Ignition ring light

I saw a DIY on the gt club site http://elantragtclub.tripod.com/elantra/id435.html and i went to the car to see if i could even pry the top part of the steering wheel off the bottom. I had no luck and all i managed to do was make a few small scratches. Has anyone does this DIY and would know what i need to do? also idk what bulbs i need, if you have a website i can order them from that would be great, thanks.

I dont know why it bothers me so much but if im changin my interior lights to blue im still gunna have that green ignition ring and i hate it, theres not much i can do i guess.

Did you remove the bottom half of the cover? It is held in with 3-4 screws, take it off, lower the tilt steering, and it pulls off, kinda awkward pulling it off the key cylinder area, but it comes of pretty easily. It is a # 74 bulb, like it says in the writeup. Don't forget to get one for the cig lighter ring also. And the ashtray needs a #74 regular bulb if you want to change the color of that one.
I still need to pull it apart and see what bulbs are in the trip and TCS buttons before I order my bulbs.

i did it... before you can separate the shrowd you gotta take some screws out from the bottom. shouldn't be all that hard

huh? don't all XD/XD2's have it??? or is it a feature only included with factory keyless/alarm (ETACS-equipped elantras)??

My (ex)01 elantra gls with factory keyless did NOT have a lighted ring.

We discussed this on the old forum once, some have it, some don't. I think we figured out the pattern, I'll have to look for that post.

IF you found it over there, why not ask over there? Because at the gt club it takes forever for people to respond. Over here alot more people visit the site but i did post about it over there and havent got a response. I couldnt manage to take the bottom cover off the top cover. I tried everything but no luck. I did unscrew the 3 screws but i still couldnt pry it off. And theres a few different #74 bulbs at www.autolumination.com. Im goin to pepboys so ill pick up some there.

Edit:the 01-03 must have a different steering wheel cuz theres no place to seperate it in the middle. But i have an 04 so i guess it still works.http://www.elantraxd.com/DIY/steering2.jpg

ill have to check...i think i have a ring, and im getting the blue HVAC from ilan, but i dont think im going to go as far as changing the ring around the ignition key hole

My '04 comes apart. Bottom half pulls off, i don't remember it being too hard. I wll go check later.

Question: when does that ring go on? I remember it doing that a few times, but lately it dosen't (maybe bulb is gone). As in : in what conditions does the ring flash?

when the door is opened the ring comes on and stays on for a fwe seconds after the doors is shut or until the key is in the ignition or you lock the doors with the remote

the plastic shroud that is held on to the steering column by three screws also has to pop in half to come off. it may be tough to pry it in half, but it will pop apart eventually. the illumination ring is not attached to the shroud, it is attached directly to the ignition switch housing.

could it be a GT-only feature?

No my wifes 03 GLS has it but my 02 GLS doesn't. I always thought it was part of the keyless package.

My 02 GLS has it (with Keyless). I'm pretty sure you need to have a model with the ETACS box (so with the Alarm and Keyless controls).

My '03 doesn't have lighted ring either. No keyless entry :headshake.

I just did this mod on Friday (the last of my interior lighting mods) and it was quite simple..
First, pull the three screws under the steering wheel..
Next, gently pry the two plastic pieces that make up the casing apart and remove them from.
Now that the plastic ring around the ignition is fully visible, you need to get under it, and pull one screw out from the bottom of the ignition area... (NOT THE TWO SCREWS ON TOP)
once that screw is removed, the whole plastic ring should come off rather easily, and then you simply switch your bulbs, (get the LED bulb rather than the regular colored bulb, the color shows ALOT better), and screw everything back together, and you're done! :thumbsup:

XD is the chassis code for our Elantras. XD for 2001-2003 and XD2 for 2004-2005 Elantras.

aaah...I'm automotively challenged and there are alot of abbreviations flying around. Took me a while to determine that CEL was check engine light!
