A simple and cheep way to fix the CEL problem with headers that eliminates the cats...
read up !

I plan on doing this mod next week... It'll give me a chance to break in my new stick welder !! YAY !

how is this supposed to help w/ the CEL issues?

some of the people said it is only good for short term use if you read the rest of the post

only 1 out of 5 or 6 people had a cel... that could be related to many other issues...
I think its worth a try.

I'm going to try this today
do you have your own welder ?
where will you be locating the 2nd 02 sensor on your ehxaust system ? ??
pics will be nice before/during/after of this mod !

go to www.o2simulator.com i talked to someone there and they told me for my 2k2xd i would need a 'single band' o2 eliminator. i ordered it 30.00 includded shipping. waiting for my install of new header in a few weeks. simple wire hook-up. looks easy enough for the novice DIYer.

I dont need a welder, i already have the second O2 bung welded in. I will just get those two and install them.
I will take pics when i do this :D

awesome thanks !
Has anyone looked at just putting a resistor in the rear o2 sensor yet?

Well I didnt get to drill the 1/2" hole in the plug tonight, cant find the drill bits. So I will do it first thing in the morning at work. I bought the plugs today at Kragen and they rang up at $1.42, so I said thank you very much and didnt tell them they should have been $5.99 :fiddle:

i dont understand this whole CEL thing because all i did was relocate the O2 sensor behind the 2nd cat and my cel went away
why is this such a big deal? does re locating your O2 sensor not work for everyone?

some people removed both cats. like me and a bunch of others.
I have thought about a header for a long time. The reason I haven't done it is this damn CEL issue. Here in Vegas they do smog checks to license your car every year and if you have a CEL is is automatic, you fail and you can't get the tags on your car till it is fixed.
If I did a header I was going to leave the 2nd cat on. I don't know if that would make any difference in the CEL thing or not, but I have been afraid to venture into this because of so many other peoples problems. I would have to have Midas do the Install, and I dont know if they would be smart enough to relocate the 2nd bung behind the cat,run the wires and all that. Guess I would need someone that left the 2nd cat on, and doesnt have a CEL give me step by step instructions so it could be done right.

Interesting. I have an extra bung I can weld to some tube steel and to the bung on the pipe. Hmm. I'm not sure how it is really sure how it is supposed to work, but if it does then it does.

Well sheet, on the evo forum they say to use a 1/2" drill bit or one close to that size. So I used a 1/2" bit and the hole is just a little too small. So tomarrow I will drill it out just a little bit more. Then continue the mod....
Alright ladies, I re-drilled the hole to 9/16" and if that dosnt work i also brought home with me a round file just to make sure this works. The wife wants to go shopping here in a few so after I get home, I will let you's know how it goes.

On a side note the 9/16" Bit is still too small, so out comes the file, yippy
Ok ok I got it.
After you have the two plugs dont worry about drilling them, because you will need to drill them so much the threads will fall off the plug. So to save time and stress just cut one of the plugs at the end of the threads and then tack weld the two together. The O2 sensor then fits in perfect.
In this picture I only show the threads in the red box as an example, please dont cut these ones.

can you take a shot of the adapter from the end where the 02 sensor will screw in ,and also a shot from the end where the thread shows to see the size of the opening..

Yes I can take pics of where I welded it in.

I'm interested i learning about the stick welder.. I just bought one on ebay and its a 100 amp stick welder...
I plan to use it to do the same mod... I suppose you used the same stick welder to weld the adapter to the exhaust pipe right ?
What type of welding stick did you use ?

What type of welding stick did you use ? Not sure what number it was, it is a small stick, tomarrow I can get the number and tell you.

What should the code be before this mod?

damn, you dont have an obd2 scanner ? ( www.scantool.net )
the code you have before the mod depends on how the sensor is hooked (or not hooked) up to the car.
In my case, the sensor is plugged into the harness, but it is not actually in the exhaust pipe. i have it tie-wrapped to the shock tower on the passenger side. I get a " low sensor signal " error code. If i un-plug the o2 sensor, I get a o2 sensor circuit malfunction code.. however, none of those codes cause a problem with the cars performance. I just have to live with the pesky CEL all the time...

$100.00 for a scanner which I will use once? I don’t think so. See that was the last mod for my car till January 2008. My family and I are going to Iwakuni, Japan for three years.
If I had to guess what it was reading I would say it would be the same as before, since I did have the O2 sensor right in the exhaust.
So unless you want to bring your scanner to mi casa and see what it says, the world may never know.
The car still runs just fine and still will do a 10 second flat 1/8th mile. But when I come home from Japan, look out 400whp. :D

Can't you get your CEL checked free at autozone?
faraco3
12-17-2004, 12:07 AM
I dont know can I?
Autozone will test it free. You know I have yet to figure out why all the other cars including Hondas etc you can put a header on with no trouble, and ours is such a pain in the ***.

It probably has something to do with the vtec

The premis behind this mod is to LIMIT the amount of exhaust the 2nd O2 sees. If you drill all the way through the adapter the O2 will still see the same amount of exhaust thereby throwing a CEL. I have this mod on my 03 Tiburon and do not throw a CEL. Also I purchased my adapter from Autozone and they come in two lengths. If you get the longer 18mm one you do not need to weld two together. All you need to do is measure the O2 sensor tip and get a bit that size to drill about 1/2 inch down the adapter. The sensor will thread in and stay tight plus since the exhaust now goes through a much smaller opening, and that tricks the ECU into thinking all is well, you won't get a CEL.
FordFasteRR
12-17-2004, 10:36 AM
Dicks... since he is using two anti-foulers, only the one where the o2 sensor screws into is drilled.
the primary anti-foulder is not drilled, and therefore is performing the same function as yours.
The problem with his setup may be different. However without the exact code & description we can only speculate why its still throwing a CEL.

12-17-2004, 10:56 AM
Yeah :stupid:

12-17-2004, 11:06 AM
the only reason people have CEL problems with headers is because they dont properly re locate the o2 sensors behind the catalitic converter, or as ford said in an earlier post, they remove BOTH cats.
just wanted to clear that up

apparently DM has this same mod and it works for him.
I think we should ask him to post up some pics of the setup... exact location and such..
how much penetration of the anti-foulder did he put into the exhaust pipe and such...

Or, as I have said in the past, just drive the car for about six months, resetting the CEL when it pops on. I have not seen a CEL in nearly eight months and about 13,000 miles. Time, and a block learn ECU it seems cure all ills.

Ok I think i messed this up. There are two non-foulers that will fit and they are 18mm. Well they carry different part numbers and are a little different in length. I bought the 42002 which works but is like 1/4" shorter then part 42009. Now I think this mod will work with part 42009. I think I will buy the 42009 non-foulers.
Ok I just installed the new longer plug so I will see how it works. i will keep you's updated
Ok well I got a CEL at like 200 miles
Tricked
12-30-2004, 05:28 PM
It works!...for me at least. It's been about 250 miles and no CEL. :D Hopefully this will hold up for good. I also used the 42009 but still welded the two together. The 9/16" drill bit was still a little too small for the diameter of the O2 sensor. I didn't want to worry about the threads not holding since I drilled all the way through the one antifouler.
