Debating starting the adventure of putting linux on xbox and installing in car.
Just curious if anyone has tried or can donate information. I have been researching the xbox linux thing. I think i can do that. But I am also just debating sticking a small computer in the car.

I would be able to play everything you can on a computer. Have a navigation system..ie: microsoft streets or something....not sure just starting the research...any help?????

I guess it all depends on what you want to use it for, how much you're willing to spend, and what equipment you already have. If you want to use it for primarily applications and mp3's, then I'd say go with a PC setup. If it's mostly games you want, then go with the xbox.

If I were doing this...... I'd pick up a laptop that someone was selling cheap because of a broken LCD, but make sure it had a tv output (laptop lcd's are too big for the front of a car IMO, the cables are proprietary and would be difficult to extend). Run the TV out to a in-dash flip-up monitor, the sound to the aux input on the head unit, stash the laptop under the passenger seat, (rig an switch to the laptop so you don't have to pull it out from under the seat every time you want to use it) and finish it out with the accessories you need like keyboard, mouse, gps reciever, etc.... you can wire in a car power adapter to keep it running, even hook it up to your cell if you need internet access... or even put wifi on it and wardrive or leech internet access from time to time...

just a thought...

Dammit.... now you're got me thinking about doing this......

XBOX ALL THE WAY. Get the best of both. Mod your box, throw in a bid Hard Drive and you will be set to go.

I have my xxbox in my car right now. It has all of my mp3's and music videos, plus I can play games. Not just xbox games, almost any rom you want.

It will only cost you about $150-$200 depending on the HD you want to put in and the chip you buy.

So from the researc that i have been doing...could be completly wrong and the chances are good for me to be wrong but i didn't think you needed a mod chip to be able to put linux on the xbox... or do you have linux.... I guess my Question to you is how or which route did you take to make all the mp3 movies and games av ailable. Any info would be helpful i was hoping to get a navigation program on the box also. Another note here is i was also wanting to possibly get a tv tuner in there (car not xbox) so i could well the passengers could watch the colts on sunday it always seems like i miss the game. I always catch it on the radio though. If had a tv tuner could catch some of the game and maybe a tree too. anyway thanks i was leaning pretty hard toward the xbox to. not sure about the tv tuner thing...

Check out mp3car.com's forums on some information on building a chopped down computer for your car. This is where I went before I built my old car's system.

There are some modified dashboards that will let you play videos, emulator games and maybe web surfing, but that's about it without putting linux on it. The people who figured out how to put linux on the xbox HATE microsoft, so they're not really into finding a way to install windows on it...

I know you can get USB tv tuners just don't know if the have driver for them in Linux. It's easy to get USB on your xbox also, the Xbox controlers use the same 4 wires for USB.

Yuck. Why don't you put a more friendly OS in there? Sounds like a pipe dream if you ask me. There are drivers and stuff for the touch screens, but they are tricky. Why don't you put yourself a nice Windows based system in? Could probably do it for around 500 touch screen and all. I suggest Lilliput. If you are willing to spend more on a better product, I suggest Xenarc. :) Actually. www.mp3car.com Woohoo!

How did you go about getting your xbox in your car. I have had many comments pushing me away from this option. But not for sure yet.. I will check out mp3car.com and see what they have to say. Thanks for the info everybody.

Actually using it in your car is easy. Run the video wire to your monitor and the sound to the aux on the headunit. I put rca couplers on the end of the wires and put them in my glove box for easy access. Then all you need is an inverter, mine is 300 watts.

For the modding part. If you need help either ask here or at http://www.xbox-scene.com/ forum.

I have a P4 mother board installed in the hatch with a DVD burner/player and 19" screen in back, and have no issues with it, except when the stereo is turned up and is pounding the screen lights up! like a low glow! kinda creapy! but over all no other issues!

yes you will need to mod your xbox to put an operating system on there, but ebay has the chip for 21$ shipped. When i am done with my install you will not want to do anything else either, so just give me a cpl weeks and all your xbox/elantra compatability questions will be answered

;) shawn :)
