Ok, I found a mod on the evo site that had a super light weight battery upgrade...

I figure this could help me with 1/4 mile racing... I may not install it all the time, only when I go to the track... but who knows... I might just leave it in always like the evo guy did...

Here is the battery I picked... it has 680 hot cranking amps, the cold cranking amps are not so important to me since i life in south florida ! LOL However this battery only weighs 15.4 lb !!

I think that is less than half of the weight of the stocker.

The only main difference between this battery and the stock battery is the reserve power time... the oem battery reserve is 92 minuts... but this smaller light weight battery only has 24 minutes...

Anyway... here is a pic:

I also purchased the brass terminals to go with it (12.00) and shipping was only $7.99

the battery itself was only $85.95 so thats a great deal ! Total was like $105. or something.

Here is a direct link to their site: http://www.batterymart.com/battery.mv?p=ODY-PC680

Here are the DIY pics ! I had to fab 4 small brackets to attach the battery... I also used 1 rubber battery tie-down (4.99) from the autoparts store.

Enjoy !

i really dont think it would make that big of a difference where i would sacrifice the cold starts since i live in minnesota.

I think it'll help "some" since you know, "every pound adds up" and thats why elantra's curb weight is about 2600. Weight that is distributed above the "waist" of the car has a more severe effect on a car than weight below it. Also weight in front of the front axle and behind the rear axle has a more severe effect than weight distributed between the axles. So what would be a slight benefit is if you moved the battery to inside the cabin, maybe underneath a seat if you want to get the most out of this lightweight battery. Since you know the stock positioning of the battery is to the extreme upper front left end of the engine bay.

I would like to move it somewhere like under the passenger seat, but I dont know how much power it will be able to produce until I actually test it myself..

I might relocate it some day.. but I think that for 1/4 mile racing, it wont hurt to keep the weight on the front wheels ! LOL

also, just to give you an idea of how tiny this battery is... take a look at the pics of it installed on an EVO 8...

This battery is so small !!
dimentions:

# Length 7 in.
# Width 3 1/16 in.
# Height 6 5/8 in.

I found another light weight battery: http://www.race-sport.net/battery.html
Voltage: 12
AH: 15
PCA: 700 Pulse Cranking Amps
Length: 5.8”
Width: 3.3”
Height: 5.9:
Weight: 11.5 lb or 5.2kg

Cost: 157.00 + w/e their shipping goes for...

good lookin out ford, I have been considering one of those.

I was going to mount mine near the driver side fender where the factory resonator went. (you'd have to make a custom mounting bracket). it'd save a couple of pounds of wire.

Can you elaborate on the benefit of this type of install please ?

i actually saw one of these in person when me and nick (dweet) ran up to quantam racing here in columbus...thing was tiny...it was sweet to see 3 evos, a vr4 3000gt, and a 1g DSM with a turbo bigger than my head (i think that was strictly racing lol)

I replaced my Optima with the 1200 version of this battery. I saved 20 lbs. These batteries are the ****!

I think the benefits of what I was thinking of are pretty simple. you can keep the weight low (same as under the seat). you dont have to really route any additional wiring anywhere.

since its a FWD car, the weight is still in front of the front axle, where you want it for drag racing.

just seemed like an easy solution.

awesome idea.

+ it gives you the room for a longer intake pipe & a cold air box !!!!!!!!!

SWEET !!!

I was just notified that the battery shipped out today and will arrive on thrusday !

That means i'll have time to install it before I head to the track ! OHH YEAH !!!!!!!!!!

Looks good, do you feel the 20lb difference?
Also gotta love all those sexy hyundai welds...

I just got back from a long drive... you can definately feel the difference on the dirvers side.. specially when turning right at high speed... it seems like there is less " pull " outwards on the turn due to the reduction in weight on the front tires...

I like it !

I also ran the a/c in some slow bumper to bumper traffic and the stereo blasted and no problems with voltage drops.

Looks like this is a great battery ! :) I also did some back to back engine restarts... no problems at all.

I am very pleased with this mod. SWEET ! :)

I just stuck mine in the trunk where the weight serves a better purpose.

I think Im going to make another one at some point... out of .125" aluminum

Im worried about this one possibly failing over time.

Its also not attatched laterally, so it might move under hard cornering, the back and forth motion could fatigue the bend and cause the box to fail vertically(BAD).

Im working on a way to make it a sound enough design to where I trust it...right now, Im still skeptical of the design. (as far as longevity is concerned).

I've got more pictures that I'll upload later tonight that show the general process by which I made it.

Looks good, a detailed DIY is always welcome.

I need a shot of the entire engine bay to totally appreciate it, I think.

alright super, I'll work on getting it written up and organized. I actually was thinking about offering a group buy on some boxes. (obviously they would be made better)

but I doubt there would be enough interest to justify it.
