing " obx cam sprocket " ..

ok, let me give you all a comparison between dyno #'s and 1/4 mile #'s..
ok, my first dyno that I did was:
DYNO.........................................1/4 Mile.......................... Improvement
130.2 hp & 121.7 ft.lb .........16.474 @ 83.21mph*............. N A
132.7 hp & 126.8 ft.lb.........16.119 @ 87.12 mph ........... - 3 tenths
133.2 hp & 130.6 ft.lb......... 15.894 @ 87.45 mph........... -4 tenths
*The first run is not an exact representation because I ran the 1/4 mile with the sprocket retarded 12 degrees.. .this made me loose power, but i set it to stock before I dynoed so i obviously gained power...
The total improvement from the first 1/4 mile race to the last one is almost 6 tenths faster !
The main changes that I made where simple:
#1. reset the ecu before the dyno runs & before the 1/4 mile runs.
#2. Changed to a 3 chamber muffler instead of a straight through.
#3. -4 % on the Split Second ARC1 Fuel tuner.
#4. Adjust the cam sprocket +8 degrees of crank rotation advanced.

FordF and others,
If I only plan on doing intake (already done), and maybe POWERCHIP at some point, and don't want to muck with timing changes, or headers, would I see any benefit from a 3-chamber magnaflow, say with 2 1/4 piping, or am I better to stay w/ a stock exhaust setup.
I'm interested mainly in performance bumps per buck here, I would not mind a slightly louder car, (I love the sound clips I heard of the magnaflow products) but I don't want it so loud it drones annoyingly at cruising speed (65 to 75 mph), and I don't care about looking unique, I'm more after a subtle, close to stock look.
Advice???
BTW - FordF, you have the patience of a Saint.

the magnaflow will work, and so will the dynomax...
and so will a billion other mufflers out there... If you want to keep the sound levels down, the best way to do that is to get a multi-chamber muffler and KEEP BOTH CATS !
if you get a straight through muffler, you will have roughly the same gains as the multi-chamber muffler but you will have a lounder raspier sound....

Guys,
Like I say, I'm not so much asking about sound - I'm asking about a performance bump. So, I'll try asking a different way;
On a xd with only intake mod (CAI/short ram) will the xd get additional performance improvement from going to a 3 chamber muffler, and 2 1/4 inch pipe, but still keeping both cats? (So total mods=CAI, 3 chamber muffler, and larger exhaust piping.)
Thanks,
- Woody

Yes, I have a CAI and a 2.5" Crush Bent exhaust with a 3 chamber Dynomax and there is a definate improvement.

This is off topic, if you want to find out what exhaust is better, start a new thread or go to an existing muffler thread.. there are like 3 of them right now on this forum............................................. ...........................
UPDATE: !

heheh ford, I went ahead and got the sprocket, I couldnt resist.
you know what I think?
I think that when you installed it, you had it 1 tooth off, which is why you lost that torque, and the setting you have now is back to stock
